Thamizhachi takes up Medavakkam woes with Chengalpet collector

Time of India26-05-2025

Chennai: South Chennai MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian wrote to Chengalpattu district collector S Arunraj, urging immediate intervention to resolve a host of civic issues plaguing Medavakkam.
In her letter dated May 21, she said the area, which falls under her constituency, was grappling with poor roads, sanitation issues, visual pollution, and severe traffic violations—conditions she said were steadily worsening residents' quality of life. "The condition of internal roads near Medavakkam Junction, especially those connecting Jalladinpet, St John's School, and Perumbakkam, are in a dilapidated state," she wrote, noting large potholes, uneven surfaces, and eroded edges posed serious threats to motorists and pedestrians.
She flagged the stretch beneath the Medavakkam flyover as a major sanitation blackspot. "It has turned into an open dumping yard with mounds of garbage blocking the road, producing unbearable stench and obstructing movement," she said. The MP also pointed to heaps of illegally dumped construction materials and sand that were choking the road and footpaths, while metro-related dust and pollution were compounding health and visibility hazards.

Adding to residents' woes were traffic violations and lack of enforcement, she said. "Vehicles routinely drive on the wrong side and haphazardly park under the flyover, especially near commercial zones, creating gridlocks," she said. Thangapandian also criticized the unchecked defacement of public spaces with posters and banners, calling it a source of visual pollution.

Nato learns as Ukraine's 'creativity' changes battlefield

AI- Generated Image Ukraine's "creativity", including its massive "Spider's web" drone attack deep inside Russia, holds profound lessons for Western militaries, the top Nato commander overseeing battlefield innovation told AFP. "What the Ukrainians did in Russia was a Trojan horse - and the trojan horse was thousands of years ago," French Admiral Pierre Vandier, Nato's Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, said in an interview. "Today, we see this kind of tactic being reinvented by technical and industrial creativity." Vandier said the operation showed how crucial innovation and adaptation were for victory, as modern warfare changes at lightning speed. "It was a real coup." "We are entering a dynamic era where armies must rely on both major planning but also adaptive planning," the navy commander said. "We will witness continuous innovation where, week by week, month by month or year by year, we will be able to invent things we hadn't anticipated." - 'Must act quickly' - Faced with the Russian threat, Nato this week adopted new objectives for its defence capabilities to ensure it will be able to repel Moscow. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo But Western intelligence agencies have warned that the Kremlin is reconstituting its forces at a pace far outstripping Nato and could be ready to attack the alliance in as little as four years. "Time is truly a crucial parameter. We must act quickly," Vandier said. The admiral, who previously commanded France's flagship Charles De Gaulle aircraft carrier, said Nato needed to amass the forces to dissuade any adversary from trying an attack. "When you say 'I'm defending myself', you have the weapons to defend. When you say you deter, you have the weapons to deter," he said. "That's what should prevent war - making the adversary think: "Tomorrow morning, I won't win." Nato countries under pressure from US President Donald Trump are expected to agree a major increase in their defence spending target at a summit in The Hague this month. That should see a dramatic surge in spending on military hardware. But if cheap Ukrainian drones can inflict billions of dollars in damage on Russian bombers, is it still worth investing in vastly expensive systems? "No-one in the military sphere will tell you that we can do without what we'll call traditional equipment," Vandier said. "However, we are certain we need new equipment to complement it." Officials say that over 70 percent of battlefield casualties in Ukraine are caused by drones. But while drones are indispensable in modern warfare, they are not omnipotent. "Today, you won't cross the Atlantic with a 10-meter-long (33-foot-long) drone. You won't easily locate submarines with such tools," Vandier said. "If they accompany your large platforms, you'll be able to achieve much better results at much lower costs." - Integrating new technologies - The admiral, who works out of Nato's US base in Norfolk, Virginia, said the major challenge was "integrating new technologies and new combat methods, based on what we've witnessed in Ukraine". Nato and Ukraine have established a centre in Poland designed to help the alliance learn lessons from Russia's invasion of its neighbour. Artificial Intelligence and robotics are also increasingly having an impact and are set to help reshape the battlefield. "All modern armies will have piloted and non-piloted capabilities," Vandier said. "It's much more efficient to deliver ammunition with a ground robot than with a squad of soldiers who could face a 155-millimeter (six-inch) shell." This transformation of military capabilities within the alliance, which Nato aims to expand by at least 30 percent over coming years, will come at a significant cost, estimated in hundreds of billions of euros (dollars). Vandier insisted that while the financial effort was "substantial" it was "fully realistic". "Today, we have all the tools. We have the engineering. We have the expertise. We have the technology. So, we need to get started," he said.

Manipur govt suspends internet services in 5 districts for five days

The Manipur government has suspended all internet and mobile data services in five districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur—for five days starting 11:45 pm on 7 June. The order also covers VSAT and VPN services. Citing a deteriorating law and order situation, the official notification stated, 'In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur especially in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching & Bishnupur districts… there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation.' The government order, issued by Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N Ashok Kumar, was taken under Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo — ANI (@ANI) Officials warn of social media's role in escalating violence Officials believe the temporary shutdown is essential to stop the circulation of harmful content. Live Events The order warned of an 'imminent danger of loss of life and/or damage to public/private property, and wide spread disturbances to public tranquillity and communal harmony, as a result of inflammatory material and false rumours, which might be transmitted/circulated to the public through social media/messaging services on mobile services, SMS services and dongle services.' It further stated, 'To thwart the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements and to maintain peace and communal harmony… it has become necessary to take adequate measures… to stop the spread of disinformation and false rumours, through various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.' According to the directive, social media posts and bulk messaging were being used to mobilise mobs and incite vandalism and arson, putting public safety at serious risk. 'The order is being passed ex-parte in view of the emergent situation,' it noted. Arrest sparks protests, roads blocked and tensions rise The blackout came shortly after street protests erupted in Imphal East and West districts on the night of 7 June. Protesters were reacting to the arrest of a key leader from Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei organisation. In areas such as Kwakeithel and Uripok, residents blocked roads with burning tyres and furniture. The demonstrations drew attention across the state. In a video widely shared online, BJP MP Leishemba Sanajaoba confronted security personnel and said, 'If this continues, arrest me and another MLA as well.' The statement was made in response to the police crackdown on local leaders. Militants arrested, weapons seized in crackdown At the same time, security operations intensified across the state. Three individuals linked to banned militant outfits—the Kangleipak Communist Party (People's War Group) and the United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK)—were arrested. During the raids, police recovered arms, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and mortars. These arrests were part of a broader crackdown aimed at tackling rising militant activity in the region. State under President's rule as ethnic violence continues Manipur has remained under tension since May 2023. A prolonged ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has claimed over 260 lives. Thousands have been displaced, and the violence shows no signs of slowing. In February this year, President's Rule was imposed after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned from office. The administration has since functioned under the oversight of the Union Government. This latest shutdown marks another flashpoint in the state's deepening crisis. With internet services down, movement restricted, and tensions high, residents remain caught between violence, fear, and uncertainty.
