Jack Grealish can have City future after Club World Cup omission
Pep Guardiola has suggested Jack Grealish does have a future at Manchester City despite leaving him out of his squad for the Club World Cup. The City manager appeared to have opened the door for Grealish to leave the Etihad Stadium when he omitted him from the 27-man playing group for this summer's tournament in the United States. That came after Grealish, a £100million signing from Aston Villa four years ago and one of the stars of the 2023 treble success, endured a difficult 2024-25 season, making just seven Premier League starts. Yet Guardiola, while offering no guarantees about the England international's prospects at City, says his absence is principally about allowing him to work on his game. Speaking at a press conference in Philadelphia ahead of City's tournament opener against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca, Guardiola said: 'He had a conversation with the club and decided the best. 'Jack is an exceptional player but he didn't (play a lot). We decided he has to play. 'We're honest and he's honest. We decided the best was to stay (behind) and find that he can play, that he can come back to the player of the year of the treble and all his career at Aston Villa. 'But the fact is he didn't play much minutes the last two seasons. He has to come back to play and have the butterflies in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality that he has. 'We decided don't come here. What happens I don't know but if he doesn't (leave) he is a player for Man City and he will be back.' Guardiola denied this meant he felt Grealish had lost hunger for the game, but he needs reasons to start picking him again. He said: 'The reason he didn't play is my decisions. Football is competing with each other – not just Jack, all of them. 'They compete (for) who deserves to play. The butterflies are an example of the tension and they happen for all the players. 'Over the last two years he didn't play much and I take responsibility for that, but he has to play and we reflected that it was better not to come here.' Another player not involved in the US is England right-back Kyle Walker, who spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan and appears set to leave the club. The 35-year-old has been linked with Everton but Guardiola was unwilling to discuss the matter. He said: 'I don't have any news. It's the same case for Jack. About the links with other teams, you have to ask (director of football) Hugo (Viana).'

'The abuse never stops' - Lionesses to avoid social media
England forward Alessia Russo says she prefers to stay off social media during major tournaments because of how "damaging" abuse can 26-year-old was speaking about the issue alongside her Lionesses teammates as they prepare for their European Championship defence in Switzerland next comments come after British women's tennis number one Katie Boulter spoke to BBC Sport about abuse and death threats she has received online,Manchester United midfielder Grace Clinton 22, says she will try and stay away from social media to avoid a "toxic environment" while Chelsea forward Lauren James said "the abuse never really stops"."I think every player might have a different story about that side of the game but it's definitely one that can be really damaging," said Arsenal forward Russo, 26."I have faced it in the past and I think most players here have. When I was younger I probably got sucked into it more. "I read it more than I should have and listened to it more than I should have. The only opinions that matter are my team-mates, my coaches and my family."In my first Euros I was on social media and I would have a look, have a scroll, and I got caught in a trap sometimes. "Going into the World Cup, I completely came off everything and I had people to run my Instagram. I just focused on the tournament. "It's personal preference and whatever works for the team. Staying away from it and staying focused as a team is what works for me."Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, James discussed abuse she received, saying: "Sometimes it's not even to do with my performance, even when someone loses at Fifa [EA Sports FC video game], my card scores against them and they're sending me abuse."I guess when it's your first time though, maybe it might touch someone but I'm used to it, I'm going to just brush it off my shoulder."Chelsea midfielder Kiera Walsh told 5 Live she no longer uses social media, while club teammate Lucy Bronze added: "People write horrible things and obviously our families read it as well and it can be upsetting if you see something that's not very nice."Social media is amazing in one way and absolutely awful in another way. I think most of us have been off at some point."Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone said that while she will still uses Instagram during the tournament, she will respect the decision of any team-mate who decides to keep off social media while in Switzerland."I know other people turn their phones off. We have that conversation and all know how each other wants to go through the tournament," she said."If I see something on Instagram I'm not going to tell someone or blurt it out to the team because they don't want to see it. I think it's a personal preference."Having experienced online abuse as a young player, both her and Russo want to help younger players in the squad deal with it."I think from experiences me and Alessia have had in the past, we've always been the people that want to make sure the younger or less experienced players coming into the squad feel relaxed and feel OK," Toone added."We have such a talented squad. We have bags of talent coming into their first tournament so we want to make sure they are at ease and feel confident within themselves." Head here to get involved

Arsenal 'yet to make a formal bid for Benjamin Sesko due to one stumbling block surrounding Leipzig striker - with Gunners looking at another alternative if things don't change'
The Benjamin Sesko sweepstakes during this summer transfer window have taken another twist, according to reports in Germany. The RB Leipzig striker has been a long-time Arsenal target, with the club having had offers rejected in May last year and the most recent January transfer window. The Gunners are keen to bolster their attacking options having finished second in the Premier League for a third-straight season. Sesko is their priority signing but however, according to German reporter Florian Plettenberg no bid has yet been submitted - and that is down to one key reason. Leipzig value Sesko between £68million and £85m - figures the north London outfit are reportedly unwilling to reach. He adds that Arsenal and Sesko's camp remain in contact, but personal terms between the two parties are not yet fully agreed. Furthermore, Plettenberg claims that the Mikel Arteta's side are succession planning and are still monitoring the situation with Sporting's wantaway striker Viktor Gyokeres. If Gyokeres can leave for his verbally agreed fee with the Portuguese club, believed to be between £51-59m, then the north London outfit will remain interested However, as reported by Mail Sport earlier this month, Sesko - who scored 21 goals and registered six assists in all competitions last season, including four in the Champions League - wants the move. Leipzig only finished seventh in the Bundesliga in 2024-25 and will not be able to offer their star striker Champions League football next season, while the Gunners will be playing in Europe's elite club competition. The in-demand 22-year-old Slovenian has already rejected a move to Saudi side Al-Hilal, such is his preference to join Arsenal.
