Starlink begins operations in Bangladesh

Time of India21-05-2025

Dhaka:
Starlink
, a satellite internet service owned by
Elon Musk
's SpaceX, has officially started operations in Bangladesh, an aide to the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus of the Bangladesh interim government said on Tuesday.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, Faiz Ataiyeb Ahmad, wrote, "Starlink has officially launched in Bangladesh. They informed me about it by phone yesterday afternoon and confirmed it on their X handle this morning."
"Starlink is initially launching with two packages - Starlink Residence and Residence Lite. The monthly cost for one is 6,000 taka ($47) and the other is 4,200 taka ($33). However, there will be a one-time cost 47,000 taka ($372) for the setup equipment", he added.
Ahmad said that people can use unlimited data at speeds up to 300 Megabits per second (Mbps).
"There are no speed or data limits. Individuals can use unlimited data at speeds up to 300 Mbps. Customers in Bangladesh can place orders starting today. This has fulfilled Sir's (Chief Adviser) expectation of starting the journey within 90 days", Ahmad stated.
The interim government in Bangladesh allowed Starlink to offer its services after a trial run on April 9. Starlink aims to provide high-speed internet access to even remote areas in the country.
Ahmed said, "Although expensive, this has created a sustainable alternative for premium customers to access high-quality and high-speed internet services."
"In addition, in areas where fiber or high-speed internet services have not yet reached, companies will have the opportunity to expand their business, and NGOs, freelancers, and entrepreneurs will be guaranteed uninterrupted high-speed internet throughout the year", he stated
Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh interim government, congratulated everyone involved.
Earlier in February, Yunus had invited SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to visit Bangladesh and launch Starlink satellite service in the country in 90 days. Yunus wrote a letter to Musk on February 19.
At the time, the statement shared by the Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh on X said, "Chief Adviser invites Elon Musk to visit Bangladesh and launch Starlink in 90 working days. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has invited top US businessman and Chief Executive Officer of SpaceX Elon Musk to visit Bangladesh and launch Starlink satellite service in the country."
"In a letter to Musk on February 19, the Chief Adviser told Musk his visit to Bangladesh would allow him to meet Bangladeshi young men and women who will be among the main beneficiaries of this leading technology," he added.

Starbase city grows near Elon Musk's launch site and wilderness refuges

Elon Musk has a long way to go before colonising Mars, but the controversial billionaire already has his own city on a flat patch of Texas, where giant, experimental Starship rockets roar over the incongruous sight of dolphins, and some skeptical human neighbors. Starbase on the south Texas coast is HQ for the Starship project and something of a shrine to its South African-born founder, the world's richest man and until recently one of President Donald Trump's closest advisors. Musk's short Washington tenure spearheading the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, ended last week, with a vow to get back to his day job of running his business empire, including SpaceX, Tesla and Starlink. The departure came as investors grew increasingly nervous about the spillover from Musk's reputational damage after publicly allying himself to Trump and tearing through the U.S. government in search of spending cuts. Now he hopes to hunker down in Starbase near the Mexican border and get back to the matter of reaching Mars. The scene is a curious mix of futuristic high-tech and down-to-earth attractions for a city that was officially incorporated in May but remains very much a work-in-progress. Cars speed down the narrow Boca Chica Boulevard leading to Starbase, where an AFP film crew was not allowed to enter. A huge bust of Musk on the outskirts of the settlement was vandalized in April and now stands with the right cheek peeled off, covered by a giant plaster. A cluster of buildings rises near the launch site, including an imposing corporate tower that bears Musk's X logo and prefabricated houses painted black, white, and gray. For now, the city has only about 500 residents, some still living in trailers and some in the prefab homes, which have patios and outdoor grills. Looming over the landscape are two models of super heavy launchers and one Starship rocket. "I think it's pretty cool, making a whole entire city based around a launch site," said 21-year-old computer engineer Dominick Cardenas who was visiting the area for the unsuccessful test launch last week. "Maybe I'll move down here one day. Who knows? I'd love to go to Mars, who wouldn't?" But the space city is surrounded by nature and wildlife, especially birds. Activist Christopher Basaldu, who is a member of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Native American tribe and holds a PhD in sociocultural anthropology, called Musk a "colonizer." "The land here is sacred to the original inhabitants of the area. And SpaceX is polluting and desecrating this land," he told AFP. There are two federal wildlife refuges in the area where SpaceX operates: the Lower Rio Grande Valley and the Laguna Atascosa. There is also the Boca Chica Beach, where residents have been spending their summers for decades and which is now closed during test flights. "There isn't supposed to be exploding rockets next to pristine wetlands and habitat," Hinojosa said. In 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency fined SpaceX for unauthorised discharges of water from its deluge system into wetlands near its Starbase launch pad connected to the Rio Grande. Despite protests by Hinjosa and other groups, SpaceX received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to increase the number of launches per year from five to 25. Hinojosa calls it "very much a David versus Goliath situation." "We are one of the poorest communities in the country... and we're dealing with the biggest bully on the planet, Elon Musk," she said. "Elon Musk has so much power that he's found a way around most of our lawsuits," she added. According to a document obtained by CNBC, Starbase City officials have notified the residents that they might "lose the right to continue using" their property as they currently do. A hearing is scheduled for the end of June to discuss the new zoning plan. SpaceX is also building the Rio West giant shopping mall and restaurant complex near Starbase, valued at $15 million, according to official filings. And environmental activists worry that the Rio Grande liquified natural gas plant being built in the neighboring city of Brownsville, which has the capacity to process methane, a gas that powers Starship, could become Musk's fueling station. SpaceX representatives, Starbase City Mayor Bobby Peden as well as Cameron County officials did not respond to AFP requests for comment for this story.

