Shuttlers Dania-Zi Yu capture Slovak Open crown

KUALA LUMPUR: Dania Sofea Zaidi-Low Zi Yu continued to solidify their reputation as a rising women's doubles pair after capturing their maiden senior title at the Slovak Open on Saturday.
Daniai-Zi Yu, who were last year's World Junior Championships silver medallists, defeated national teammates Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan-Nur Aina Maisarah Muhamad Hatta 21-17, 21-19 in just 33 minutes at the Bratislava Multisport Hall.
World No. 638 Dania-Zi Yu had overcome Germany's world No. 721 Eva Stommel-Aurelia Wulandoko, 21-12, 21-4 in the semi-finals.
The newly formed pair of Noraqilah-Nur Aina had reached the final after upsetting Taiwan's world No. 492 Chang Yun Jung-Wang Li Hsuan, 21-19, 21-10.
This was Dania-Zi Yu's second international title of the year, having won the Dutch Junior in March. They also reached the quarter-finals of the German Junior in the same month.
However, Malaysia's hopes of clinching a double at the Slovak Open
were dashed after world No. 642 Loh Zi Heng-Tan Zhi Yang fell to Poland's fourth seeds Adrian Krawczyk Szymon Slepecki, 15-21, 21-12, 19-21 in a thriller in the men's doubles final.

BWF explore two more new scoring styles at world juniors in India

BWF secretary general Thomas Lund PETALING JAYA: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) will introduce two new formats at the BWF World Junior Championships in Guwahati, India this October to make the competition more exciting for both players and fans. In partnership with the Badminton Association of India (BAI), the BWF have confirmed that a new relay system will be used in the mixed team event, while a fresh scoring format will be tested in the individual events. The team event will feature a best-of-three games format, with each game played up to 45 points. Each set will consist of five matches, namely men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. A version of the relay system was first tried at the 2024 World Junior Mixed Team Championships in China, where it received mixed feedback. BWF have since made improvements based on that feedback. In the individual events, a 3x15 scoring system will be use and this is part of the BWF's ongoing testing programme to explore new formats for the future. Both changes were approved at the BWF Annual General Meeting held in Xiamen, China, in April. BWF secretary general Thomas Lund sees the introduction of the new format as part of the federation's push to modernise badminton by making the game more exciting for fans, without compromising the well-being of the players. "It is essential that this process remains inclusive and well-informed, with any future decision guided by evidence, wide consultation, and what is in the best interest of badminton worldwide. "That's why it is necessary to test such innovations in live tournament settings and it is great that we have the endorsement and backing from our member in India and the city of Guwahati who share the same vision as us," said Lund. To ensure all teams gain a better understanding of the new formats, virtual workshops will be held for team managers and coaches ahead of the World Junior Championships. In addition, BWF will also carry out stakeholder surveys and analyse key match data to guide future decisions regarding the implementation of the new formats.

Birthday boy Harith claims Auckland Open title

KUALA LUMPUR: Squash player Harith Danial scored the best birthday present he could hope for after beating compatriot Low Wa Sern in the final of the Auckland Open PSA Challenger in New Zealand today (May 25). Harith, who turned 19 yesterday (May 24), was forced to dig deep before securing a 11-5, 2-11, 16-14, 10-12, 11-6 win over Wa Sern (world No. 598) in 68 minutes. For Harith, who is the world No. 473, it was his second title this month after winning the UWE X Ace PSA Satellite in Bristol a fortnight ago. Harith, who has been based in Bristol since last year, said: "Wa Sern gave me a real tough fight in the final so I am glad to win." "Winning the title here is the best birthday present for me, especially since it is my first challenger title. It means a lot to me. "I am truly grateful to those who have supported me on and off the court. There is a long way to go but I will definitely treasure this moment. Hopefully more to come in the future." Harith, who won bronze in the World Junior Championships in Houston last year, came back from a game down to stun world No. 196 Benjamin Ratcliffe of New Zealand 8-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8 in the semi-finals yesterday. Duncan denied in Aussie final but duo advance in Auckland

KUALA LUMPUR: Duncan Lee's hopes of winning his sixth title went up in smoke after losing to top seed Muhammad Ashab Irfan of Pakistan in the men's final at the South Australian Open today (May 24). Duncan, ranked No. 142 in the world, went down 11-8, 12-10, 11-9 in 43 minutes to Ashab (No. 62) in Adelaide. Reaching the final was nevertheless a positive achievement for the eighth seed. The Sabahan, 22, had earlier beaten Andes Ling of Hong Kong 11-9, 11-9, 11-3 in the semi-finals. Meanwhile at the Auckland Open, world No. 576 Low Wa Sern upset world No. 276 Jooyoung Na of South Korea 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 to reach the final. Jooyoung was a silver medallist at last year's World Junior Championships. Wa Sern, 18, will face compatriot Harith Danial (No. 473) for the title tomorrow. Harith, seeded 12th, came from a game down to upset New Zealand's Benjamin Ratcliffe (No. 196) 8-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8 in 47th minutes to book his spot in the decider. National coach Ajaz Azmat said he was impressed by the Malaysian duo's performances "It is a big boost for Wa Sern to upset Jooyoung in preparation ahead of the World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt (July 21-26)," said the Pakistani coach.
