Boy saves his dog after poisoned meatballs are thrown over fence, PA cops say

Miami Herald15-05-2025

A Pennsylvania man was arrested after police said he tried to poison his neighbor's dogs.
On May 12, police were called to a home in Broomall and shown a home surveillance video, according to a Marple Township police affidavit.
The video showed a man wearing a hoodie, standing on the homeowner's property, throwing something into their fenced-in yard at around 4:45 a.m., police said.
At 6:45 a.m., the homeowner's 12-year-old son took their two Shih Tzu/Bichon mix dogs outside and noticed one of the dogs started to eat a meatball. The boy stopped the dog from eating the meatball, which was filled with rodent poison pellets, police said.
Police said they found 10 meatballs filled with poison when they arrived at the home.
Officers searched the area and knocked on neighbor Mark Nugent's door. When he answered, Nugent was in the same clothes as the man seen in the surveillance video, police said.
Officers told Nugent they identified him as the person in the video and Nugent told them the dogs annoy him because they 'bark all day,' according to police.
When asked what he threw into the yard, Nugent said, 'it was just hamburger that's it,' police said.
However, officers 'asked what the green stuff was,' and Nugent said 'it was something to make the dog sick,' the complaint said.
Days before the meatballs were found, the homeowners found hundreds of chocolate discs in their yard, but didn't have surveillance cameras up at the time, police said. They were able to clean it up before the dogs ate any of it.
'The guy took his time at 4 o'clock in the morning, both times with the chocolate, and this time to make meatballs and put rat poison in them. I mean, he was right outside my bedroom window doing this,' Joshua Hunter told WPVI.
The dogs were reported to be fine, police said.
Nugent, 61, was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, cruelty to animals, loitering and prowling at night time, criminal trespass/simple trespasser, disorderly conduct and harassment - course of conduct with no legitimate purpose. He was released after posting $5,000 of $50,000 bail. He's due back in court May 29.
Attorney information for Nugent was unavailable.
'I'm sitting here with ALS in a wheelchair with five kids, and my girlfriend and I don't feel safe at all. We're losing sleep. In the meantime, this guy is out, and I don't know what's going to happen,' Hunter told WPVI.
Broomall is about a 10-mile drive west from Philadelphia.

Justice found for victim of vicious dog attack in Manoa

MANOA, Hawaii (KHON2) — An Oahu dog owner thought she would never get justice after her beloved pet was killed in a dog attack in 2024, but that has changed after some persistence and attention. A walk in a Manoa Park turned deadly for Emogene Yoshimura's Bichon, Kiki, when a large unleashed dog attacked in 2024. Beloved dog slain in Manoa attack: 'It could have been a child!' 'He came out of his yard, chased us, knocked me to the ground and he bit Kiki on her neck and punctured her trachea,' Yoshimura said. The case was initially dismissed, but was reopened after attention was brought to the issue in 2024. Yoshimura was awarded restitution that included all expenses for her new Bishon puppy, Calia, paid for by the owner of the dangerous dog after a court ruling in April 2025. 'It was such a nightmare when I lost Kiki. And I had nightmares about every night until this one appeared,' Yoshimura said. 'It was a nightmare experience and I hope no one ever has to live through that again.' Check out more news from around Hawaii Emogene said that she will never walk around the park again with her new pup and while the restitution will not bring Kiki back, she hopes her story will serve as encouragement for other victims to come forward and file a police report if they have gone through a similar situation. A new law to increase punishments for owners of dangerous dogs will take effect on July 1, but the Hawaiian Humane Society said the community has to be the initiator. 'Really, you need to be your own advocate because we're not at a point yet, where the system in and of itself takes these cases seriously,' said Hawaiian Humane Society Community Engagement Director Steph Kendrick. 'Think about the community and make that report.' Oahu woman still seeking justice months after brutal dog attack HHS had a message for owners who like to walk their dog off-leash. 'It does not matter how 'friendly' your dog is, it does not matter how 'friendly' the on leash dog is. You are threatening that dog,' Kendrick said. Yoshimura's legal battle paid off and resulted in a bit of closure and a new companion. Rescuers Have Message for Owner Who Dumped Sick Dog: 'In a Lot of Pain'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. After saving a skinny, urine-stained dog from the streets, the Animal Rescue League of NH (New Hampshire) shared a heartfelt message for the people who abandoned her, hoping to inspire others in a similar position to reconsider their actions. "We want you to know that your little girl was found and is safe," writes the rescue in a Facebook post shared on Sunday, captioned "A Letter to 'Rae's' Previous Owners," which has received over 1,000 likes and 109 comments on the platform. "We are sure that it was frustrating watching her constantly pee and bleed in your home. We are sure she damaged floors and rugs, and it was a lot to clean up. She didn't want to be a disappointment in that way. We are sure she loved you, she seems to love everyone. She was in a lot of pain," the post continues. Naomi Stevens, chief operating officer of the Animal Rescue League of NH in Bedford, New Hampshire, told Newsweek that on May 20, they arrived at the shelter to find that the police had dropped off a small stray dog in the overnight kennels, which are accessible only to police departments. "I knew immediately that something was off. She was really skinny, covered in urine staining, and straining to urinate, and it was small amounts that were dark and bloody," Stevens said. "We checked lost reports and scoured the lost and found Facebook groups and the police compared her description to any licensed dogs in the town. But to no avail. It was clear someone wasn't looking for her. They either abandoned her or she got out and they just thought it was easier to let someone else deal with her situation." After getting the Shih Tzu an X-ray, they found a giant bladder stone filling the entirety of the organ, which had possibly been growing for months, and could have killed Rae had she spent more time outside with no medical help. "We are fortunate to have our shelter veterinarian, Dr. Stephanie Magnarelli, who was able to operate to successfully remove the stone as well as spay her and bring all of her vaccines current. She is recovering beautifully from her surgery. She was always a sweet little girl, but now her big, bubbly personality is shining through," Stevens said. Animal Rescue League of NH Not only has Rae been given a new lease on life, but she may have already found a new loving family as well. "Her finder who called the police to bring her to us expressed interest in adopting her, and is coming this week to meet her and hopefully finalize an adoption," Stevens said. While they have a strong suspicion of where Rae came from, the shelter's message to the people who abandoned her is one of empathy and support. "Very sad that they went this route, but we wanted to reach them in a nonjudgmental way and speak to not only them but to others who might find themselves with a pet with a medical condition they can't manage or afford," Stevens said. "We have programs to help. We want to put the welfare of the animals first, but we can't support the animals without helping the people who love them as well. Casting harsh judgment and/or criticism will only make people less comfortable coming to us when they do need our help, potentially resulting in more 'Raes.'" Each year, 5.8 million pets enter U.S. shelters, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The length of time dogs, especially large dogs, spend in shelters before being adopted has increased over the last five years. Around 607,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.
