
How Canada's wildfires are affecting oil supply
CALGARY, Alberta, June 3 (Reuters) - Wildfires burning in Canada's oil-producing province of Alberta have reduced the country's daily crude production by about 7%. Here is a tally of affected oil production sites so far:
CENOVUS ENERGY - CHRISTINA LAKE SITE:
Oil sands producer Cenovus (CVE.TO), opens new tab evacuated non-essential workers from its Christina Lake site south of Fort McMurray, Alberta on May 29 and began shutting in approximately 238,000 barrels per day of production. The company said it is not aware of any damage to its infrastructure and expects a full restart of the site in the near term.
CANADIAN NATURAL RESOURCES (CNQ.TO), opens new tab - JACKFISH LAKE:
Canada's largest oil and gas producer said on May 31 it had evacuated workers from its Jackfish 1 thermal in situ operations south of Fort McMurray, Alberta and completed the safe, temporary shut-in of approximately 36,500 bpd of bitumen production.
MEG ENERGY - CHRISTINA LAKE REGIONAL PROJECT:
Oil sands company MEG (MEG.TO), opens new tab said on May 31 it had evacuated non-essential personnel from its Christina Lake regional project site south of Fort McMurray. The company said the wildfire damaged a power line connecting the project to Alberta's electricity grid, which was delaying the planned startup of MEG's phase 2B operations. They represent approximately 70,000 bpd of production.

June 5 - PWHL Vancouver signed Sophie Jaques to a three-year contract. The deal announced Wednesday with the defender runs through 2027-28 and is the second signing for the expansion club. The 24-year-old Canadian was a finalist for PWHL Defender of the Year honors in 2025 and won the league's first two Walter Cup championships with the Minnesota Frost in 2024 and 2025. She tied for second among all players with seven points (two goals, five assists) in eight playoff games. The Toronto native won a national championship at Ohio State in 2022 and won a silver medal with Canada this year at the IIHF Women's World Championship. Canada's Ivey PMI shows activity contracting for a second straight month in May
TORONTO, June 5 (Reuters) - Canadian economic activity contracted for a second straight month in May even as a measure of employment increased, Ivey Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) data showed on Thursday. The seasonally adjusted index edged up to 48.9 last month from 47.9 in April. A reading below 50 indicates a decrease in activity. The Ivey PMI measures the month to month variation in economic activity as indicated by a panel of purchasing managers from across Canada. The gauge of employment rose to an adjusted 51.1 from 48.0 in April, while the prices index was at 66.9, down from 70.0. The unadjusted PMI rose to 53.8 from 52.3.

Remains of Canadian hostage returned to Israel, Canadian PM Carney says
TORONTO, June 5 (Reuters) - The remains of Judih Weinstein, a Canadian citizen who was taken hostage by Hamas during its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, have been returned to Israel, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement on Thursday. "As the family grieves the unimaginable loss of both Ms. Weinstein and her husband, Gadi Haggai, who was murdered in that same horrific attack, the return of their remains is a time to begin to heal and to rest," Carney said.
