Delhi University under fire for asking only Kashmiri students for personal details; JKSA calls move discriminatory, seeks Centre's intervention

Time of India07-05-2025

NEW DELHI: A Delhi University (DU) directive asking students from Jammu and Kashmir to submit personal details has triggered a sharp reaction from the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), which has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking withdrawal of the "discriminatory" circular. The University, however, has defended the move, citing student safety and a request from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) based on intelligence inputs.Responding to the criticism, DU Proctor Rajni Abbi told PTI that the directive was issued "for the better safety and security of the students from Jammu and Kashmir," noting that there have been instances where Kashmiri students were harassed or assaulted in some parts of the country. She added that the Delhi Police had sought the data and that the circular followed a request from the MHA based on intelligence inputs related to student safety. The circular comes amid the backdrop of a terror attack in south Kashmir's Pahalgam town that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, on April 22.Following the attack, J&K students and professionals residing in places outside the Union Territory reported instances of harassment and assault. In a letter dated May 6, the JKSA alleged that several DU colleges have asked J&K students to provide their addresses, contact numbers, email IDs, and course details - requirements not imposed on students from any other state or Union Territory. The association described the move as " community profiling " and a violation of fundamental rights."The information is being sought only from Kashmiri students, raising serious concerns of targeted surveillance," the JKSA said in the letter addressed to the Home Minister. "This unjustified surveillance creates an atmosphere of fear and exclusion, rather than integration and belonging."The association warned that such measures risk alienating students from J&K and may hinder their academic experience. "At a time when students should feel supported in their academic pursuits, they are instead gripped by fear and uncertainty," it said. The JKSA also questioned the need for collecting such data, arguing that student details are already available with the university from the admission process.Calling for Shah's intervention, the JKSA urged the Centre to issue clear guidelines to educational institutions to avoid any form of regional or religious profiling."We believe that your timely intervention can restore faith among Kashmiri students in the institutions meant to protect and nurture them," the letter stated.

Union ministers hail Modi, highlight key achievements

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday lauded the 11 years of Modi government as a "golden period" in public service while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh asserted that India stands well-equipped and unwavering in its resolve to safeguard its territorial integrity, as Union ministers praised the prime minister's leadership. The Cabinet colleagues of PM Modi and other senior leaders of the ruling NDA listed a number of measures of the government. Lok Janshakti Party leader and Union minister Chirag Paswan said on X that the country has seen a new era of economic rejuvenation, social justice, cultural pride and national security. Senior BJP leader and Union minister Nitin Gadkari said under Modi's "visionary leadership", India has undergone a historic transformation grounded in seva (service), good governance, and inclusive development. "From empowering women, youth, and farmers to modernising infrastructure and healthcare, Bharat's progress has been swift and far-reaching. With global leadership, a self-reliant economy, and a people-first approach, India stands tall on the world stage," he said. The ministers used the hashtag "11 years of seva" in social media posts to mark the 11 years of the Modi-led government in power. Shah said when Modi took over the reins of the country in 2014, there was policy paralysis in the country. He said there were no policies, no leadership, and scams were at their peak in the government, the economy was in shambles and the governance system was directionless. "The historic 11 years of the Modi Government have been a golden period of resolve, endeavour and dedication towards public service," he said. The Defence Minister said the defence sector under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative has moved firmly towards self-reliance, and India now stands proudly among the top five economies of the world. India today stands well-equipped, confident, and unwavering in its resolve to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs, he added. The ministers highlighted the reach and impact of welfare schemes like 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' for sanitation, 'Ayushman Bharat' for health insurance, and 'Ujjwala Yojana' for cooking gas, besides measures for housing for the poor, cash assistance to farmers and subsidised loan schemes without collateral for entrepreneurs.

Left Parties Write To PM Opposing Anti-Maoist Operation In Chhattisgarh

Kolkata: Five Left parties have written a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, opposing the encounter killings of Maoist leaders in 'Operation Kagar' being carried out in the Chhattisgarh region. In the joint letter, the five Left parties have written to the Prime Minister to put an immediate halt to the "extra-judicial" killings in the region around Chhattisgarh in the name of Operation Kagar. "There are several reports that several senior Maoist leaders are currently in the custody of the security forces. We demand that they should all be produced in court and dealt with as per the rule of law," the letter said. In the letter, the five Left parties have argued that the normal lives of the tribal people in the region have been completely disrupted following the action by the security forces there. "The Adivasi rights enshrined in the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution are being systematically violated and the forest and minerals of Chhattisgarh are being subjected to indiscriminate corporate exploitation with disastrous implications for environmental safety and livelihood of the local people. We urge upon you to stop this militaristic approach that treats the Adivasis with unmitigated hostility," the letter added. In the letter, the Union government has also been accused of not handing over the bodies of those killed in the encounters to their families and thus being denied a dignified farewell. "The Maoists have repeatedly urged the government to consider their appeal for dialogue. Unfortunately, the Union government and the BJP-led Chhattisgarh government have chosen not to pursue a solution through talks. Instead they are following an inhuman policy of killings and annihilation," the letter said. According to the Left parties, the recent statements by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah too made it evident that the Union government was not ready to pursue a solution through talks.

TN remains an enigma for the saffron lobby

As NDA 3.0 completes its first anniversary today, the perennially in election mode apparatus of the alliance must already be working overtime for the slate for the later part of the year. Bihar, one of the states readying for the Assembly elections, is slowly but surely seeing changes, ostensibly in favour of an overwhelming saffron win at present. Whatever that may be, the 2026 elections must be making the war rooms of various political parties working with a different game plan as it is where the INDIA bloc sees its chances. Tamil Nadu, by this time, next year would have had a new government in place. The question is, which party will get to run the state which is now seeing aggressive posturing by NDA and counter attacks by the DMK government. Once a formal alliance was sealed by the Centre with the principal Opposition party and old ally, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the BJP must have felt relieved that it has made the first move, well. Given that the MGR-founded party is facing an identity and existential crisis in its 53rd year of existence, the cobbling together of the alliance with smaller parties being wooed establishes the fact that the saffron party is happy to ride piggyback on the Dravidian big brother this time around. Amit Shah's latest statement that the new alliance will sweep the 2026 polls has not entirely been rejected by the political pundits and as expected, pooh poohed by the DMK leaders. Its top-rung icons say that if the Dravidian ideology resonates with the people, it is nigh impossible for the BJP to set its foot in Tamil Nadu. While a few still consider the earlier elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as a 'lost opportunity' for the BJP to have made inroads into the Tamil psyche, the highly unpopular way the administration has gone about its business has made the average public take a critical look at the goings-on in the State. Dynastic politics – that of Udayanidhi being groomed to take over from the present CM, M K Stalin - is still being helplessly accepted by the party machinery and followers as a 'natural' progression of the first family in retaining power. What is not left unnoticed is the increased presence of Karunanidhi's daughter and the CM's step-sister Kanimozhi in the central scheme of things, Stalin's blow hot blow cold with Modi government and the stench of corruption in the governance of the State which has been allowed to grow (the TASMAC case, for one), for a surgical strike later by the central machinery, closer to the poll dates. It is surely a work in progress for the non-DMK formation, but it is a known fact that the DMK has till date never managed a second successive stint in office. Will they break the jinx this time or will a currently docile anti-DMK alliance spring a surprise? If it is the final chance for the AIADMK to retain its political relevance, it is also the best-ever opportunity for the BJP in nearly five decades to make its presence felt in the state's corridors of power. Whether they can make or mar will be in the hands of the Tamil electorate.
