Kaleshwaram scam: Action advised against 57 engineers, L&T JV
HYDERABAD: The State Vigilance Commission has advised the Irrigation department to take action against 57 engineers, both serving and retired, for irregularities in the construction of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme. It has also recommended action against the contractor, L&T-PES JV, including recovery of the cost of replacing Block-7 of the Medigadda barrage.
The commission's report, submitted in March, was made public on Monday. The state government had ordered a Vigilance probe into the scheme's irregularities in January 2024.
Alongside recommending action against officials and the contractor, the panel issued guidelines for future projects. It faulted the department for engaging newly recruited, inexperienced engineers in the Kaleshwaram works.
Criminal proceedings have been advised against 17 engineers whose actions allegedly led to the sinking of the Medigadda barrage and caused substantial financial loss. The commission cited provisions under Sections 120(B), 336, 409, 418, 423 and 426 of the IPC, along with relevant provisions of the PC Act, 1988, the Dam Safety Act, 2021, and the PDPP Act, 1984.
Additionally, it recommended initiation of major penalty proceedings under Rule 20 read with Rule 24 of the TCS (CC&A) Rules, 1991 against 33 engineers.
Similar action was suggested against seven retired officials. The government was advised to entrust the case to the Commissioner of Inquiries at an appropriate stage.

Corruption charges against 3 cops for accepting bribe
New Delhi: A Delhi court has framed corruption charges against three police officers from the crime branch. The accused officers—sub-inspector Sanjeev Kumar, assistant sub-inspector Kirori Mal, and head constable Sanjay Kumar—were posted in the anti-narcotics task force (ANTF) According to prosecution, two officers allegedly demanded a bribe last year to prevent the arrest of two individuals, while the third officer accepted Rs 2 lakh on their behalf. Dowry death: Cancer-hit sr on wheelchair gets 7 yrs' jail
Mumbai: Refusing to show leniency to a 73-year-old wheelchair-bound woman suffering from cancer, a Mumbai sessions court has convicted and sentenced her to 7 years in jail for the 2014 suicide of her daughter-in-law following cruelty and harassment for dowry. Two sons of the woman, Ashiyakhatun Khan, including the 28-year-old victim's husband, were sentenced to 10 years RI each. The trio was found guilty under IPC section 304-B, which can be invoked when a woman dies within seven years of marriage and had been harassed for dowry. The judge noted that the victim, Gulshan Aara, had died within three years of her marriage to Aziz Khan and the cruelty, humiliation and economic exploitation she had suffered at her husband's house had been duly proved. While Ashiyakhatun Khan's two sons, Aftab Khan, a cloth merchant, and Aziz Khan, who works for a private firm, were also awarded jail terms, her doctor son Ejaz Khan was acquitted for lack of evidence. The case against her husband, Maqsood Khan, was abated due to his death during trial. "The deceased's family had already complied in part with the dowry demand, and, yet, she was driven to end her life due to relentless pressure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo There are no mitigating circumstances warranting a reduction of sentence," Judge S E Bangar said. The trio had been out on bail. Hours before her death, Gulshan Aara had called her mother at 11.30pm on Aug 2, 2014, and cried. She said her in-laws had threatened to throw her out of their home. Her mother promised to pick her up the next morning. Around 2.10am, the victim's family received a call about her death at her matrimonial home in Govandi. After the judgment was pronounced, the judge directed the superintendent of Mumbai Central Prison, Byculla, to take Ashiyakhatun into custody to serve her sentence but also directed that she be admitted to the Prisoners Ward at J J Hospital as she was unwell. Ejaz had first informed police that the victim had hanged herself. Subsequently, an FIR was registered at Shivaji Nagar police station based on a complaint by the victim's brother, Fariduddin Siddiqui. The harassment was reportedly over "insufficient" dowry and a further demand of Rs 4 lakh for a house, despite the victim's family arranging Rs 1.7 lakh by mortgaging jewellery and transferring Rs 50,000. The judge noted Ashiyakhatun was unable to respond and make submissions on the point of sentence. Her lawyer urged the court to let her off with a fine. The maximum sentence in such cases is life imprisonment and maximum seven years.

Bengaluru: Nearly two years after a 68-year-old stonecutter lost his life in a road accident, a Bengaluru court has awarded his family Rs 8 lakh in compensation. The order was passed by judge Shreyansh Doddamani of the 21st additional small causes court and motor accident claims tribunal on May 27. The fatal accident occurred on NH-75 near Bethamangala Cross in Kolar district on June 28, 2023. Rajappa, riding pillion on a motorcycle, was critically injured when a speeding car allegedly rammed the two-wheeler from behind. Thrown off the bike, he succumbed to his injuries at RL Jalappa Hospital later that evening. The resident of Shivaramapura in Kolar was a stonecutter and part-time farmer reportedly earning Rs 30,000 a month. His wife Narayanamma, and sons Amarnath SR and Manjunatha R filed a compensation claim of Rs 35 lakh under the Motor Vehicles Act, stating he was their primary breadwinner. While the car's owner, Arun Kumar PR, confirmed valid insurance with Tata AIG General Insurance Co Ltd, both he and the insurer denied negligence. Tata AIG also questioned the validity of the driver's licence and alleged policy violations, claims the tribunal rejected after examining the police chargesheet and supporting evidence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Police held the car driver responsible for the incident under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt), and 304A (causing death by negligence). The tribunal noted that the respondents failed to counter these findings or provide contrary evidence. Although the family claimed a monthly income of Rs 30,000 for the deceased, the court accepted a notional income of Rs 16,000 due to a lack of documentary proof, using Karnataka Legal Services Authority guidelines. It awarded Rs 6.4 lakh for loss of dependency. Additional compensation included Rs 48,400 in spousal consortium, Rs 18,150 each for loss of estate and funeral expenses, and Rs 40,000 each to the sons in filial consortium—bringing the total to Rs 8 lakh. The court ordered Tata AIG to deposit the compensation within a month, with 70% allocated to the wife and 15% each to the sons, along with 6% annual interest from the date of filing. Citing Supreme Court and Kerala High Court rulings, the judge affirmed that even adult, earning children are legal heirs entitled to compensation, noting, "Loss of a parent cannot be measured by financial dependence alone."
