Woman shares her experience with the 4.1 magnitude earthquake in East Tennessee
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — On Saturday, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake jolted awake various parts of East Tennessee near the North Carolina border. 6 News got insight on the quake from the Tuckaleechee Caverns seismographs and spoke with a woman in Tellico Plains who felt the tremor.
Sally Teague has lived in Tellico Plains for 40 years, but says she's never experienced anything like this. Saturday morning, she and her husband were sitting at their kitchen table when they heard loud rumble. Moments later the house began to shake, knocking food off their pantry shelves.

'I have my children, and I was like, we need to grab our children, but where do we go? We don't plan for an earthquake. And so, we were like, do we go outside? Do we stay inside? Do we get the children? Do we get under the table? Like everything was going through your mind at once, and you don't know what to do. So, it was very scary,' explained Teague.And it wasn't just her house feeling the effects. Across the street, her mother-in-law's pool was making large waves. Teague also received calls from family and friends in nearby states who said they felt it too.United States Geological Survey records show the earthquake struck about 12 miles southeast of Greenback, Tennessee, around 9:04 a.m., 16 miles below Earth's surface.'Well, they come about by tectonic shift in the plates. So, when the plates break loose, it starts to just grind through, and that's how you get an earthquake. We do have really deep, ancient fault lines and we get, you know, some movement every once in a while. But that's the first one that I've ever felt,' said Benjamin Vananda a manager who tends the seismic monitor for Tuckaleechee Cavern. That exact local monitoring equipment at Tuckaleechee Cavern picked up the activity.For Teague it's an experience she won't forget.

'I mean, just the shaking, it really takes you back. You're just living it out, and just kind of everything stops, and you're just kind of in shock, and you're just in the moment and just hanging on and hoping that it rides through fast,' said TeagueThe Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) tells 6 News it is not aware of any damage to East Tennessee roadways or bridges. However, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced after the earthquake that Foothills Parkway west would be closed until inspected by the Federal Highway Administration. On Sunday, they announced that no damage was found, and it had reopened.

Should Tennesseans get flood insurance amid hurricane season?
KNOXVILLE, Tenn., (WATE) — It has been a little over eight months since remnants of Hurricane Helene devastated parts of East Tennessee, and now hurricane season is back until November. The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance is urging people to be prepared. They suggest having a plan in place if severe weather were to hit your area, and stress the importance of protecting your home with flood insurance. Between hurricanes, tornados, and earthquakes, Josh Witt with The Insurance Group said now is a good time look into protecting your home. Tellico Plains families fighting to regain full access to historic cemetery 'Especially as weather patterns are changing, we're starting to see like Tornado Alley used to be through Oklahoma and Texas, It's shifted almost actually in Middle Tennessee, Middle and West Tennessee,' said Witt. 'So as weather patterns shift, rain starts happening more. We saw with Hurricane Helene, that was all flood insurance and it's just not covered by homeowner's policy.' He said both flood and earthquake insurance is not covered by general home insurance but nearly everyone in Knoxville and the greater East Tennessee area should have it. 'There are tons of floodplains around Knoxville, obviously, with all the lakes and rivers that we have. And one of the one of the big misconceptions is just because I'm not in a floodplain doesn't that doesn't mean you don't need flood insurance. As a matter of fact, 40% of flood claims actually occur outside of high-risk floodplains,' said Witt. He said if you live in a floodplain, you're probably already paying for flood insurance as part of your mortgage. If you're not, it could pay off to invest in your home. Locals, tourists recall major Gatlinburg crash that injured seven 'Your average subdivision, it can happen. The people who went through, unfortunately, Hurricane Helene, they were not in floodplains for the most part,' said Witt. 'That ended up being quite the problem for them, and there'll be some disaster recovery that can help, but there's no substitute for actual flood insurance.' While the probability of your home being impacted by natural disasters are low, he said it is important to have. 'If you don't have flood insurance, or you don't have earthquake insurance, sinkhole is another big coverage in East Tennessee that if you don't have it, you need to add it,' said Witt. 'Most of the time, it's not expensive. Nobody wants to look at it. I get it, we all want to keep costs down. But you don't want to be sitting in the situation of not having that coverage when you actually need it.' ▶ See more top stories on Witt added If you do plan to buy flood insurance sometime soon, most plans do not kick in for up to 30 days after buying it, unless you are currently in the process of buying a home. Railroad repair prompts closure of part of W. Baddour Pkwy
Portions of West Baddour Parkway will be closed over the weekend for crews to conduct railroad repairs. The Tennessee Department of Transportation says the RJ Corman Railroad Company will close West Baddour Pkwy to through traffic at the railroad crossing behind Tractor Supply for the repairs. All businesses and residents will still have access during construction, but regular through traffic will be detoured to West Main Street. TDOT says the work is weather-dependent, as there are chances of showers and thunderstorms in Wilson County over the weekend. The Move Over Law, passed in 2006, was referenced by TDOT when reminding drivers to slow down and move over when traveling through a work zone. Violation can result in up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of up to $500. The closure is in effect from Friday, May 30, at 8 p.m. through Monday, June 2, at 5 a.m.

Sweetwater residents supporting each other after tornado in Loudon County
SWEETWATER, Tenn. (WATE) — An EF0 tornado moved through Loudon County Friday morning, damaging multiple structures and injuring five people. Most of the damage was found off Holt Road near the border of both Loudon and Monroe Counties. In a matter of moments everything changed for this community. Richard L. Bean to retire after mayor calls out problems at juvenile detention center 'Just total shock, because there was no warning like it hit so fast and it was over so fast, I've never been through something like this,' said Leslie Guilford. Guilford said the tornado was like nothing she had ever experienced before. 'We came running outside and there's a camper next door, and it had flipped over four times, and there were people trapped inside, so we ran down there in the rain to help try to make sure they were okay,' she said. 'We had the neighbors call 911 and then everybody started showing up to help and assess all the damage.' Four people were in the camper that flipped over, in talking to their family 6 News learned despite some minor injuries, they were doing okay. However, like many other residents, they weren't the only ones who were home when it happened. 'It was early this morning, and I think it was around 8:30, It just got really loud and the ceiling started creaking and all that other stuff,' said Craig Brackett. 'Next thing I know, I'm getting a call as a responder for the camper that had rolled over and I knew exactly, it was on our property.' National Weather Service surveying damage in Loudon County Brackett works as a first responder and also co-owns Grain Bin Commodities off Holt Road. He said multiple parts of his property were damaged, including two Airbnb's and two barns, one of which they use for events like 'Fall at the Farm.' 'It's all about people, the buildings are replaceable and we've got a lot of buildings to replace, but that's okay. The people are okay, that's what matters,' said Brackett. He said now that they know everyone off the road is safe, they will help each other rebuild. 'We have some of the best neighbors, they've been so supportive through everything, and they were the first ones down here right after it happened,' said Guilford. 'So we're thankful for Callie and Craig and all the other neighbors that have come by.' Five injured after EF-0 tornado in Loudon County When the tornado came through, Brackett's business was used as a post for first responders, the National Weather Service, the Red Cross, and as a place for the people displaced.
