Pinoy spouses, children say goodbye to deported Chinese POGO workers

GMA Network2 days ago

Filipino spouses and children bid farewell to Chinese loved ones who are Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) workers being deported back to China.
In Saleema Refran's Tuesday report on '24 Oras,' alias 'Jacque' expressed worry for the Chinese father of her six-month-old baby.
She said she plans to follow her partner to China. But for other Filipinos, it may be the last time they will see their Chinese loved ones.
'Bigyan po sila ng chance kung wala naman pong case na kasangkot ng mga iligal ganun. Pagbigyan po na mapalaya po,' alias 'Marie' said.
(Give them a chance if they are not involved in illegal activities. I hope they will be freed.)
At least 100 Chinese citizens are being deported to Shanghai, China. They were nabbed during the anti-POGO operation in scam hubs in Cebu, Cavite, Parañaque, and Pasay.
The Chinese government paid for their fare to China without any layovers.
'Importante ito sa kanila dahil marami silang nakukuhang impormasyon dito sa bosses especially kung paano sila nag ooperate, saan sila nag ooperate at anu-anong mga sistema sa money laundering,' Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) executive director Gilbert Cruz.
(This is important to them since they get information about the bosses, especially on how and where they operate, and their system in money laundering.)
Once the deported POGO workers return to China, they will undergo a thorough investigation since some were allegedly involved in large-scale crimes, where many fell victim to different scam hubs allegedly from the Philippines.
These cases involved cybercrime, scamming, fraud, and money laundering.
'Ang pinag-uusapan natin dito, billions of dollars. Yung isang na-turn over natin na wanted person sa kanila, umaabot sa P900 billion ang kanyang nakulimbat o na money launder doon sa kanilang bansa,' Cruz said.
(We're talking about billions of dollars. One person we turned over is a wanted person for a money laundering case in their country, which amounted to P900 billion.)
The PAOCC said since the crackdown on POGO hubs was launched in 2023, about 4,000 people were arrested of whom 2,500 are foreigners deported to their respective countries.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Immigration said it has fixed the delay in the other arrested POGO workers' deportation process.
'Ang main difficulty na lang natin ngayon hindi na yung NBI clearance. Dati kasi medjo ilang buwan pa yung binibilang, ngayon isang araw na lang. Ang magiging challenge ngayon, yung kanilang pasaporte,' BI spokersperson Dana Sandoval said.
(The main difficulty we're facing right now is not the NBI clearance. Before, it was being processed for months, but now, it can be processed in one day. Our current challenge is their passports.) — Mariel Celine Serquiña/BAP, GMA Integrated News

Israel-Iran conflict no impact on OFW remittances — Palace

The raging conflict between Israel and Iran will not affect the overseas Filipino workers' remittances, Malacañang said Thursday. This was according to Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro. Israel and Iran have traded missile strikes for a week, trapping civilians and foreign nationals on both sides of the conflict, triggering international alarm. There are around 30,000 mostly Filipino caregivers in Israel and over 1,000 in Iran. President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. has said there is no need yet to impose the mandatory repatriation of Filipinos amid the escalating tension between the two countries. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

DMW: 150 OFWs in Israel up for repatriation amid Israel-Iran conflict

A drone photo shows the damage over residential homes at the impact site following missile attack from Iran on Israel, in Tel Aviv, Israel June 16, 2025. REUTERS/ Moshe Mizrahi At least 150 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Israel will be repatriated to the Philippines amid ongoing missile strikes between Israel and Iran, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said Thursday. In an interview with Super Radyo dzBB, DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac, who is leaving the country to go to Jordan, said the 150 OFWs are expected to be back to the country as soon as possible in compliance with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.'s directive. "I will make a first stop to Beirut to assure the Filipino community of assistance there, then I will proceed to Jordan as directed by the President. Mandatory repatriation is not yet appropriate, but we know that there are OFWs who are willing to come home, who want to come home, that is why we are facilitating their repatriation, and indeed, out of Jordan, we will undertake the repatriation efforts," Cacdac said. "So far, 150 OFWs want repatriation. I cannot give further details due to security reasons, but rest assured, we will have our first batch coming home [soon] since the Iran-Israel conflict. The situation is quite fluid, so I won't set a timeline, but rest assured, this is being done as soon as possible," he added. Cacdac said the exchange of airstrikes between Israel and Iran have reached an unusual level, to say the least, but not yet to a point of a need of mandatory repatriation due to the existence of bomb shelters both in private and public properties in Israel. "Sa tingin ko, ito ay kakaiba. Let me just put it that way. We have never seen itong ganitong palitan ng missile attacks between the two nations. Of course, nagkaroon na ng mga conflict in the last year or months mula noong October 7 Hamas attack on Israel but this would be different level, different scale," Cacdac said. (This is kind of unusual. We have never seen this level of exchange of missile attacks between the two nations. Of course, there have been conflicts since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, but what is going on now is of a different scale.) "We also have to consider that they have bomb shelters and they have protocols that are widely disseminated. If the residence of the employers of OFWs does not have a bomb shelter, there are municipal bomb shelters," he added. In addition, Cacdac said that of the five Filipinos hurt due to the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, three have already been discharged from the hospital, one is recovering and one is in critical condition. Israel has launched a preemptive strike against Iran six days ago, supposedly to deter Iran's nuclear program. —AOL, GMA Integrated News

DFA: 21 stranded PH officials in Israel safely evacuated to Jordan

Twenty-one stranded Philippine government officials safely crossed into Jordan from Israel amid its escalating conflict with Iran, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday. Of this number, 17 officials attended an agricultural technology training that began June 10 and is supposed to officially end June 20. Two were congressmen, nine mayors, four vice mayors, and two regional directors. The other four are specialists from the Department of Agriculture on dairy industry. "The Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv actively coordinated with the Philippine Embassy in Jordan, relevant authorities, and made the necessary representations with the Israeli government in support of this mission," the DFA said. In Amman, Philippine diplpmats made formal representations to Jordan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and the Jordanian Border Security to secure entry clearance for the officials, it added. The group was met by Philippine Ambassador Wilfredo Santos at the King Hussein Border, where they were provided with the necessary assistance and issued transit visas "at no cost to the Philippine government," the DFA said. In the next few days, the Philippine embassy in Jordan is expected to receive the first group of Filipino workers who will be evacuated from Israel, the DFA said.
