Soccer-Pochettino glad to get a reaction after US end losing streak in style

(Reuters) -United States manager Mauricio Pochettino said Sunday's 5-0 thrashing of Trinidad and Tobago in their Gold Cup opener would do his squad the world of good after they came in for some stinging criticism during a four-match losing run.
The U.S., who will co-host next year's World Cup with Canada and Mexico, had come under pressure after a humiliating 4-0 defeat by Switzerland in a friendly last week but found form in California to go top of Group D.
The U.S. were without some of their top players, including Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah, who have decided to skip the tournament, with the high-profile absences prompting criticism from former U.S. stalwarts Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas.
Pochettino said it was important to start the Gold Cup with a "good feeling".
"Today's game was also a difficult one, especially because of the negative things that happened in recent weeks," he was quoted as saying by ESPN.
"Some results that haven't gone well always generate a bit of noise. It's important for the players to have that confidence."
With the World Cup on the horizon, former Tottenham Hotspur boss Pochettino said the Gold Cup would be a chance for players to stake their claim for a place in the squad next year.
"We want to win, but at the same time it's to help the players to perform and to knock (on) the door and say, we can perform for the national team and we can be involved in the next World Cup," he added.
"That is what I expect. Win, and the player really believes that they are having the opportunity...(to) fight for a place in the World Cup."
The U.S. top Group D ahead of Saudi Arabia, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. They next face the Saudis, who beat Haiti 1-0 in their opener, in Texas on Thursday.
The Gold Cup runs until July 6.

A subsequent stewards document rejecting the protest revealed that Red Bull had claimed unsportsmanlike behaviour by Russell when the safety car was deployed. Red Bull argued that Russell braked unnecessarily and erratically behind the safety car along the back straight and complained over the team radio that Verstappen had gone past when not allowed to. Red Bull said the radio message "displayed unsportsmanlike intent" and Russell's braking had taken Verstappen by surprise, leaving him no alternative but to overtake momentarily. They also suggested that onboard cameras showed Russell looking in his mirrors before braking "to force (Verstappen) to overtake to force an infringement." Russell denied it, said he was not trying to force an investigation and Mercedes pointed out they had not lodged any complaint. The stewards accepted there had been no unsportsmanlike conduct. From the 2026-27 season onwards, the 13th-placed side in the top division will meet the runners-up of WSL2 in a promotion/relegation playoff, and the WSL's bottom club will be relegated and replaced by the winners of the second division. "Expanding the WSL to 14 teams will stimulate movement between leagues and through the pyramid which increases opportunities," WSL CEO Nikki Doucet said. Malaysia blow 3-0 lead in crushing New Zealand defeat in Nations Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: The national hockey team threw away a three-goal lead to suffer a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat to New Zealand in a Nations Cup Group B match at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Monday. It was the Speedy Tigers' 15th loss to the Black Sticks since the 1975 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia, who drew 3-3 with Pakistan in their opener on Sunday, looked to be cruising after goals from Akhimullah Anuar Esook (18th minute), Fitri Saari (38th) and Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal (39th) gave them a 3-0 advantage. But the defence, led by captain Marhan Jalil, crumbled after the 44th minute. Poor decision-making and two yellow cards proved costly as the hosts conceded four goals in just eight minutes. Fitri was shown a yellow card and sent to the sin bin in the 44th minute, and the Black Sticks quickly capitalised with strikes from Finn Ward (44th), Simon Yorston (45th), and Sean Findlay (46th).
