ED facilitates restitution of Rs 611 cr to AgriGold victims
Vijayawada: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Hyderabad Zonal Office, has completed the process of restituting attached properties, valued at approximately Rs 611 crore (at the time of attachment), to the victims of Ponzi schemes orchestrated by the AgriGold group of companies. The current market value of these properties is estimated to exceed Rs 1,000 crore.
In a significant development, the ED filed a restitution application in May 2025 under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, before the Special PMLA Court of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Hyderabad.
The application sought the release of attached movable and immovable properties to the AP CID (where properties were also attached by AP CID), for their restoration to AgriGold Ponzi scheme victims under the Andhra Pradesh Protection of Depositors of Financial Establishments (APPDFE) Act.
On June 10, 2025, the court approved the ED's restitution petition, paving the way for the return of these attached assets to the victims. The properties for which restitution has been allowed include 397 parcels of agricultural land, residential/commercial plots, and apartments. Of these, 380 properties are located in Andhra Pradesh, 13 in Telangana and four in Karnataka.
The ED initiated its investigation into AgriGold Group of companies in 2018, based on multiple FIRs. The AgriGold Group had purportedly collected deposits from approximately 19 lakh customers and 32 lakh account holders.
ED's investigation uncovered that the AgriGold Group operated a fraudulent Collective Investment Scheme disguised as a real estate business, for which over 130 shell companies were floated. These entities collected deposits as 'advances for plots' from unsuspecting depositors, despite not possessing commensurate land.
Through this deceptive model, the accused lured millions of gullible individuals, accumulating vast deposits. These funds were subsequently diverted to various unrelated industries, including Power/Energy, Dairy, Entertainment, Health (Ayurvedic), and Farm Land Ventures, without the knowledge of depositors. The companies ultimately defaulted on their commitments to return deposits, either in cash or kind.
Thousands of commission agents were employed by the AgriGold Group to entice investors, successfully collecting around Rs 6,380 crore from over 32 lakh investor accounts.
During the PMLA investigation, the ED attached movable and immovable properties across various States, totaling approximately Rs 4,141.2 crore. The ED also arrested Avva Venkata Rama Rao, Avva Venkata Seshu Narayana Rao and Avva Hema Sundara Vara Prasad in December 2020. A prosecution complaint was subsequently filed against 14 accused persons and entities in February 2021.
The court took cognizance of the money laundering offensc against all accused on August 29, 2023. A Supplementary Prosecution Complaint was filed on March 28, 2024, against 22 additional accused, with cognizance taken by the court on November 4, 2024.
Earlier, in February 2025, the ED had restituted properties worth Rs 3,339 crore (with a present market value exceeding Rs 6,000 crore) in this case. With the latest restitution, the total value of properties returned to victims now stands at Rs 3,950 crore, with a present market value exceeding Rs 7,000 crore.
This restitution exercise marks a significant achievement in the ED's ongoing efforts to restore properties to their rightful claimants and ensure that proceeds of crime are returned to those who have been defrauded.

Unregistered agencies offer fake overseas jobs for youngsters in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on social media platforms
"The lured youth are told to pay anywhere between Rs 1.50 lakh to Rs 3 lakh, and a fake offer letter and visa are issued to them. They are later told that for some reason, they could not avail the job and money they have paid is non-refundable as they have already signed a legal agreement with them. The jobs which are offered to them are of helpers, waiters carpenters, cooks, housekeepers, masons, drivers, electricians, food packers, security guards, plumbers, crane operators and so forth,'' he added. A joint team from the Protectorate of Emigrants, Chandigarh and Chandigarh Police raided the premises of an unregistered immigration agent in Sector 34-A on June 14. The firm was found to be offering overseas jobs without a valid license and later a case was registered. Also, numerous incriminating documents, including two laptops, 17 mobile phones, fake overseas job offer letters, and other evidence, were seized. "This unregistered firm had been using social media platforms to lure unsuspecting youth with false promises of high-paying overseas jobs in hotels and construction companies in countries such as Georgia, Jordan, Azerbaijan, and Dubai. Further investigations, including financial trails, are currently underway to identify and arrest the owners and others involved,'' he said. Singh also informed that the firm for the last ten months, was operating teller-caller services and young ladies were employed to call the prospective clients. "They were taught what to speak to the client and what to offer. They were given fake names and the mobiles they operated were issued by the firms so that the youth would never ever be able to trace them back," he added. The statements of all the girls were recorded and were let off. "The complaint in the case was that a youth was promised a job is Jordan, and he paid Rs 1.15 lakh, but later he was told that he cannot get the job due to hostilities between India and Pakistan,'' he said. Singh said,`` We urge youth not to fall prey to misleading social media advertisements offered by illegal and unregistered agents offering high-paying overseas job offers. Such agents frequently target destinations including Azerbaijan, Jordan, Luxembourg, Georgia, Cambodia, and Thailand. Aspiring overseas job seekers are strongly advised to verify the credentials of recruiting agents through the official eMigrate portal of the Ministry of External Affairs: and on Twitter handle @PoEChandigarh.''

SC to hear on Monday plea of Amtek Group promoter seeking interim bail
The Supreme Court is slated to hear on Monday a plea of Amtek Group promoter Arvind Dham seeking interim bail in connection with a money laundering case. As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, a bench of Justices Sandeep Mehta and Prasanna B. Varale will take up the matter for hearing on June 16. Earlier, the Delhi High Court had turned down the prayer to release Dham on interim bail pending the disposal of his regular bail application. Dham's counsel argued that he had been languishing in custody for 11 months, and his regular bail application was pending for adjudication before the Delhi HC since February 2025. Opposing the prayer for interim bail till the disposal of the regular bail application, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had contended that the agency did not seek a single adjournment and there was no ground for the grant of interim bail. The ED referred to the apex court's April 7 decision, which had refused to extend Dham's interim bail on medical grounds. In its order passed on May 30, a bench of Justice Ravinder Dudeja recorded that the regular bail application could not be decided partly because of the reason of change of roster and subsequently because of the filing of the interim bail application on medical grounds, which was dealt on number of dates, and thereafter because of the lengthy arguments on the bail application. "Since the matter is already part-heard on merits, I do not deem it appropriate to grant interim bail to the applicant/accused. However, keeping in view the question of liberty of the applicant/accused being involved, the date is preponed to 15.07.2025," he ordered. The ED initiated an investigation based on the Supreme Court's order on February 27, 2024, while hearing a PIL against Amtek Auto group of companies, which directed the federal anti-money laundering agency to investigate the case involving bank fraud by Amtek Auto Group to the tune of Rs 27,000 crore. The top court expressed concerns regarding the diversion of public money, emphasising the necessity of a comprehensive money laundering investigation by the ED, even if the banks concerned had settled the accounts. Multiple FIRs were lodged by the CBI arising from the complaints by IDBI Bank and the Bank of Maharashtra under various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, on allegations of illegally diverting bank loans by causing wrongful loss to the banks. In the course of the investigation, the ED provisionally attached movable and immovable properties valued at Rs 557.49 crore under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The probe revealed that the financial statements of group companies were deceitfully manipulated to obtain additional fraudulent loans and create bogus assets and investments in the books of accounts. The ED had earlier conducted searches at more than 40 locations and subsequently arrested Dham and filed a prosecution complaint on September 6, 2024.