Vietnam, US to speed up trade talks: Hanoi

Vietnam and the United States have agreed to speed up trade talks, Hanoi said Thursday, as it announced $600 million in deals to buy US agricultural products. Vietnam has the third-biggest trade surplus with the United States, after China and Mexico, and is anxious to address the imbalance to head off President Donald Trump's threatened 46 percent levy as part of his global tariff blitz. Vietnamese and US officials agreed at a meeting in Paris on Wednesday to "focus maximum efforts to achieve the best results in the third technical negotiation round" scheduled for the first half of June, the communist country's trade ministry said in a statement. Trade minister Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed Vietnam's "determination and goodwill" to reach an agreement with the United States, while his American counterpart Jamieson Greer said a deal would be important for Washington as well as Hanoi, according to the statement. Meanwhile, a delegation from Vietnam's agriculture ministry visiting the United States signed memorandums of understanding to buy raw materials for animal feed from Ohio worth $600 million, the ministry said in a separate statement on its website Thursday. That comes after Vietnam announced five MOUs to buy products worth around $800 million from Iowa over three years, including soybean meal, corn, wheat, dried soybeans and dried distillers grains. The Southeast Asian country was expected to sign deals with the United States to buy more than $2 billion worth of agricultural products in total, the statement added. Vietnam has been seeking help to solve the tariff stand-off from several US tech and industry giants, including Lockheed Martin, SpaceX and Google. It also signed an agreement with US company Westinghouse Electric on nuclear power development. Trump's real estate group broke ground last month in Vietnam on a $1.5-billion luxury resort and golf course 40 kilometres southeast of the capital Hanoi. His son Eric Trump, an executive vice president of the Trump Organization, and his wife Lara attended the event, as well as local partner the Kinhbac City Development Corporation. Eric Trump has also been scouting locations for a potential tower project in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's southern business hub. tmh/aph/pdw/cms LOCKHEED MARTIN GOOGLE

France, Germany, UK…Tesla sales slump across Europe as electric car market surges

Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, K.B.A., data shows that registration of new Tesla cars is more than a third of the same month last year, despite being Europe's prime location for car sales read more Tesla to launch its robotaxi services in Austin by June 12. AFP More and more car buyers are becoming wary of Tesla across Europe. Germany has recorded a drop in EV sales for the fifth month in a row, although the country saw an overall increase in electric vehicle purchases. Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, K.B.A., data shows that registration of new Tesla cars is more than a third of the same month last year, despite being Europe's prime location for car sales. Elon Musk's Tesla has been witnessing a steep drop in sales, which partly has precedence on his embrace of right-wing ideology. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Musk officially backed Germany's far-right AfD party ahead of the country's parliamentary elections. He is also a strong critic of unions, with Tesla having clashed with labour organisations in Scandinavian countries. The Tesla CEO contributed almost $300 million towards re-electing U.S. President Donald Trump and later pushed for the Trump administration to reduce the size of federal agencies. This sparked protests at Tesla dealerships throughout Europe. Other EV makers boom in Germany It's not like car buyers in Germany have given up on electric vehicles altogether. Sales of China's BYD cards, Tesla's main rival, have grown ninefold in Germany. The company took Tesla's title as the world's largest EV seller earlier this year. The company has been rapidly expanding into European markets, with plans to establish local production at its plants in Hungary and Turkey to counter the EU's higher tariffs on Chinese-made EV imports. Additionally, BYD intends to raise up to $5.2 billion through a share sale in Hong Kong to support its global expansion, according to a source familiar with the deal. Tesla sales plunge in other countries The Musk-run company has been losing customers in other European countries, too. Tesla's new car sales in Britain tumbled more than 45 per cent from a year earlier in May, preliminary data from research group New AutoMotive showed on Wednesday. The automaker sold 1,758 units in Britain last month, down from 3,244 a year earlier, the data showed. Sales in France dropped by 67 per cent, in Spain by 29 per cent and in Sweden by 53 per cent. However, Norway remains a rare bright spot, with sales tripling thanks to the revamped Model Y. Why have Tesla's sales dropped? Analysts attribute Tesla's struggles to growing competition from Chinese brands, EU tariffs on Chinese EVs, and consumer backlash against CEO Elon Musk's political affiliations and activism in Europe. Musk downplayed the issue, calling the European market 'quite weak,' but data shows rising EV adoption overall, suggesting Tesla is losing market share rather than the market shrinking. Tesla's Berlin Gigafactory supplies Europe but has faced production retooling delays and market headwinds, contributing to the sales slump.
