
Data is 'sticky,' there's way too much, and we don't control it, warns political scientist
You are a data-generating machine just by being connected to the modern world.
"Almost all facets of human behaviour have now become pieces of data that have become digitized," Wendy H. Wong told IDEAS host Nahlah Ayed.
"Your SIN, your address, your birthday, we kind of think of that as personal and very private data. But that's just a tiny, tiny drop in the bucket of the types of information that are being collected about us."
Wong is a professor of political science at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan, and the author of We, the Data: Human Rights in the Digital Age. It won the 2024 winner of the Balsillie Prize for Public Policy.
She argues data is a human rights issue because there are no guardrails in place to protect us from how much data big tech companies generate and collect about us. And we have little say in the matter, nor how it's used to define us and shape our behaviour.
Wong spoke to Ayed about what it means to be 'datafied,' a term that describes how facets of human behaviour become pieces of data that are digitized, changing how we might live our lives.
What's the relationship between us and the data about us?
The relationship is that it comes directly from us. So rather than thinking about the data, about all of our mundane activities as data exhaust or as detritus, which are two common ways to think about data — it's not a byproduct.
It's actually descriptive of who we are. Its identity and that link has been lost. So in that sense, it flattens out human life. It makes it easier to just say, 'Well,... this is what the data says,' so therefore, you suffer these consequences, whether we think about that in terms of denying people mortgages or, often, it's used in assessing rental candidates for housing.
You can think about it in terms of predictions for who might be a good driver who might be a healthy person in terms of the insurance industry. I mean, there's so many different ways to think about how the data that feedback into how we are affected in all our different systems, social systems, economic systems, to be enabled in certain types of experiences.
I wonder if it's too simplistic to say that we have become our data.
I don't think it's too simplistic. There are a lot of people who actually make that point. It's important not to reduce human life to just data. I think we're both data and we are physical discretionary beings who make choices, who have thoughts that stick and things that happen in our lives that are still — not to date — tracked.
But there's a whole lot going on in our lives that is tracked. We're increasingly being defined by data and our life choices, what's available to us, is increasingly being squeezed by this extensive data analytic system we've created.
And I think that there's probably a distinction between what we should think of ourselves, whether we are or are not our data, or whether our data is our selves and how the big companies see us. They see us as data now.
Yeah, I mean, they see our data and try to make decisions based on what they observe and what they pull from this data. Human beings, we're not discrete in the sense that we interact with the world. So how we think about things can change depending on what interactions we have.
I do think part of what makes datafication challenging is that the more tailored or narrow those opportunities for us to interact are, the more it can reinforce filter bubbles. For example, social media, what you see can reinforce ideas in your head and make people more and more extreme and more embedded with it because they think that this is a widespread idea, or this is something that everyone thinks instead of understanding that there's a whole range of ideas and opinions out there. That's one consequence that a lot of people have observed.
But in general, the way that we live our lives through data and the data generation that all of us are engaged in with these data collecting companies, I don't think it's been looked at so much as a part of human existence going forward. People sort of forget about that, and it's really easy to forget that 20 years ago, datafication was not so extensive.
Right. It's kind of in the water that we swim in.
Yes, that's part of the sort of secret sauce, as it were in what I'm trying to expose, which is that, alternatives exist because the data are about human behaviours and affect human beings, that we have a whole bunch of rights that exist. We have entitlements as human beings, and this international framework around human rights that's been around since at least 1948.
The companies that are doing the data collection, who are they? What companies and entities are we talking about here?
We like talking about Big Tech, the usual suspects. But it goes beyond that. If you think about the importance of data, the economies of data out there in the business world, I would argue that it's really any company that has a digital presence, any company that is engaged online, which is so many, right?
You talk about a solution in which you say that we should become treated as stakeholders in the data that we co-create. And also in addition, how it's actually used. Can you talk about in practice what that would mean? What kind of shift would that require?
