The Hindu2 days ago

A Delhi court on Monday (June 9, 2025) permitted Tahawwur Rana, the alleged mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, to make a one-time phone call to his family.
Special Judge Chander Jit Singh of Patiala House Court ordered that the call will be conducted in under the supervision of a senior Tihar jail official. Rana has been asked to strictly adhere to jail rules.
The Tihar jail authorities have also been asked to submit a fresh report on Rana's health within 10 days from Monday (June 9, 2025). The jail authorities will also file a report clarifying their stand on whether Rana should be allowed regular phone calls.
Extradited by the United States to India on April 10, 64-year-old Rana is now facing trial in the case 17 years after the attacks that killed more than 166 people in 2008.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA), probing the case, had charged him for the terror attack conspiracy with his friend David Headley, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) mastermind who carried out the planning and reconnaissance operations for the Mumbai attacks at the behest of LeT chief Hafiz Saeed.
The central agency says that Rana was involved in the planning of the Mumbai attacks, assisting Headley in procuring a visa and creating a false identity so he could travel to India. He has been charged with criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government of India, murder, forgery and under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Mansa court refuses to block screening of documentary on Moose Wala by foreign broadcaster

A district court of Mansa on Tuesday refused to issue any order to block the screening of a documentary on the slain Punjabi rapper Shubhdeep Singh alias Sidhu Moose Wala by a foreign broadcaster. The documentary is scheduled to be screened at an event in Mumbai on June 11, a date that coincides with the singer's birth anniversary. In the civil suit, Moose Wala's father, Balkaur Singh has named Ishleen Kaur, Ankur Jain and foreign broadcaster as the respondents. Hearing a civil suit, the civil judge (senior division) Rajinder Singh Nagpal refrained from issuing any direction on an application seeking to stop the screening of the documentary. The judicial officer will hear the matter on June 12. Balkaur's lawyer, Satinder Pal Singh, said that the petitioner pleaded for screening to be stopped as the event scheduled for June 11 could compromise the ongoing trial and infringe upon their privacy. 'The court has fixed the next date for Thursday. The documentary may be screened as the court did not accept the plea to block the screening,' Satinder Pal Singh said. Singer-turned-politician Moose Wala was shot dead on May 29, 2022, while he was travelling in a car without his official security guards of the Punjab Police at Jawaharke, adjoining his native village Musa in Mansa district. Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, who has close ties to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, claimed responsibility for Moose Wala's murder. Brar has been designated an 'individual terrorist' by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). On June 6, Balkaur filed two complaints with the Maharashtra Police to ban the screening of the documentary in Mumbai, alleging that it could be an attempt to tarnish his son's legacy. In a complaint filed with the Maharashtra DGP and Mumbai's Juhu police station, Balkaur said that the foreign broadcaster was organising a programme in Juhu on June 11 at 3 pm to screen the documentary. Balkaur's lawyer said they have not received any reply from the Maharashtra police authorities about any action initiated on the complaints filed last week. Balkaur sought a ban on the documentary, citing that documentary makers used the name, image, and life story of the slain singer without the family's consent or permission. It was also claimed that invitations were sent to people, who had some unknown facts about the Punjabi singer that had not been published or revealed anywhere and would be shown in the documentary. Balkaur also alleged that the documentary may be an attempt to spoil his son's legacy.

Delhi HC rejects bail plea of Vedpal Singh Tanwar in PMLA case linked to illegal mining in Haryana

The Delhi high court on Monday rejected the interim and regular bail pleas of Vedpal Singh Tanwar in a money laundering case. He is an accused in a case linked to illegal sand and stone mining in the Dadam area of Bhiwani, Haryana. The high court dismissed the bail plea in view of the material placed on record by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Justice Girish Kathpalia dismissed the bail plea after hearing the submissions of the ED and material placed on record. Justice Kathpalia said, 'I am unable to satisfy myself that there is any reasonable ground for believing that the accused/applicant is not guilty of the offences alleged. That being so, the rigours of Section 45 of the PML Act dissuade this court from admitting the accused/applicant to bail on merits.' After perusing the medical status report of May 2, 2025, which compiled medical reports of hospitals including AIIMS, the bench rejected the interim bail plea to Tanwar. 'According to the said medical status report, the accused applicant is stable and regularly reviewed by the doctor on duty, and all medicines prescribed by AIIMS are being provided to him from the jail dispensary itself. So, on that count also, the accused/applicant has failed to establish a ground for grant of bail,' Justice Kathpalia said in the order passed on June 9. While rejecting the bail pleas, the high court said that there was a huge loss of ₹78 crore to the government exchequer. The court noted that the documentary record reflected the unlawful gain to the accused persons, including Tanwar, and the unlawful loss to the exchequer to the time of ₹78,14,75,324. Tanwar has moved a plea through advocate Sumer Singh Boparai and Aman Sharma. ED had arrested Vedpal Singh Tanwar under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, on May 30, 2024, in connection with illegal mining in the Dadam area of Haryana. As per ED, it initiated an investigation on the basis of the prosecution complaint filed by the regional officer, Haryana State Pollution Control Board, Bhiwani, before the Special Environment Court, Kurukshetra, against the Firm M/s. Govardhan Mines and Minerals for violating the conditions of Environment Clearance under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and subsequently, an FIR was registered by Haryana Police under various sections of IPC, 1860. ED said that the investigation revealed that the firm had been involved in large-scale illegal and unscientific mining in the Dadam area of Haryana. It had led to large-scale damage to the environment and a huge loss to the exchequer. It is worth mentioning here that rampant illegal mining in the area led to the killing of five persons due to landslides, ED said in a press note.
