A Delhi court on Monday (June 9, 2025) permitted Tahawwur Rana, the alleged mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, to make a one-time phone call to his family.
Special Judge Chander Jit Singh of Patiala House Court ordered that the call will be conducted in under the supervision of a senior Tihar jail official. Rana has been asked to strictly adhere to jail rules.
The Tihar jail authorities have also been asked to submit a fresh report on Rana's health within 10 days from Monday (June 9, 2025). The jail authorities will also file a report clarifying their stand on whether Rana should be allowed regular phone calls.
Extradited by the United States to India on April 10, 64-year-old Rana is now facing trial in the case 17 years after the attacks that killed more than 166 people in 2008.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA), probing the case, had charged him for the terror attack conspiracy with his friend David Headley, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) mastermind who carried out the planning and reconnaissance operations for the Mumbai attacks at the behest of LeT chief Hafiz Saeed.
The central agency says that Rana was involved in the planning of the Mumbai attacks, assisting Headley in procuring a visa and creating a false identity so he could travel to India. He has been charged with criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government of India, murder, forgery and under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

China adds another name to its 10-day visa-free transit list of 55 countries; India remains excluded

China has now included Indonesia in its 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit programme. Now, the total number of eligible countries is 55. However, India is still not on this list. According to China's National Immigration Administration (NIA), travellers from 55 countries, such as the UK, US, Japan, France, Australia and UAE. They can already use the 72 or 144-hour visa-free transit facilities at 31 ports in 23 cities. From June 12, 2025, eligible Indonesian travellers can enter China through any of 60 ports in 24 regions. They can stay for up to 10 days without a visa, as long as they are en route to a third country. According to the NIA, this move strengthens ties between China and ASEAN countries and supports regional cooperation. Many Indian travellers, however, continue to wait for similar ease of entry as India remains excluded from the current visa-free list. "With deepening exchanges between China, Indonesia, and other ASEAN members, China's visa-free policy is gradually evolving into a broader regional initiative," Ge Hongliang, vice dean of the ASEAN College at Guangxi Minzu University, told the Global Times. NIA has said that it will keep improving immigration rules to make it easier for foreigners to enter, study, work and live in the country. The transit visa policy is expanding, allowing more people to visit China. 'This also clearly reflects China's commitment to opening up and boosting international exchanges," Ge said. India and China continue to have a rocky relationship due to border issues and political rivalry. The main reason is the Line of Actual Control (LAC) dispute in the Himalayas. Geopolitically, China does not enjoy India's bond with countries like the US, Japan and Australia. In turn, India's major concern is China and Pakistan's 'all-weather friendship'. China continues to provide Pakistan with economic help and weapons. It also gives Pakistan advanced arms, like fighter jets and missiles, adding to India's security concerns. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, which India sees as a violation of its sovereignty.

Karnataka HC refuses to quash POCSO case against faculty of research centre

BENGALURU: Refusing to quash proceedings against a faculty of the central premier research institute in the city who has been booked under the provisions of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act for his alleged sexual assault on a 10-year-old girl, the Karnataka High Court directed the special court to conclude the trial within three months since considerable time has been passed after the incident. 'The allegation is that the daughter of the complainant was playing and the petitioner, an Assistant Professor, was standing behind the window screen. After some time, the petitioner comes and touches the hips and further touched the private parts of the daughter with the clothes on. This is one statement. The other statements are identical in that the petitioner has touched them in the same manner that he has touched the daughter of the de facto complainant... The law is well settled that even one credible statement - if sufficient - can call for a trial,', said Justice M Nagaprasanna while rejecting the petition filed by the accused faculty. According to the complaint dated September 30, 2018, the accused is an Assistant Professor. When his nine-year-old daughter wanted to celebrate her birthday, all the neighbouring apartment residents near the research institute were invited.

NEW DELHI: A record keeper (ahlmad) posted at Rouse Avenue Court, accused of accepting bribes from undertrials to secure bail, has withdrawn his anticipatory bail plea from the Delhi High Court. Mukesh Kumar, who is under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), withdrew his plea on Wednesday, the day arguments were scheduled. Justice Tejas Karia allowed the withdrawal, granting liberty to file a fresh plea in the future. Appearing for Kumar, Advocate Ayush Jain requested the Court to direct the ACB to issue proper notice under Section 41 of the Criminal Procedure Code before requiring the accused to join the investigation. He also sought permission for an advocate to be present during Kumar's statement. The ACB, represented by Additional Standing Counsel Sanjeev Bhandari, assured the Court that all legal procedures would be followed. The bail withdrawal comes amidst growing scrutiny.
