(Reuters) -United States manager Mauricio Pochettino said Sunday's 5-0 thrashing of Trinidad and Tobago in their Gold Cup opener would do his squad the world of good after they came in for some stinging criticism during a four-match losing run.
The U.S., who will co-host next year's World Cup with Canada and Mexico, had come under pressure after a humiliating 4-0 defeat by Switzerland in a friendly last week but found form in California to go top of Group D.
The U.S. were without some of their top players, including Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah, who have decided to skip the tournament, with the high-profile absences prompting criticism from former U.S. stalwarts Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas.
Pochettino said it was important to start the Gold Cup with a "good feeling".
"Today's game was also a difficult one, especially because of the negative things that happened in recent weeks," he was quoted as saying by ESPN.
"Some results that haven't gone well always generate a bit of noise. It's important for the players to have that confidence."
With the World Cup on the horizon, former Tottenham Hotspur boss Pochettino said the Gold Cup would be a chance for players to stake their claim for a place in the squad next year.
"We want to win, but at the same time it's to help the players to perform and to knock (on) the door and say, we can perform for the national team and we can be involved in the next World Cup," he added.
"That is what I expect. Win, and the player really believes that they are having the opportunity...(to) fight for a place in the World Cup."
The U.S. top Group D ahead of Saudi Arabia, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. They next face the Saudis, who beat Haiti 1-0 in their opener, in Texas on Thursday.
The Gold Cup runs until July 6.

Motor racing-Red Bull warned FIA of potential trickery against Verstappen
Formula One F1 - Canadian Grand Prix - Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal, Quebec, Canada - June 15, 2025 Red Bull's Max Verstappen during the race REUTERS/Mathieu Belanger MONTREAL (Reuters) -Red Bull spoke to Formula One's governing body before the Canadian Grand Prix to warn them that Max Verstappen's rivals might try and lure the Dutch driver into a one-race ban, according to team boss Christian Horner. Four-times world champion Verstappen arrived in Montreal with 11 penalty points on his super licence, following a collision with Mercedes' George Russell in Spain, and 12 triggering an automatic suspension. He will not shed any points until after Austria, Red Bull's home race, on June 29. Horner revealed after Sunday's race that Red Bull spoke to race director Rui Marques after a drivers' meeting on Friday to express their concern and ask him to watch out for any potential trickery. "I think that it was inevitable that there was going to be some potential gamesmanship," Horner told reporters. "It's something that we raised after the driver's briefing with the race director, just so that they were mindful of it as well, because it was clear that that kind of stuff goes on. "We just said to him 'Look, could they please keep an eye on it because there's been obviously comments have been raised in the media'." Russell said after qualifying on pole that he had more penalty points to play with than Verstappen and that could work to his advantage. After the Briton won on Sunday, with Verstappen second, Red Bull protested. A subsequent stewards document rejecting the protest revealed that Red Bull had claimed unsportsmanlike behaviour by Russell when the safety car was deployed. Red Bull argued that Russell braked unnecessarily and erratically behind the safety car along the back straight and complained over the team radio that Verstappen had gone past when not allowed to. Red Bull said the radio message "displayed unsportsmanlike intent" and Russell's braking had taken Verstappen by surprise, leaving him no alternative but to overtake momentarily. They also suggested that onboard cameras showed Russell looking in his mirrors before braking "to force (Verstappen) to overtake to force an infringement." Russell denied it, said he was not trying to force an investigation and Mercedes pointed out they had not lodged any complaint. The stewards accepted there had been no unsportsmanlike conduct. Russell and Verstappen have a simmering rivalry and Red Bull have protested twice in the space of five races against the Mercedes driver. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin, editing by Ed Osmond)

The changes, subject to approval by the FA Board, mean that two teams will be automatically promoted from the second-tier WSL2 next season and the third-placed club in tier two will face the bottom club in WSL in a playoff. From the 2026-27 season onwards, the 13th-placed side in the top division will meet the runners-up of WSL2 in a promotion/relegation playoff, and the WSL's bottom club will be relegated and replaced by the winners of the second division. "Expanding the WSL to 14 teams will stimulate movement between leagues and through the pyramid which increases opportunities," WSL CEO Nikki Doucet said. "The introduction of a promotion/relegation playoff creates distinction for the women's game and introduces a high-profile, high stakes match." (Reporting by Trevor Stynes, editing by Ed Osmond)

Malaysia blow 3-0 lead in crushing New Zealand defeat in Nations Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: The national hockey team threw away a three-goal lead to suffer a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat to New Zealand in a Nations Cup Group B match at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Monday. It was the Speedy Tigers' 15th loss to the Black Sticks since the 1975 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia, who drew 3-3 with Pakistan in their opener on Sunday, looked to be cruising after goals from Akhimullah Anuar Esook (18th minute), Fitri Saari (38th) and Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal (39th) gave them a 3-0 advantage. But the defence, led by captain Marhan Jalil, crumbled after the 44th minute. Poor decision-making and two yellow cards proved costly as the hosts conceded four goals in just eight minutes. Fitri was shown a yellow card and sent to the sin bin in the 44th minute, and the Black Sticks quickly capitalised with strikes from Finn Ward (44th), Simon Yorston (45th), and Sean Findlay (46th). Things went from bad to worse when Muhajir Abdu Rauf received a yellow in the 52nd minute, and Ward fired home the winner moments later. The defeat leaves Malaysia with just one point from two matches. They now face a must-win clash against Japan on Wednesday to keep their semi-final hopes alive. New Zealand sealed their spot in the last four with back-to-back wins, while Pakistan, on four points, only need a draw against the Kiwis to join them in the semi-finals. National coach Sarjit Singh was livid after the collapse. "We had the game under full control but paid the price when we picked up two yellow cards," he said. "It's really disappointing. We had three points in our hands, but we blew it." New Zealand coach Greg Nicol admitted his side were fortunate. "I'm really proud of our second-half performance. I never expected us to score four goals in eight minutes." Meanwhile, Pakistan edged Japan 3-2 to stay on track for the semi-finals. The Green Shirts netted through Ali Ghazanfar (8th), Ashraf Rana Waheed (34th) and Sufyan Khan (52nd), while Kazumasa Matsumoto (9th) and Koji Yamasaki (11th) replied for Japan. Ashraf, who was named player of the match, said: "We achieved our mission by collecting full points. We hope to get a good result against New Zealand to reach the last four." Results Group A: South Korea 3 Wales 2, South Africa 3 France 4; Group B: Japan 2 Pakistan 3, New Zealand 4 Malaysia 3. Fixtures Tuesday Rest Day Wednesday Group A: South Korea v South Africa (2pm), France v Wales (4pm); Group B: New Zealand v Pakistan (6pm), Japan vs Malaysia (8pm). * All matches at National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil
