Set to go electric — and it could leave the current top model behind
HOT HATCH Major car brand 'to launch EV version' of popular model next year – and it will be faster than its flagship vehicle
A MAJOR car brand is set to launch an electric version of one of its most popular models next year – and it's tipped to be even faster than the current flagship.
Volkswagen is reportedly preparing to unveil an electric GTI hot hatch, based on its ID.3 model, with a launch expected in 2026, according to Motor1.com.

This comes after the German manufacturer first stepped into the electric hot hatch space last year with the ID.3 GTX.
The new ID.3 GTI will carry the legendary GTI badge, though it won't have the fuel injectors that gave the original its name.
And unlike traditional GTIs, which have front-wheel drive, this electric version will reportedly be rear-wheel drive.
According to Auto Motor and Sport, the ID.3 GTI will deliver around 335hp, that's 13hp more than the current GTX model.
VW is also said to be working on major upgrades to the chassis, steering, and suspension to give drivers a more exciting and responsive experience behind the wheel.
Interestingly, the electric GTI wasn't part of Volkswagen's original plan.
But with delays to the next-generation electric Golf, now expected near the end of the decade, the carmaker is opting for a second facelift of the ID.3 to extend its life on the market.
This update is set to bring the ID.3's design and technology closer to the upcoming ID.2 range.
The ID.3 first launched in 2019 and saw a refresh in 2023.
Inside the Volkswagen ID
With the latest facelift, expected in 2026, the ID.3 GTI will take centre stage as VW's new electric performance star.
VW has already shown off the ID. GTI concept, which previews the company's first electric car to wear the iconic badge.
However, the larger ID.3 GTI now looks likely to beat it to showrooms.
Pricing details are still under wraps, but in Germany, the current ID.3 GTX starts at just over €47,000, while the upcoming ID.2 will launch from around €25,000.
Naturally, the GTI versions will carry a premium.
Several other VW electric models have already received the GTX badge, including the ID.7 saloon, ID.7 Tourer estate, and even the ID.Buzz GTX minivan.
It's still unclear whether Volkswagen plans to eventually replace GTX with the more recognisable GTI name across its electric range.
There's also speculation that an electric R-badged model could follow.
And with rumours that VW may redesign the GTI logo to feature a lightning bolt in place of the 'I,' the brand's electric future is certainly shaping up to be electrifying.

Volkswagen to axe much-loved model after 24 years – with no replacement in sight

Volkswagen is planning the axe the Touareg, drawing a line under one of its most upmarket nameplates. Insiders have told Autocar it will cease to be produced in 2026, leaving the recently introduced Tayron as Volkswagen's largest SUV model in the UK. First launched in 2002, the premium SUV was developed alongside the original Porsche Cayenne, sharing the same platform and fulfilling a dual purpose: giving Porsche its first SUV and helping former Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piëch to realise his ambition of elevating the Volkswagen brand with upmarket models such as the Touareg and its saloon sibling, the Phaeton. The decision to retire the Touareg reflects changing priorities at Volkswagen. The Tayron is positioned as a lower-cost alternative with broader appeal and now fulfils much of the Touareg's role. Already on sale in key global markets and offered in both two- and three-row forms, the Tayron offers a 2500kg towing capacity in 2.0 TSI 4Motion guise and has a more versatile interior. With no direct successor planned, the Touareg's departure marks the end of Volkswagen's push into the premium market after 23 years. Alongside the Touareg, VW has also decided to retire the ID 5 from its line-up. Launched in 2021 as a more sporting, coupé-styled sibling to more upright ID 4, it was primarily aimed at the Chinese market, but failed to gain significant traction there. In Europe, too, it has been overshadowed by the more practical ID 4. It was never offered in the US. Its planned discontinuation is set to take effect in 2027 and forms part of broader efforts to streamline the range and concentrate on high-volume models. Elsewhere, previously reported plans for what one key Wolfsburg insider describes as a 'mini Buzz' – a compact but practical MEB-based electric MPV model to succeed the Touran – have been discussed within the Volkswagen boardroom. However, sources close to Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer say it is not a priority, with sibling company Skoda now considering such a model as part of its future line-up. 'We looked at it, but the market is demanding crossovers and SUV models,' said the source. 'This is the direction we ultimately decided to go in.' The decision not to press ahead with an electric MPV model is partly due to engineering capacity at Volkswagen's Braunschweig R&D centre in Germany being pushed to the limit by potentially more important models, most notably the electric Golf.

