SAPS destroys 6 million ml of illegal alcohol in Tshwane

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tshwane has destroyed over 6.4 million millilitres of confiscated alcohol, reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on illegal liquor trading.
The destruction took place on Wednesday, 21 May 2025, at the Tshwane Metro Water works in Pretoria-Central.
SAPS officers, under the command of District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine and overseen by Brigadier Kushie Pietersen, Station Commander of Brooklyn SAPS, carried out the disposal.
The alcohol was seized during year-long enforcement efforts across all 36 police stations in the district.
These included compliance inspections, targeted raids, and high-density operations as part of Operation Shanela.
Police made most of the confiscations after finding traders violating the Liquor Act. Offences included selling alcohol without a licence or running illegal outlets.
SAPS has warned that illegal alcohol trading contributes to a range of crimes and societal issues, including domestic violence, assault and public disorder.
Major-General Thine emphasised the need to address the socio-economic consequences of alcohol abuse which strain both policing and healthcare resources.
'We will not hesitate to act against those who violate the law. Non-compliant establishments will face fines, closure and the confiscation of all liquor on the premises,' Thine said.
Law enforcement operations aimed at curbing the illegal sale and distribution of alcohol will continue throughout Tshwane.
SAPS has urged liquor traders and restaurant owners to fully comply with licence conditions or risk losing their stock and operating permits.
Police say removing illicit liquor from circulation is vital to restoring public order and fostering safer communities.

Pilot and two passengers on missing aircraft in KZN, confirmed dead

"We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased passengers," said MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KZN, Siboniso Duma. "ARCC informed us that they will be handing over the matter to the South African Police Service's (SAPS) Accident and Incident Investigation Division and the South African Civil Aviation Authority for the official investigation. The aircraft , which left the Virginia Airport at around 3pm on the day was reportedly operated by a student pilot. The Pyper Cherokee aircraft that went missing on Sunday has been found. However, the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) has confirmed that all three passengers aboard, were found dead. The Pyper Cherokee aircraft with the registration of ZSKFB was last seen on Sunday. The aircraft took off from Virginia Airport, Durban, around 3pm and did not reach its intended destination. It was last tracked flying over Ladysmith, heading south towards either Pietermaritzburg or Greytown. Duma said they were informed by the ARCC that they would be handing over the matter to the SAPS's Accident and Incident Investigation Division and the South African Civil Aviation Authority for the official investigation. He said they were in communication with Zama Biyela, the mother of the late student pilot (Nqobile Biyela). "This is the most difficult period for her and the entire family. "Losing such a young great leader with a promising career in the aviation industry, under such circumstances, is not only tragic but devastating. "Officials from my office and Ayanda Msweli, the country's leading traffic anchor, are in touch with Biyela family and we will locate the other families to express our condolences, and we salute rescue teams for their display of efficiency." He singled out ARCC, SAPS Search and Rescue, Fire and Rescue Okhahlamba, Search and Rescue Zone Association, KZN Provincial EMS, Hamnet, ER24, Netcare911, Berg Flying, Greytown G911, Umboti Community Services, MTN and the Bhanoyi Airfield Estate for their efforts in the search mission. Meanwhile, Duma said his department had announced plans in April, through guidance from the aviation industry and the Economic Regulations for Transport Act, regarding major work being done at various airports in the province like Margate, Oribi, Umkhuze, Richards Bay and Virginia Airports. "We are currently harmonising our work with relevant departments such as SA Aviation Authority, Airport Company of South Africa, Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs," he said. Missing Comrades Marathon runner: NEW info comes to light

The Comrades Marathon runner who went missing after completing Sunday's 'down run' was found by construction workers in a hypothermic state on Monday around 07:30 – some 15 hours after she crossed the finish line. Moira Harding, 54, who was competing in the colours of Fish Hoek Athletic Club in the Western Cape, was found near the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) base in The Point, Durban. The base is situated roughly 7km from the new Comrades Marathon finish on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue at People's Park. The workers initially thought she was out training, but soon realised she was in fact in distress. Harding, who lives in Kommetjie, took a respectable 10:52:03 to complete the 89.98km run, well inside the 12-hour cut-off. At the time of publishing it remains unclear how Harding ended up near the NSRI base, although reports indicate that she is a good friend of one of the station commanders at the base and that it was possible that she could have been walking there to find a safe space. She was found lying on her back in a semi-conscious state and hypothermic having been out in the cold the whole night. Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, provided a key update. Jamieson said a few 'leads' were followed. In providing an update on her condition, he said: 'It had a lot to do with temperature, she had just finished a marathon, a very long run, and your body is already tired. Then with the weather and being outside all night, anyone would be cold, especially with the rain. 'She was extremely cold, hypothermic, which leads to a further state of confusion.' He added that Harding would have been sent to St Augustine's Hospital, but due to the seriousness of her condition, a helicopter was called in and she was taken to Umhlanga Netcare Hospital.
