Hong Kong's equity capital markets bounce back in first half, as Shein IPO looms

CNA4 hours ago

Hong Kong's equity capital markets activity roared back to life in the first half of 2025, driven by global investors sharpening focus on China as the city awaits the possible Shein initial public offering in the second half.
Big ticket capital raisings and a rush of "A to H" share deals, where companies already listed on mainland Chinese markets list in Hong Kong, helped revive flatlining markets and led to the strongest first half since 2021.
Fast fashion giant Shein is working to list in Hong Kong before the end of the year, Reuters reported in May, citing sources with direct knowledge of the matter.
A Shein listing would help Hong Kong re-establish its credibility as a global fundraising centre as a time of major volatility created by US trade policy changes.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index is up 21.2 per cent year-to-date, making it one of the best performing major markets in the world, despite the tariff negotiations between China and the United States.
"The new era has come which is a more divided world - I think that's reality we are facing," said James Wang, head of Asia ex-Japan equity capital markets at Goldman Sachs.
"Arguably, there are more investment opportunities. It's a structural change and there is going to be capital outflowing from the US and inflows into the Asian region."
Across Asia, including Japan, there was a 15.3 per cent increase in total equity issuance in the first half to US$116.2 billion, up from US$100.7 billion in the same period last year, according to LSEG data.
There were US$12.8 billion of combined proceeds from IPOs and second listings in Hong Kong in the first half, up more than eight-fold on the same time last year, the data showed.
But the US$2.9 billion raised from IPOs in Hong Kong during the half, while up from last year's US$1.7 billion, remained well below the US$8.5 billion raised on the Nasdaq in New York, according to LSEG data.
Despite the Hang Seng's rally, investors remain nervous buying into IPOs as volatility continues to rack global markets.
"An A to H listing is like a follow on, there is a price benchmark, but for standalone IPOs where you don't have that price benchmark," Wang said.
"The last round's valuation is not a benchmark. For people to feel comfortable to write a large ticket they need to get comfortable the market is there to support them, not just that they feel the valuation is OK."
Global investors buying back into China and participating in major deals like battery maker CATL's US$5.3 billion listing and electric vehicle makers Xiaomi and BYD raising a combined US$11 billion helped drive equity transactions, dealmakers said.
"Many global investors have reduced underweight positions and are taking advantage of capital market liquidity events to increase exposure," said Sunil Dhupelia, JPMorgan's co-head of equity capital markets for Asia-Pacific.
"Engagement from global investors on our Hong Kong and mainland China pipeline is the highest it has been for some time," he said.
China in May cut benchmark lending rates for the first time since October as authorities worked to ease monetary policy to shield the economy from any Sino-US trade war impact.
China's Premier Li Qiang said on Thursday the world's second-largest economy remains the biggest driving force for the global economy and that policymakers would take "forceful steps" to boost domestic consumption.
"I think investors are also taking some comfort that China still has chips in their bag that they can play to support the market, such as supportive policy measures," said Aaron Oh, UBS's head of equity capital markets for Asia Pacific.
"And China has shown resiliency thus far despite the global trade uncertainties."
Goldman Sachs topped Asia's equity capital market league tables in the first half, ahead of Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan, the LSEG data showed.