Citroën Holidays review: Affordable alternative to the default Volkswagen campervan

In case you've missed the news, a new Volkswagen California campervan arrives this summer. The quintessential modern VW camper will now be based on the Multivan people carrier, rather than the Transporter panel van, giving it a more car-like feel. In addition, Volkswagen says it has a more stylish and upmarket interior. You don't need to be a genius to work out that behind the rather cheesy moniker, the Citroën Holidays has the California firmly in its sights – and just in time for the summer rush. The French alternative, which has been developed for Citroën by Slovenian outfit Bravia Mobil, might not quite have the brand recognition of its German rival but there's no denying its keen pricing. You can't get a new California for less than £64,000 whereas the Citroën costs a shade over £55,000. Pros Smooth driving experience Great value Clever pull-out kitchen unit Cons Uncomfortable fold-out bed Doesn't feel as upmarket as rivals No ladder for roof bed California dreamin' Those figures don't tell the whole story, because there's only one model of Holidays and it is pretty well equipped. To get a California to the same specification, you'd need to upgrade from the entry-level Beach to the Coast model at £70,681. Even then, you wouldn't get the satnav, heated front seats and steering wheel or the adaptive cruise control that are standard with the Holidays. That makes it feel even more like good value. So where's the catch? If you're not image-conscious, there's a lot to like. It starts in the front. The Holidays is based on the latest version of Stellantis 's ubiquitous panel van (in Citroën form, it's called the Dispatch) and, as a result, it has the dashboard upgrades that were part of the latest facelift. These are modest in their scope, but help to make the Holidays' front seats a pleasant place to be. Sure, the plastics are quite hard and scratchy, but the design isn't awful, while the presence of a physical climate control panel means you don't have to fiddle around with the touchscreen to adjust the temperature. Going the distance The 2.0-litre diesel engine is mostly quiet, the ride is smooth by commercial vehicle standards, while the steering is direct and the Holidays stays composed and unruffled in most bends. Once you're settled into the large front armchairs and with the adaptive cruise control set, it's a great motorway mile muncher. When you reach your destination, you'll want to raise the top first. However this is a fiddly process that involves undoing a number of poppers, catches and straps – the California can be had with an electro-hydraulic pop-up top, which is simpler to operate. But once the top is lifted, it creates a huge amount of extra headroom and the mesh windows allow additional ventilation. That's important, because the habitation area's side windows don't open and there are no fly screens on the doors, which means in warmer temperatures you may face the choice between sweating and an insect invasion. (Having said that, aftermarket fly screens won't exactly break the bank.) Within the roof, there's a separate fold-down platform for sleeping. It's a shame there's no ladder for this, so you have to clamber on the front seats to gain access; children will need to be lifted aboard. On the plus side, when lowering the roof, the sewn-in webbing ensures the fabric section collapses within the hard shell, rather than poking out – as it was prone to in the old Ford Transit Custom Nugget. This annoying trait meant you'd have to push bits of fabric back into the roof shell, but that's never an issue with the Holidays. Interior layout The Holidays is pretty well equipped, with a cool box, a two-burner gas hob, electric and diesel heating, a three-pin 240V socket, two USB sockets, several different lighting options and a hot-water system. Along the side of the habitation area runs a row of cupboards and an off-the-peg kitchen unit, which doesn't feel quite as plush as the ones in the California or the Transit Custom Nugget, but it serves the purpose, while the faux light wood finish brightens the interior nicely. There's a reasonable amount of storage, but not much in the way of large cupboard or hanging space. The clean- and grey-water tanks are simple plastic containers within the kitchen unit, rather than integrated into the van, which eats further into the available storage space. On the plus side, this means you can fill and empty them easily, without having to move the van to a service point. There isn't a touchscreen central controller such as you find in the California – instead, there are generic control panels for the electrics, water and heating. This may look far less swanky but, given the VW's touchscreen set-up can be slow, glitchy and occasionally unreliable, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Bed time The bench seat converts into a (rather hard and narrow) double bed which, in addition to the (much more comfortable) sleep platform in the roof, means the Holidays will sleep four at a push. You'll have to know each other very well, though; it will soon start to feel cramped with four aboard, especially with the fold-up table in place. The front seats swivel around to serve as armchairs, too, although their proximity to the doors means you have to set the backrests almost upright to allow them clearance to turn, which is a bit of a faff, while they end up quite far away from the table. With two aboard, the Holidays makes much more sense – the 'loft apartment' can be used for sleeping, with the seats and table left in situ. There isn't an integrated picnic table or chairs, but one neat feature is that the sink and cooker section of the kitchen unit (as well as the folding table, which attaches to it) can be removed and positioned outside, allowing al fresco cooking and dining. The Telegraph verdict The Holidays feels more like an aftermarket conversion rather than a camper that came straight from the factory. But that doesn't really matter too much; this is still an effective, useful camper that's good to drive, well equipped and tremendous value. Yes, it has its flaws. But given that you can buy a brand new Holidays with a three-year warranty for the same price as a three-year-old VW California with none, they are flaws you could easily live with, especially if there are only two occupants. So, perhaps the Citroën lacks the coolness of the VW but, whether you're tucked up inside or enjoying its extra equipment en route, you probably won't care. The facts On test: Citroën Holidays 2.0 BlueHDi Max Body style: campervan On sale: now How much? £55,285 on the road How fast? 115mph, 0-62mph in 10.6sec How economical? 39.2mpg (WLTP Combined) Engine & gearbox: 1,997cc four-cylinder diesel, eight-speed automatic gearbox, front-wheel drive Maximum power/torque: 174bhp/295lb ft CO2 emissions: 191g/km (WLTP Combined) VED: £360/year Warranty: 3 years / 60,000 miles Spare wheel as standard: no (optional extra) The rivals Volkswagen California 2.0 TDI Coast 148bhp, 40.9mpg, £70,681 on the road The archetypal manufacturer camper conversion and probably still the best, combining a premium feel with lots of clever equipment and a car-like driving experience. It isn't cheap, but you can see where your money goes. That said, the Holidays is almost as good, for considerably less outlay – and its extra power makes it feel more relaxed at higher speeds. Ford Transit Custom Nugget 2.0 EcoBlue FWD Titanium Auto 168bhp, 32.5mpg, £84,912 on the road We've yet to try Ford's new-generation Nugget, but it looks to be a high-end conversion with all the equipment the VW California has. The interior layout is very similar to the old model's, which means a spacious kitchen area, a useful dinette and a wider, lower bed than in the Holidays. But the Nugget is a costly choice.

