The family of 30-year-old Olorato Mongale has reacted to the discovery, seizure, and arrest of the owner of the white VW Polo linked to the murder of their child, whose body was found in Lombardy West on Sunday.
The arrest of the car's owner and the continued search for three other suspects, Bongani Mthimkhulu, Fezile Ngubane, and Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya, comes as scores of mourners gathered for a candlelight service in memory of Mongale in Lombardy West on Wednesday night.
Mthimkulu was added as the third suspect as investigations continue to intensify, with members of the public urged to contact the police should they spot any of the three suspects.
The service coincided with a report by members of the South African Police Service's (SAPS) National Crime Intelligence Unit, confirming the discovery of the white VW Polo.
On Sunday, Mongale, who had gone out on a date with the driver of the vehicle found with cloned registration plates, had informed her friends that should they not hear from her in an hour's time, they should begin searching for her.

Needless to say, her body was found later on Sunday, with the national police assuming a manhunt for the man named John, believed to be her alleged killer.
On Wednesday evening, SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe indicated that they have found and seized the wanted VW Polo in KwaMashu, Durban, following an investigation led by a multi-disciplinary team. The owner of the vehicle was subsequently arrested while the search for the three suspects continues.
"A multidisciplinary team led by the SAPS anti-kidnapping task team seized the vehicle at a panel beater workshop in Phoenix, Durban. The investigation first led the team to a lodge in Kew, Johannesburg, where two suspects had booked a room. Further intelligence led them to KwaMashu in Durban to the home of one of the suspects.
"The suspects' vehicle was later found at the panel beater workshop. Upon inspection by SAPS forensic experts, traces of blood were found inside the vehicle. An elderly man believed to be the owner of the vehicle has been arrested, but police are still searching for three men believed to have been directly involved in the murder of Olorato," Mathe stated.
Fezile Ngubane is one of the wanted suspects linked to the murder of Olorato Mongale.

The two suspects, who have been identified as Fezile Ngubane and Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya, were joined by the third suspect, Bongani Mthimkhulu. All three are currently on the run.
Reacting to the seizure of the vehicle and the identification of the alleged suspects, family spokesperson, Criselda Kananda, welcomed the arrest, adding that the family is still shaken and devastated by the events that have led to the death of their child.
"As can be expected, we are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved daughter, Olorato Mongale. We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the police service for their diligent work in locating the car involved in the criminal act that led to her untimely death. While we take a small measure of comfort in this progress, we remain devastated by the fact that the suspects are still at large.
"We urge the community to continue to come together and assist in bringing them to justice. These suspects are still out there and possibly continuing to commit atrocious crimes. Someone must have information that could help the investigation. We plead with you to come forward. They have no place in our beautiful country," she said.

NMU student sentenced to life for girlfriend's murder

A Nelson Mandela University student who stabbed his former partner to death in her dorm room has been sentenced to life behind bars. The George Regional Court found 20-year-old Luyanda Mahlanza guilty of murdering Zimkhitha Ntshisela, also a 20-year-old student, rejecting his version of events that painted the attack as self-defence. Mahlanza attacked Ntshisela on 6 June 2023 in her university residence. According to IOL , the pair were alone in her room when students heard a commotion and called a student assistant. Using a spare key, the assistant entered the room and found Mahlanza in the act of repeatedly stabbing Ntshisela. The assistant managed to restrain him, stopping the attack. During the trial, Mahlanza claimed Ntshisela had confronted him about cheating and came at him with a knife. The court rejected the claim due to a lack of evidence, and prosecutor Advocate Karin Barnard accused the student of planning the murder and acting out of rage. The court noted that Mahlanza's late guilty plea seemed more tactical than remorseful. An attempt to soften his punishment rather than accept responsibility. Olorato Mongale's family pleads with SAns to show compassion to man cleared as suspect in her murder

BLOEMFONTEIN - The family of Olorato Mongale is pleading with South Africans to show compassion towards Fezile Ngubane, the man police cleared in connection with the 30-year-old's murder. Ngubane was taken in for questioning last week, but authorities have since confirmed that he played no role in Mongale's death. The master's student was laid to rest in Bloemfontein on Sunday, a week after her body was found dumped in Lombardy West in Gauteng. They said that Mongale would not have wanted Ngubane to pay for a crime he didn't commit, adding that the 30-year-old would have wanted the KwaZulu-Natal man to rebuild his life. The Mongale family said that Ngubane was also a casualty, adding they believed that Olorato fought for justice from beyond the grave. "The most incredible thing that happened with Olorato is that as she goes, as she bows out, she made sure that a co-victim is liberated because he was wrongfully accused," said family spokesperson Chriselda Kananda. The family said they were still searching for closure, with the second suspect still on the run.

Olorato Mongale murder: After being cleared as a suspect, Fezile Ngubane vows to turn life around

JOHANNESBURG - After being mistakenly being named as a suspect in the murder of Olorato Mongale, Fezile Ngubane has vowed to turn his life around. Following the killing of Mongale, police released a picture of Ngubane, branding him as a wanted suspect. ALSO READ: - Olorato Mongale murder: Family of man who turned himself in feared he would be killed by vigilantes - Olorato Mongale's family says it won't find peace until all suspects in her murder brought to justice - Olorato Mongale funeral: 'We will not rest until we find Bongani Mthimkhulu' - deputy police minister But after handing himself over to police on Friday, Ngubane was cleared of the allegations when investigations showed that his identity was being used by the masterminds. Mongale's body was found in Johannesburg a few hours after she went missing. Fezile spends most of his days washing cars and smoking whoonga, a common drug also known as nyoape. It's not how his parents imagined his life would turn out after he enrolled for a qualification in civil engineering at the Mangosuthu University of Technology many years ago. Fezile's father, Mandlakhe Ngubane, said the incident was a wake-up call for him not to waste his life. "He was very smart. He is naturally a smart person. I sent him to a Muslim school in Johannesburg, but he was expelled in Grade 11 because of the drugs he was smoking." Mandlakhe said that while Fezile finished his matric, he could never shake off the drugs, which eventually destroyed his potential. The main suspect in Mongale's murder was killed during a shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal last week, while a second suspect is still on the run.