We should think about ourselves as stakeholders. If we understand that we do actually play a really important role in the creation of data, that we are half the equation... it sounds really airy-fairy to say just shift your mindset but I do think that actually really matters because if you think that you have a stake, that you're just as important as the Googles and the Metas of the world in the datafication of our lives, then that gives us agency in democracies to make demands of our leaders and to tell our policymakers that these practices are unacceptable.
But are we really half of that equation? Can we equate ourselves with Google and Meta and Twitter?
Yes. I mean, by definition, to collect data about an individual person, that person must exist right in the world where the data are about living people or actual people who have existed.
Now, you're absolutely right to point out that any one of us is no match for these giant trillion-dollar companies. If it's just me or you having this realization that we're stakeholders, but nobody else thinks that way, well, yes, of course. This is why, as a political scientist, it helps to think about these issues because we think about collective action and what it takes to change a situation.
It's not going to happen because one or two people believe in it. It might happen if a collective believes in it. And then what are they rallying around? How are they going to think about themselves as part of the process, as stakeholders? That's where you see all social movements, the demands for change that come from citizens, that come from the grassroots, they all come from people realizing that they are different from what they've been told they are.
So we're not data subjects — data subject has so many meanings, none of which are empowering. You're either a subject of the data or you are subject to the data. And both of those are positions of passivity. If you say, you're a data stakeholder, it means that you have a reason to be part of the conversation.

And it can be very disabling, even to the fittest individual,' said Dr. Farhan Asrar, associate dean at Toronto Metropolitan University's School of Medicine and a global faculty member at International Space University. As researchers examine deep space travel, longer voyages and even the colonization of other planets, the question of how we can keep humans healthy in space has become a vital one. A new commentary by Asrar, published in Nature Monday, delves into the key challenges with space medicine — as well as the myriad of benefits the endeavour has had on Earthbound health care. What space travel does to the human body Space travel can affect us in numerous, often surprising ways. Away from the protection of Earth's ozone layer, the human body will be bombarded by extreme levels of radiation. It's estimated that astronauts on their way to Mars will experience what amounts to a year's worth of radiation on Earth every day of their months-long voyage. This can significantly raise one's risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and more, Asrar said. 'And now, people are focusing on looking at deep space voyages — the radiation tends to be even higher there.' Then there's the lack of gravity. Our bones, muscles and heart are calibrated to strain against this fundamental force; in its absence, these systems can quickly start breaking from disuse, explained Mathieu Caron, director of astronauts, life sciences and space medicine at the Canadian Space Agency. 'Fortunately for the astronauts, when they come back down on Earth, they can actually recover a lot of what they've lost.' Time spent in microgravity, combined with the radiation exposure, can ravage our bodies and lead to losses in bone density, vision changes due to fluid shifts in the eyes or even organ damage, Asrar's paper reads. In some cases, the damage was lasting, he said — some astronauts had to start wearing glasses or reported bone fractures after returning to Earth. On top of all the physical hurdles, astronauts must also contend with the psychological toll of what may be months spent in a cramped, dangerous and stressful environment, away from loved ones, he continued. 'On Earth, if someone has a health issue, you can immediately call an ambulance or go to the ER,' Asrar said. 'But in space, obviously, it just makes the health care delivery so much more challenging.' How do astronauts stay healthy in space? Astronauts undergo a great deal of preparation both before, during and after their space trips to ensure their health — including health checks and training before flight, regular physical conditioning while in space and weeks of physical therapy and rehabilitation after re-entry to Earth. But for trips into deep space, these may not be enough. Asrar's paper defined four 'key strands' of space medicine critical for mission success, as well as human health on Earth: Remote health care, mental health, food production and basic human biology. But long space voyages can disrupt this process; it can take 20 minutes each way for astronauts on Mars to communicate with doctors on Earth — much too long when dealing with emergencies like a heart attack, for example. The development of artificial intelligence health systems may provide a solution. But there are still more issues to contend with; many ingredients in medications degrade faster as a result of the intense radiation, for example, and resupplying crucial medicines in deep space is 'infeasible,' Asrar's paper reads. While further research is needed on this front, advancements are being made, from lighting systems meant to maintain more conventional circadian rhythms to virtual-reality headsets. It could take seven to ten months to travel to space — meaning spacefarers would need to produce their own food. On this front, a number of new systems that require few resources to grow fruits and veggies in harsh environments are being developed. Finally, Asrar and Caron note there is still much unknown about how extended space trips will affect our biology. 