Chevrolet made its presence felt at the first MLB game at Bristol Motor Speedway, showcasing race cars, EV buzz, and big branding moments on and off the field. The second-generation Palisade was recently announced, and it will debut in showrooms before the end of this year, but the current 2025 model is still a tremendously good value, and Hyundai is offering a great lease deal in August. A 2026 Genesis GV70 lease deal comes despite its notable revisions The 2026 Genesis GV70, remains what it's always been: an incredibly well-rounded compact luxury SUV at a price that undercuts much of its competition while delivering as much or more of their goodness. This year, we see some of the usual updates to the grille, lights, and wheels. Inside, there's a much bigger change: a new 27-inch display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Power comes from a 300-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or a 375-hp twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. Add in Genesis' latest lease deal, and it's easy to be tempted to make a trip to your local Genesis store. 0:03 / 0:09 VW will introduce a sub-$20,000 EV, but probably not here Watch More Source: Genesis The 2026 Genesis GV70 lease deal, August 2025 Having received a host of tweaks for 2026, Genesis offers a competitive lease deal. If you reside in Southern California, Florida, the Mid-Atlantic, or the Northeast, a 2.5T model will cost $519 per month for 36 months and 30,000 miles, with a $4,999 due at lease signing. The offer doesn't include any dealer contribution, so the price could be lower. Price doesn't include options, registration, tax, title or license and is based on an MSRP of $49,480. In addition, Genesis is offering $1,000 towards the lease of any GV70 sitting on dealer lots. The same deal is available in the Pacific Northwest, Dallas, and the Midwest, but the monthly payment is slightly higher, at $549. No security deposit is required. A $400 disposition fee is charged at lease end in most states. This lease offer ends September 2, 2025. Prefer $0 Down? Of course, not everyone has thousands lying around for a lease deposit. Payments will be higher. For those in Southern California, Florida, the Mid-Atlantic, or the Northeast, the monthly cost will be $643. In the Pacific Northwest, Dallas, and the Midwest, the monthly tab will be higher, at $663. Again, any dealer contribution could reduce your cost. Keep in mind that, when leasing, consider the monthly payment cost, taxes, and fees before signing. Lease offers vary by metro market. Check your local pricing here: Source: Genesis Final thoughts The 2026 Genesis GV70 plays in one of the most competitive segments in the U.S. market. It competes against some formidable heavy hitters, such as the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. And while this lease most likely undercuts those of its German rivals, for some, the slight premium to opt for them. For others, the Genesis will suit just fine, as it proves to be a worthy contender among compact luxury SUVs.
