Melbourne City women reach Asian Champions League final after last-minute winner

The Guardian21-05-2025

Melbourne City will face Wuhan Jiangda in the final of the Asian Women's Champions League on Saturday after beating Incheon Red Angels 1-0 last night.
Melbourne booked their place in the final when 17-year-old substitute Shelby McMahon struck four minutes into injury time to defeat the South Koreans.
McMahon, who had been introduced at halftime, thumped home an unstoppable right-foot drive from 25 yards into the top corner of Kim Min-jung's goal to keep alive the Australian side's title hopes.
Earlier, Wuhan Jiangda handed Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City a 2-0 defeat in the other semi-final to book their place.
China international Wang Shuang sent hosts Wuhan on their way to victory when she bent a left-foot shot around Ho Chi Minh goalkeeper Quach Thu Em in the 34th minute.
Song Duan then doubled the advantage nine minutes into the second half with a clinical strike from 25 yards out that left Thu Em motionless on her goal-line, confirming Wuhan's progress to the decider.
More details to follow.

Keeping everyone guessing! NRL superstar Nathan Cleary refuses to rule out bombshell defection to rugby

NRL superstar Nathan Cleary hasn't ruled out eventually switching footy codes, with the NSW Blues halfback declaring he has an 'open mind.' Speaking ahead of game two in Perth on June 18, the immediate focus of the four-time premiership winner is lifting the Origin shield. And for now, adoring Penrith fans can breathe easy - the 27-year-old still has goals to tick off in rugby league. 'I think I've got enough challenges in front of me,' Cleary said from the Blues' camp at Leura in the NSW Blue Mountains. 'I feel like I want to squeeze the most out of my rugby league potential as I can. 'I've put so much into it and it's been my passion for so long, so to then get to this stage where I feel like I'm probably playing my best footy and in the best position to play my best footy in the coming years, I don't want to waste that. 'Going back to Penrith and the way we started the year, that's a challenge in itself and I've found motivation in that. You can't take winning for granted. '(In saying that)'I've got a pretty open mind....(it may happen) potentially down the track, but not at the moment.' Cleary is contracted until the end of 2027 - but earlier this month Wallabies legend Tim Horan publicly stated the Penrith star was 'quite keen' to switch codes. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt also felt the playmaker may 'want to spread his wings.' And with Cleary's girlfriend - Matildas star Mary Fowler - based in England with Manchester City, rumours of a move won't go away. In Perth, Cleary will reunite with former Panthers teammate Jarome Luai in the halves for Origin II after Eels skipper Mitch Moses was ruled out due to injury. Footy legend Peter Sterling has backed Luai to perform despite a limited preparation. 'You know what you're gonna get with Jarome,' he said.

Ange Postecoglou 'is lined up by top Saudi Arabia side' - just a week after brutal Tottenham sacking

Ange Postecoglou could be set for a swift return to the dugout, according to reports The 59-year-old Australian was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur last week, 16 days after he led the club to their first silverware since 2008. Victory in Bilbao served as a glorious conclusion to what had been an otherwise disastrous campaign for the north London club. In a season in which his squad was ravaged by slew of injuries, further compounded by a congested fixture list, Spurs suffered 22 league defeats, a club record in a 38-game season. Postecoglou could now head to the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Ahli eyeing him for the managerial role, according to the Telegraph. He is being lined up as a potential successor to Matthias Jaissle, whose future at the club remains uncertain despite guiding them to the AFC Champions League title last month. Jaissle, 37, has attracted interest from Europe after leading a team packed with stars - including Ivan Toney, Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez and Edouard Mendy - to continental glory against Kawasaki Frontale. Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and several Premier League clubs are understood to be tracking him. A move to Saudi Arabia would see Postecoglou return to Asia having previously won the J1 League with Yokohama F. Marinos. Following his Tottenham exit, Postecoglou himself released a parting statement, reflecting on his two years at the club with pride. The statement read: 'When I reflect on my time as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride. 'The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. 'That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. 'We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. 'I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. 'It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. 'And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special.

Big Bash coup as Pakistan superstar Babar Azam agrees to maiden tournament in Australia

Babar Azam will join the Sydney Sixers this summer as one of the biggest signings in Big Bash League history. Generally regarded among the greatest batters of modern times, the Pakistani right-hander will be available for the entirety of his first BBL summer. Azam has signed with the Sixers under BBL rules that permit each side to sign one international player before the overseas draft is held on June 19. The 30-year-old joins the likes of Chris Gayle and Faf du Plessis in the pantheon of great international batters to have taken part in the BBL. 'We are absolutely delighted to welcome Babar to the Sixers this summer,' said Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes.'He is a world-class player and a proven leader. He's not only a huge addition to our club, but to the league as a whole.' Azam's inclusion comes after his standing in the Pakistani white-ball set-up has waned in recent times, with the veteran dropped from the T20I team last year and yet to regain his place. Still, no one has scored more Twenty20 International half-centuries than Azam's 39, and he has also played more T20Is for Pakistan -128 - than any other man. Azam remains the fastest man to reach 5000 one-day international runs, achieving the feat in 97 innings, and was the fastest to 2500 T20I runs in 62 knocks. He captained Pakistan in all three formats between 2019 and 2024, notably leading the side to the 2022 T20 World Cup final. Azam is also a mainstay of the international white-ball circuit with stints in Pakistan, the Caribbean and the United Kingdom. 'I'm very proud to be joining the Sydney Sixers for the upcoming season,' Azam said.'It's an exciting opportunity to play in one of the world's best T20 leagues and to be a part of such a successful and respected franchise.' His signing comes after fellow Pakistan superstar Shaheen Afridi confirmed this week he would nominate for the BBL draft.
