Pakistan army chief Gen Asim Munir has taken firm control over civilian authority with the first appointment of a serving military general, in this case DG ISI Lt Gen Asim Malik , as Pakistan's national security adviser . Put simply, the Pakistan NSA will follow the DG ISI's military chain of command and report directly to the army chief.This appointment has weakened the office of Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif , who now stands like a pale shadow of the power his predecessor Imran Khan wielded. NSA's office was vacant since 2022 when Moeed Yusuf, a scholar who was picked for the post by Khan, moved out.By placing the serving DG ISI as NSA, the first message Munir has conveyed externally is that the army is now in control and will be the point of contact for all security and related conversions for all foreign governments. Importantly, NSA-level talks and intelligence community conversations will converge under one military office. So, for instance, the US NSA, DNI and CIA chief will have to deal with Malik.The problem is that earlier NSA used to report to the Pakistan PM. Now, Malik, while working under the legal and constitutional cover of Sharif's office, will report to Munir. Both officers are known to have worked closely with each other in the bitter fight with Imran Khan.Munir, who was DG ISI when the Pulwama attack took place, was replaced within eight months of being in office by Khan. He shared a bitter relationship with his successor Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed, seen as a Khan loyalist in the military, and against whom Munir found a willing collaborator in Malik.It was Malik, who as adjutant general, probed the riots which followed Imran Khan's arrest in which many civilians were tried in military courts. He was the one who launched court martial proceedings on graft charges against Hameed and oversaw the entire process.The other message is that Pakistan's entire security decision-making apparatus is now fully in the army's grip. Between Munir and Malik, they will now ensure that the Pakistan PM's role in framing defence, security and, to an extent, economic policies is made redundant.At best, Sharif will now run a front office while Munir will take all critical decisions in his name.The role of NSA in Pakistan has evolved over the years into one which keeps the balance between the civilian office and the military power centre. It was through this office that Pakistan's leadership has also engaged India in backchannel talks - whether it was Tariq Aziz in the past or Nasir Khan Janjua, who was in touch with NSA Ajit Doval, in the initial years after PM Narendra Modi came to power.With the appointment of a serving officer as NSA, this balance has shifted decisively in favour of Rawalpindi. This is in line with the overall shift Munir has tried to effect over the past few months, bringing Kashmir back on centre stage and modeling his approach on Zia-ul-Haq who had said the military's responsibility was not only "safeguarding the countries territorial integrity but also its ideological frontiers", a sentiment the Pakistan army chief echoed in his provocative address to overseas Pakistanis.Munir's rise in the post-Khan era has been quite dramatic. He was to retire on November 27, 2024, while his predecessor had until November 29 in office. As an exception, he was promoted three days before his retirement on November 24, resulting in an unprecedented situation where Pakistan army had two four-star generals at the same time.A product of the Officers Training School, Mangla, Munir is not the elite officer category, a tag associated with those who are from the Long Course in Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul. The OTS was created to address officer shortage in the army and was shut down in 1990. Not many officers from OTS make it to senior ranks, which are dominated by PMA officers.Malik, on the other hand, is from the top military elite. A sword of honour from PMA Long Course with a doctorate in US-Pakistan relations, Malik provides Munir with the ideal cover as he seeks to consolidate his rise within the system and now the polity, by increasing risks on Kashmir and ratcheting Islamic extremism in dangerous times.

Accused In Rs 88 Lakh Dubai Job Scam Arrested In Maharashtra After 2 Years
New Delhi: A 38-year-old man, carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, has been arrested from Maharashtra's Padgha for duping people on the pretext of providing overseas employment, particularly in Dubai, an official said on Friday. The accused, Jakir Daud Khan, had been on the run for more than two years and was declared a proclaimed offender in 2024. He became a job consultant after he was defrauded while seeking a Dubai visa in 2015. Police said Khan operated as a key associate of Fiza Placement Pvt Ltd, an unregistered job consultancy based in Delhi's Janakpuri and was instrumental in luring people who were particularly seeking jobs in Dubai. "The racket was uncovered in September 2022 when complainant Dharmendra Kumar approached the Economics Offences Wing (EOW), alleging that a company duped him of Rs 90,000 with a forged visa, a fake air ticket, and by withholding his passport," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Amit Kaushik said. Further probe revealed more than 80 such complaints from job seekers across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana, leading to the registration of a case on December 15, 2022, he said. The officer said investigation revealed that the accused and his associates through -- Fiza Placement Pvt Ltd and M/s AsIATAS Consulting (OPC) Pvt Ltd -- ran the business without any approval from the Ministry of External Affairs. They allegedly collected between Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,20,000 per person, defrauding victims of over Rs 88.8 lakh, police said. More than 59 fake visas were issued and 364 passports were retained illegally, the DCP said, adding that some of the accused -- Arshad, Ram Anmol Thakur, Gulbhar Ali, and Shruti -- were arrested in December 2022. Later, co-accused Md Saddam and Md Tasleem were also apprehended, but Jakir Daud Khan managed to evade arrest and was declared a proclaimed offender in February 2024. Khan fled to Dubai soon after the case was registered and returned to India in 2025. Intelligence gathered through surveillance of his financial transactions and inputs from informants helped police trace him to a village near Padgha, Maharashtra, from where he was apprehended on June 10. During interrogation, Khan told investigators that he was born and brought up in Aurahi village in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria and is a Class 9 pass out before moving to Mumbai for work in the handloom sector. In 2010, he got married and later became a job consultant. Khan claimed he joined Fiza Placement in 2021 after responding to a Facebook advertisement and started operating as a recruitment agent, collecting payments from job seekers and depositing them into his account.

