Mesa County Sheriff's Office highlights Mental Health Clinicians for EMS week
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — From May 21 to May 28, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office created a series of social media posts to highlight its Mental Health Clinicians of the Mesa County Sheriff's Office Co-Response Team for EMS week.
In 2023, the Mesa County Co-Response was initiated to improve the response to mental health crises in the community by integrating clinicians into patrol teams. The Mental Health Clinicians respond to emergency calls and work together with a deputy to de-escalate situations that could lead to arrest or hospitalization, assess individuals and direct them to local resources.
The highlighted Mental Health Clinicians include:
Dr. Pamela Shannahan-Sturgon, who is the Mesa County Sheriff's Office Co-Response Team Clinical Supervisor and has a doctorate in behavioral health. Shannahan-Sturgon has over 20 years of clinical and supervisory experience, in which she has developed and led integrated health and behavioral health programs for underserved populations.
Paul McGinnet, who started his professional mental health career at Mind Springs Health before he transitioned to the sheriff's office to serve in Co-Response. In the post, McGinnet said, 'I am deeply passionate about my work, as I thrive on helping individuals in crisis and connecting them with resources that can help them avoid unnecessary psychiatric admissions or incarceration.'
Liz Elliot, a mental health professional who has been in the human services field since 2013 after graduating from Aurora University in Illinois. She has gained experience in interacting with different community members, helping with regulation and de-escalation and providing individualized resources.
Justin Morgan, a Mental Health Clinician with experience in veterinary technology and mental health. Morgan has been a mental health worker and team lead at an inpatient facility, a crisis clinician for both mobile and walk-in clinics. He has been a co-responder since April 2024.
Tara Butson, a mental health professional with licensed experience in addiction counseling and social work, has served in roles such as a jail-based behavioral health therapist for San Miguel and Archuleta counties and as an adolescent and family case manager.
Michael LeFebre, a licensed clinical social worker who has worked as a mental health clinician for over 35 years. In the post, LeFebre said, 'It has been extremely gratifying to work in Mesa County supporting and promoting the wellness of our community.'
The final post in the series from the Mesa County Sheriff's Office also mentions the two Co-Response Deputies in the program: Deputies Huisjen and Strauch, who have received specialized mental and behavioral health training.
'Co-Response addresses the unique mental health needs of the community, and we look forward to seeing the program flourish,' the Mesa County Sheriff's Office stated in the final post.

Yes, George Clooney Has Seen The Pitt — Here's What the ER Vet Had to Say About Noah Wyle's New Medical Show
TV's erstwhile Dr. Ross speaks highly of Dr. Robby: During an appearance on Monday's Late Night With Seth Meyers, George Clooney sang ER co-star Noah Wyle's praises, marveling at his performance in the Max medical drama The Pitt. 'Have you guys seen that show?' Clooney asked Meyers' audience. 'It's so good, and I have to say: We've been really dear friends since [ER] — since we did the pilot of the show. He is just the most honorable, talented young man, [which] I get to say because I'm an old man, and I cannot be happier for his success on the show. The show is just a beautiful show, and he does just a great job with it.' More from TVLine The Pitt's Noah Wyle & Co. Talk Taking Robby to the Very Edge in Finale and 'Getting Mentally Healthy' in Season 2 The Pitt Season 2 Premise, Time Jump and Premiere Month Confirmed — Plus, Who Is (and Is Not) Returning Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Trailer Offers First Glimpse at Maggie Smith Tribute - Watch Clooney's recognition followed an anecdote about his days as hotshot County General doc Doug Ross, and how often he struggled with some of the medical jargon. 'We used to do these things called oners,' he recalled. 'You've got to get 12 pages of dialogue out and nobody can screw up, or you have to start all over again. I'm at the very end of the oner, at Page 12, and I have one line — supraventricular tachyarrhythmia — and I'm telling you, I never got it! Literally! We did, like, 40 takes, and the rest of the cast is, like, 'Are you f–king kidding me?'' When Meyers pointed out that Wyle is once again faced with difficult doctor terminology, Clooney noted that Wyle 'never had trouble' on ER. 'He always could do it, and I hated him for that,' the Tony nominee deadpanned. Clooney and Wyle recently reunited with fellow ER castmates Anthony Edwards and Julianna Margulies at the April premiere of Clooney's Broadway show, Good Night, and Good Luck, which is up for five Tonys this weekend. CNN is set to broadcast the penultimate performance on Saturday, June 7. The Pitt, meanwhile, took home the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Drama Series on Monday. The streaming hit was previously renewed for Season 2, which is set to premiere in January 2026. The Pitt Season 2: Everything We Know View List Wyle recently visited TVLine's New York City studio and marked the 25th anniversary of an unforgettable ER episode — Season 6's 'Be Still My Heart,' which culminated in the gruesome stabbings of both Dr. Carter and med student Lucy Knight. Measles exposure location found in Grand Junction
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced one of the state's confirmed measles cases passed through Grand Junction. On Tuesday, May 27, an adult from El Paso County who tested positive for measles passed through the Love's Travel Stop and Carl's Jr at 748 22 Road. Alli Howe, chief health strategist for Mesa County Public Health, says symptoms can take up to three weeks to develop. 'The initial symptoms of measles are going to start with cough and fever. After about three to five days of active symptoms, that's when you're going to start to see some of that more visible rash that people associate with measles virus,' she says. Howe says anyone who was exposed and showing symptoms should reach out to public health at 970-254-4120. 'We would like folks who were at Love's Travel Stop and Carl's Jr on 22nd Road in Grand Junction on Tuesday, May 27, between the hours of 6 and 10 p.m. to contact our disease surveillance team. If they were there from those times and they have any of those symptoms, we'd like to hear from you because we want to make sure if you were exposed that you get the best care possible.' Howe tells WesternSlopeNow there's not a major concern about a measles outbreak in Mesa County. 'What's great about local public health is we always have these systems in place for if and when something happens with one of these highly infectious diseases… we have ongoing relationships with our school districts and our hospitals, places where there are a lot of people convening together, such as public schools, for if we do have a cluster of more cases. But to date, this potential exposure is the only one we have in Mesa County,' Howe says. Howe encourages those who are able to get the MMR vaccine if they haven't already. You can do so at the Mesa County Public Health Clinic as well as many primary care facilities and pharmacies. 'I think we're safe as long as we keep doing what we're really good at in Mesa County, taking care of each other and doing that preventative work,' Howe said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
