Mixed martial arts to make Asian Games debut

Mixed martial arts (MMA) will make its Asian Games debut next year when Japan hosts the continent's premier sporting event, organisers said on Tuesday.
Cricket was also formally approved for inclusion at the Games during a meeting in host city Nagoya on Monday – despite doubts about where exactly the sport will take place.
"MMA will feature six events in its Asian Games debut and be classed as a discipline under combat sports," the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) said.
The OCA and local organisers will hold meetings this week as they ramp up preparations for the 2026 Games, which will be in Nagoya and the wider Aichi prefecture.
As many as 15,000 athletes could compete at the September 19 to October 4 Games next year – more participants than the Olympics.
The OCA said that cricket will be played somewhere in Aichi but it is unclear where because there is currently no venue in the prefecture for the sport.
T20 cricket was played at the Covid-delayed Asian Games in China in 2023 and will return to the Olympic programme in Los Angeles in 2028.
In December, Aichi governor Hideaki Omura said the build-up to the Asian Games was going smoothly.
His remarks came after Japanese media said the OCA was not happy with preparations and had accused local organisers of not sticking to the host city contract.
Reports said the OCA had demanded improvements in several areas, including accommodation and transport for athletes and teams. (AFP)

The 18-year-old eclipsed Hungarian Katinka Hosszu's mark of 2 minutes 6.12 seconds set at the 2015 World Championships to become the first woman to duck under 2 minutes six seconds. It was triple Olympic gold medallist McIntosh's second world record of the meet following her 400m freestyle world record on Saturday. The gifted Canadian teenager had also impressed during Sunday's victory in the 800m freestyle, clocking the third-fastest time in history in an event not typically regarded as her strongest. Yet McIntosh showed no signs of fatigue with another dazzling performance to delight the crowd in British Columbia on Monday. "Overall really happy with that time and always just trying to keep pushing forward," McIntosh said after her record-breaking display. Photo: RTHK Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law on Monday said all television stations in Hong Kong will broadcast the upcoming National Games. At a Legco panel meeting, sports sector lawmaker Kenneth Fok asked if local broadcasters would be able to televise the events. Law said the programmes will be produced by China Central Television (CCTV), but all television stations in the SAR could broadcast the events live. "For Guangdong and Macau, CCTV will be producing the shows. Hong Kong is not an exception," she said. "According to the plan, all television stations in Hong Kong will broadcast the events. I know that they have their work plans, and they are working to show more events to the public." Law added that Hong Kong-themed merchandise for the National Games is expected to be launched later this month and will be available at stores from July. Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong will be co-hosting the Games, and Hong Kong will stage eight competition events.