Ghaziabad ‘love jihad' case: Woman alleges family holding her captive, wants to meet husband
Nearly three weeks after a 29-year-old Muslim man was arrested by the police in Ghaziabad's Indirapuram for allegedly kidnapping her and pressuring her into marrying him, Sonika Chauhan told Scroll that the accused man is her husband and did not do anything of this sort. Their marriage, she said, was registered under the Special Marriage Act on August 29, 2022. Scroll has seen a copy of the marriage certificate and verified its authenticity by speaking to one of the witnesses listed in it. Chauhan, 25, alleged that her family was holding her 'captive' against her wishes and coercing her to divorce her husband, Akbar Khan. 'My mother took away my phone,' she said. 'My family shifts me from one place to another every few days. They threatened me saying they would kill my husband's family. They said that nobody could take me away from them and record my statement in court.' Chauhan's family did not respond to interview requests. However, the police dismissed her allegations. 'There is no such issue,' said Abhishek Srivastava, Indirapuram's assistant commissioner of police. 'Her statement is due to be recorded in court. We will take whatever legal steps we need to take on the basis of her statement.' Chauhan was not satisfied with the role that the police have played so far. 'They are not doing their duty,' she added. 'Why was my husband put behind bars for no reason? Those who should have been in jail were left free to run riot in our shops and destroy them.' Two tumultuous days Chauhan was referring to the rioting that took place in Indirapuram's Nyay Khand neighbourhood on May 26. According to the police's first information report about the incident, a mob of about '50-60 people' attacked the couple's businesses that evening. Chauhan ran a beauty parlour and Khan operated a centre that assisted clients to fill out government forms. The police have yet to make any arrests in the case. The trouble for the couple had begun on May 24, when Chauhan's parents turned up at her beauty parlour. Her father told newspapers and local politicians that he had learned of her marriage only that day. But his daughter dismissed this claim. She also shared an image of her father with her husband that was purportedly clicked at the inauguration of her beauty parlour. 'Everyone in my family knew,' she said. In the parlour, Chauhan alleged that her parents abused and assaulted the couple, forcing them to flee. After running away from there, she posted videos on social media saying that her family was acting on instructions of Hindutva groups. But in a complaint her father filed with the police, he claimed that he had gone there to rescue his daughter, who he said was being held against her wishes by Khan and his family. He accused Khan of hitting him, snatching his wife's jewellery and forcing them to approve of the marriage. On May 25, the police arrested Khan and handed over Chauhan to her family 'as she wished', according to police documents seen by Scroll. Khan ended up spending two weeks in prison before he was released on bail on June 8. 'My family did not even let me meet him when he came out,' she complained. 'I am being tortured' Their relationship began when they were both teenagers, Chauhan told Scroll. They grew up less than a kilometre apart, she said, and started spending all their time together after she completed school. She shared dozens of pictures from over the years that show the couple in gaming arcades, highway dhabas and her hometown in Uttarakhand. In these images, the families can be seen celebrating birthdays, weddings and festivals like Diwali together. Chauhan said she could not understand why her parents had turned against her marriage now. She also expressed fear about her safety. 'I am being tortured so much that I will go mad,' she said. 'Sometimes I feel like ending my life. But if something happens to me, they will not let my husband and his family live in peace. I just want to meet him once.'

India, China agree to expedite resumption of direct flights as ties improve
India and China have agreed to expedite the resumption of direct air services and step up communication, the two countries' Foreign Ministries said on Friday (June 13, 2025), as Beijing and New Delhi continue to mend bilateral ties. The Ministries' statements came after a meeting on Thursday (June 12, 2025) of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, who is visiting India. The two countries reached an agreement in October regarding patrolling along their Himalayan border, thawing a standoff that began in 2020 and had strained bilateral ties, impacting areas from trade to technology to air travel. 'Mr. Sun said in the meeting that the two sides should properly handle disputes and differences, and jointly play a constructive role in maintaining international and regional peace and stability,' according to the Chinese Ministry's statement. Amid strain in ties, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Deputy NSA Pavan Kapoor to reach out to U.S. administration 'The two sides agreed to continue to stabilise and rebuild ties,' the Indian Ministry's statement said. In January, the neighbours agreed to work on resolving trade and economic differences, a move expected to boost their aviation sectors.