'The International Space Station is really close, relatively speaking, to the Earth,' Caron said. 'But if we venture towards the moon, that's about a thousand times further away. Mars is a million times farther away. We really, absolutely need to know what happens to the human body before we reach those destinations.' Canadian-made test could help diagnose sepsis, researchers say
A team of Canadian researchers has created a test they say could quickly predict if a patient is going to develop sepsis, a life-threatening condition that happens when the immune system has a dysfunctional reaction to an infection and starts attacking the body's own organs and tissues. Sepsis kills thousands of people in Canada and close to 50 million people worldwide every year, said Dr. Claudia dos Santos, senior author of a research paper about the test published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications. Treating sepsis quickly is crucial to survival, said dos Santos, who is a clinician-scientist and critical care physician at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. 'A one-hour delay in the treatment of sepsis can increase mortality by close to eight per cent,' she said, noting that acting within the first six hours is very important. Story continues below advertisement The problem is that there is currently no single test that can tell doctors which patients with infections — which can be anything from COVID-19 to a bacterial infection from a cut — will go on to develop sepsis, she said. That's because symptoms of sepsis are 'non-specific' and could also be symptoms of illness from the infection itself, including a fever, a high respiratory or heart rate, low blood pressure, low urine output, an abnormal white blood cell count and confusion. 2:11 Raising awareness of the world's #1 killer So physicians use their best clinical judgment, but it's based on a 'suspicion' of sepsis rather than a clear biological marker, dos Santos said. And the motivation behind this paper is there has to be a better way.' Story continues below advertisement Dos Santos and colleagues from the University of British Columbia and National Research Council Canada believe they've found it — a blood test that could predict a patient's likelihood of developing sepsis. Robert Hancock, director of UBC's centre for microbial diseases and immunity research, led a team that used artificial intelligence to find genes that stood out in patients who went on to develop sepsis — and found six that they called 'Sepset.' 'The idea is that in sepsis, each of these six genes is more highly expressed than it is when the patients aren't in sepsis,' said Hancock. 'Really critically, we see this phenomenon occurring before there is an obvious diagnosis of sepsis.' The researchers examined blood samples from 586 past patients and found higher levels of those six genes when patients' immune systems were starting to react abnormally. They found that when there was an increased presence of those genes, the patients went into sepsis within 24 hours. Testing patients to see if they have that six-gene 'signature' could allow physicians to take immediate action to treat sepsis early, including starting antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected, increasing fluids to help keep blood pressure stable and preparing to move the patient to intensive care if they need respiratory support or other critical care measures, dos Santos said. Story continues below advertisement Those actions can all happen while doctors pinpoint the initial infection and treat it with antibiotics, steroids, or other medications. 1:41 IWK health centre introducing new screening tool for sepsis in children The researchers also wanted to make the sepsis test portable, so it could be brought to a patient's bedside in the emergency department or used in remote communities to decide whether a patient needs to be transported to an urban hospital. National Research Council Canada developed a small device that takes less than 50 microlitres of blood — one or two drops — and extracts RNA to detect how much of the six signature genes are present. The device — called Powerblade — produced the results in less than three hours. When tested using 30 of the blood samples from previous patients, it was 92 per cent accurate in predicting who had developed sepsis, the researchers say. Story continues below advertisement An important limitation of the study is that the test has not yet been used with patients in real time, the paper says. Dos Santos said that's the next step, in the form of a clinical trial funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. She's hoping they'll be able to start it this year. 'We're actually going to test the device, the prototype, in the real-world environment and demonstrate that we can do the whole thing for real,' she said. 'And then we need to find out, once we have those results, how does that change (patient) outcomes?'
