FIR filed against 23 for fraudulently availing old age pension

Hans India24-05-2025

Davanagere: Authorities in Davangere district have launched action against individuals who allegedly provided false information and submitted fake documents to illegally receive old age pensions. Officials have confirmed that 23 individuals from Yelodahalli and Daginakatte villages in Channagiri taluk have been booked for fraud. The cases came to light during a verification drive conducted by revenue officials. These individuals were found to be drawing pensions meant for senior citizens without qualifying for the benefit. FIRs have been filed at the Basavapatna Police Station in March, with officials now investigating the extent of the scam. According to Honnali Sub-Divisional Officer V. Abhishek, the accused misused benefits from two schemes: the central government's Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme and the state-run Sandhya Suraksha Scheme. Together, these 23 ineligible beneficiaries allegedly received around Rs 1.11 lakh through both schemes.
The SDO informed via telephone that the inquiry has recommended recovery of the misappropriated funds from the accused. He also confirmed that the accused exploited loopholes and furnished false data to access monthly pensions meant for the elderly and differently-abled. The fraud was uncovered after Davangere Deputy Commissioner G.M. Gangadhar Swamy ordered a field investigation. During the probe, SDO V. Abhishek visited homes of pension recipients in Yelodahalli and Daginakatte. It was found that in addition to the 23 ineligible recipients of old age pension, six others were unlawfully availing disability pensions.
Following this, officials have suspended the pension disbursal to all ineligible recipients and are proceeding with legal and administrative action to prevent further misuse.

Crime AI an end-to-end investigation tool

"Currently, the NCRP complaint system relies on manual complaint submission through self-registration on the portal or through the 1930 helpline. It lacks intelligent classification, real-time tracking and streamlined investigation capabilities for complex fraud cases," said the startup's founder, Meet Bisht, a BTech in cybersecurity from Parul University and a cyber expert who worked closely with Gujarat Police. "Manual data entry is prone to human error. Often, minute details are missing from complaints as cyberfraud victims are often unaware of what is needed like the crime category or subcategory or transaction IDs," Bisht said. "As this process is time-consuming, by the time a complaint is lodged, the stolen funds have been layered through multiple accounts and recovery either becomes difficult or is only partial. There is also workload duplication for LEAs as the same fraudsters/accounts appear in multiple cases with no linkage," Bisht added. Crime AI was proposed as a solution at the IndiaAI I4C Cyber Guard AI Hackathon — the national competition organized by the India AI Mission in collaboration with the I4C. "Crime AI is a smart, end-to-end cybercrime investigation portal with AI classification, optical character recognition (OCR), voice processing and LEA workflow management features," said Bisht, whose team of young innovators, Rohit Ganaka and Yukta Chauhan, bagged Rs 3 lakh in funding after winning the third prize at the hackathon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Health Plans for 2025 – Start Here Search7 Learn More Undo The AI classification in Crime AI auto-detects complaint category and subcategory using natural language processing. "The OCR-powered document analysis feature extracts text from screenshots, PDFs and images uploaded by complainants and auto-fills in the fields of the form from the evidence files," he said. Through audio transcription, voice complaints are converted into structured text. This feature detects and extracts entities like names, amounts, banks and fraud types, among others," said Bisht, adding that currently, the AI model supports more than 15 Indian languages. "With this model, law enforcement agencies, including those at district, state or national level, can even ask banks or payment gateways to freeze funds or put liens on accounts if there is a complaint of fraud," said Bisht.

Two held for attack on brothers in Noida, bid to run one over with car

Noida: Two men were arrested Wednesday for attacking two brothers in Sector 53 and trying to run one of them over with an SUV. The two brothers, Saurabh Yadav and his younger brother Sumit, were attacked by a group of men on Monday when they were allegedly on their way to Logix Mall in Sector 34 in their Fortuner following a social media squabble. In their complaint, the brothers claimed that the assailants had blocked their Fortuner and pulled Saurabh out of the vehicle, pinned him to the ground, and rained blows and punches on him. Videos circulated on various social media showed a blood-soaked Saurabh desperately trying to dodge bricks hurled at him. Another video showed the assailants attempting to run Saurabh over with a Thar and pushing him into a roadside drain. On Wednesday, police commissioner Laxmi Singh suspended two policemen, including Sector 24 station house officer Shyambabu Shukla and Gijhore chowki in charge sub-inspector Jagmohan Singh for negligence in duty and ordered a departmental inquiry against them. Singh told TOI that Shukla failed to alert his seniors about the altercation and did not make any meaningful efforts to arrest the accused. "It shows arbitrariness, negligence and indiscipline towards one's duties and responsibilities. Sector 24 police station in-charge Inspector Shyambabu Shukla and outpost in-charge Gijhore sub-inspector Jagmohan Singh have been suspended with immediate effect," the officer said. Additional DCP (Noida) Sumit Shukla said five teams were set up to nab the accused. "On Wednesday evening, we arrested Aman Awana, who was driving the Thar, and his brother Akash. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The car has been seized," Shukla said. Cops, meanwhile, are on the lookout for two more men, Gaurav Chouhan and Kunal from Chhaprauli, for the assault on the brothers. Earlier, traffic police issued a challan of Rs 68,500 on the Awana brothers for violating several traffic rules. Initial investigations showed Akash had sent a text message to a female friend of Ayush, who was accompanying the Yadav brothers in the Fortuner on Monday. "It had led to a heated argument between Akash and Ayush over the phone. Ayush challenged Akash to meet and settle the issue. The two sides decided to meet near Sector 53 around 4pm on Monday. Ayush reached the spot with Saurabh and Sumit but was taken by surprise as Akash came with at least 15 to 20 people in multiple vehicles," the additional DCP said. "As soon as we reached, they surrounded us and started hitting us with rods and blades. We tried to run, but they chased us. I was filming the scene when the Thar hit my brother from behind," Sumit said. He added that Saurabh suffered grievious injuries, including a fractured finger and blade cuts on his chest, and was still under treatment. Police said Ayush had managed to flee, leaving the Yadav brothers behind. The other group became violent when Saurabh allegedly slapped one of the suspects. An FIR under BNS sections 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 351 (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult), and 109 (attempt to murder) has been registered.