China's Xiaomi receives almost 300,000 SUV pre-orders in minutes

BEIJING: Chinese electric vehicle maker Xiaomi received almost 300,000 pre-orders within an hour for its first sports utility vehicles in what the company said was a "miraculous" moment for the industry. Lei Jun, founder and CEO of the electronics-turned-car company, said he was astonished by the reaction from customers. "My goodness, in just two minutes, we received 196,000 paid pre-orders and 128,000 lock-in orders," Lei said in a video distributed after the vehicle's launch on Thursday night (Jun 26). "We may be witnessing a miracle in China's automotive industry." The company's electric vehicle division said later on its official Weibo account that there had been 289,000 pre-orders for the five-seater YU7, priced from 253,500 yuan (about US$35,000), within the first hour of sales. The YU7 is only Xiaomi's second vehicle, and one that undercuts Tesla's Model Y in price by nearly 4 per cent. Tesla's Model Y, China's best-selling SUV, will likely lose more market share, analysts said. That would only rub salt into the wound for the US automaker, which has steadily lost ground to domestic EV makers that have won over consumers with snazzy new models. Xiaomi's SU7, for example, has outsold Tesla's Model 3 in China on a monthly basis since December. The YU7's price is "slightly below that of Tesla's Model Y but it offers much better specs and performance", said analysts at Jefferies. Citi analysts said Tesla may have to cut prices further, offer its "Full Self-Driving" driver assistance software for free and offer more financing incentives if it is to successfully compete with Xiaomi. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Its share of the Chinese EV market has fallen from a peak of 15 per cent in 2020 to 10 per cent last year and then again to 7.6 per cent for the first months of 2025. Xiaomi shares soared 8 per cent to a record high in Hong Kong after the surge of early orders. The Beijing-based commercial tech giant made its first foray into car-making with its SU7 EV model last year, part of a broader industry push to boost domestic consumption. Initial enthusiasm for intelligent driving features in such vehicles was tempered by the fatal crash of a Xiaomi SU7 in March. The vehicle had been in assisted driving mode just before it crashed, killing three students. Premier Li Qiang used the World Economic Forum in Tianjin this week to outline China's ambition to become a "major consumption powerhouse", emphasising policies to stimulate demand for high-value goods such as electric vehicles.

Singapore launches GaN hub to power next-gen semiconductors

SINGAPORE: Singapore launched a new S$123 million semiconductor facility to boost its role in chip technologies and get a share of the growing gallium nitride (GaN) market. The new centre, located in One North, is called the National Semiconductor Translation and Innovation Centre for Gallium Nitride (NSTIC GaN). With plans to start commercial operations in mid-2026, NSTIC GaN will offer wafer fabrication and prototyping services to local companies and researchers. Dr Tan See Leng, Minister in charge of Energy and Science & Technology, said, 'In a world marked by strategic fragmentation, investing in GaN technologies improves our ability to compete globally and develop unique skills. This centre is a step forward in securing high-value semiconductor growth for Singapore.' GaN semiconductors' benefits GaN semiconductors offer superior voltage and frequency performance with less heat output than silicon. This means they are crucial for compact electronic systems in 5G and 6G infrastructure. They also have applications for autonomous vehicles, satellite communications, and military radar due to improved energy efficiency and advanced technology. It is the first local facility to offer both 6-inch GaN-on-Silicon Carbide and 8-inch GaN-on-Silicon wafer lines. This permits the production of both high-performance defence-grade electronics as well as commercial power devices. Wafer diameter affects chip output per batch, directly impacting cost and efficiency. Dr Tan stressed: 'Access to local fabrication lowers capital barriers and speeds up time to market. SMEs and start-ups can now prototype and develop chips locally, without facing prohibitive upfront costs.' A*STAR, DSO National Laboratories, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) are spearheading the NSTIC GaN project as part of an initiative to strengthen Singapore's semiconductor ecosystem. Other nodes include an advanced photonics R&D centre and a $500 million advanced packaging facility in Tampines. The launch also saw several agreements signed to support industry partnerships. A notable collaboration involves NSTIC GaN, DSO, and the local startup WaferLead, which will work together to develop high-quality silicon carbide substrates. This is a critical component in GaN wafer manufacturing. Waferlead, which produces wafers for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and data centres, expects that using NSTIC's shared infrastructure could yield capital expense savings ranging from $6 million to $10 million. Its CEO, Dr Sunil Wickramanayaka, shared: 'These savings can be invested in market expansion and product development. Singapore is a key node in the global semiconductor industry. EDB estimates Singapore makes about 10% of global chips and 20% of semiconductor manufacturing equipment worldwide. Semiconductors account for nearly 6% of the city-state's GDP and provides jobs for over 35,000 people. The industry benefits from Singapore's strategic location, reliable regulations, and skilled workers. Exploring GaN and other novel materials is part of the industry's efforts to remain competitive.
