Twelve South just made its editor-approved AirFly adapter an even better travel companion
Today, Twelve South is debuting the latest version of its beloved travel companion. The new AirFly Pro 2 takes everything our editors have loved about the company's previous Bluetooth audio transmitters and adds some quality of life improvements to elevate the experience. I've been using the new piece of travel gear for the past few weeks and can finally share my experience after going hands-on with this handy accessory.
Twelve South AirFly Pro 2
Twelve South's new audio adapter improves the accessory that many of our editors never fly without. The AirFly Pro 2 has refreshed buttons, higher-end Bluetooth audio support and other improvements so you can use your own AirPods or headphones with an in-flight screen. Twelve South first teased the new AirFly Pro 2 back in January as part of as part of CNN Underscored's The Watch List. Quite a few of the new products that made the list to start the year have been hitting store shelves in the past few weeks, but it has really been Twelve South's latest gadget that I've been most looking forward to. And now that wait is over! I can finally share my thoughts on the new audio adapter.
I've been using the new AirFly Pro 2 for the past few weeks. At the end of February, I flew down to Charleston, South Carolina for a much-needed reprieve from New York City and its frigid winter weather. On top of just soaking up the sun and enjoying a few of the local restaurants, I managed to sneak in some time with the folks at Twelve South and get my hands on one of the new audio adapters. It came in use right on the flight home, where I got to try out all of the improvements.
This may be the newest edition of the company's Bluetooth wireless transmitter, but it largely remains the same as before. AirFly Pro 2 is still a best-in-class option for using your own earbuds or headphones with an airline's seat-mounted entertainment system. It also excels at playing music over an older car's stereo system that may lack native Bluetooth features or plugging into gym equipment to follow along on a guided workout session. There are some very notable upgrades over the previous releases, but after my time with the accessory, I have to say that it's just as good as the legacy set by its predecessors.
What justifies the '2' in its naming scheme isn't a single feature or massive redesign. Instead, it's a bundle of quality of life improvements that take Twelve South's existing adapters up to a new level. The most notable adjustment of these have to be the newfound buttons that allows you to be far more intentional when using the adapter.
Twelve South has clearly listened to feedback here. The AirFly Pro 2 borrows something from the pages of the more recent SE version of the AirFly. When the company launched its new budget-friendly audio adapter, it included refreshed physical volume buttons that made it easier to bypass the airline's clunky touchscreen displays when you need to mute playback to hear a flight attendant. That same design is now being brought to the pro end of the lineup with today's launch.
Speaking of new physical controls, there's also dedicated Bluetooth pairing buttons on each side. The original Pro adapter came with support for Multipoint Bluetooth, and now Twelve South is making it even easier to connect with two pairs of earbuds at once. Gone are the days of trying to sync up movies with your airplane seat mate by hitting play right at the same time. Instead, this Bluetooth transmitter can connect right to both pairs of headphones at once. And now, it does a better job of accomplishing that task.
On the left side, you'll find a devoted button for pairing the first listening device. While on the other side, there's a second toggle for pairing a second set of headphones. It's such a useful improvement over the previous way Twelve South was doing it before, which was a single button that completely cleared paired devices. Now, the process of switching between your true wireless earbuds or over-ear headphones is far simpler, as is dropping one of those devices' connections to add your significant other's earbuds into the mix.
The final new button is a refreshed power switch, which makes the accessory's 25 hours of usage on a single charge even more reliable. Before, you'd just have to hold down one of the buttons to turn it on or off, but that meant jostling the contents of your bag could accidentally turn on the adapter. The AirFly Pro 2 solves that potential mishap with a slider that locks into either on or off positions. It's also so useful for checking if it's on at a quick glance, instead of having to rely on a small LED status indicator.
Twelve South is also upgrading the accessory's Bluetooth features. The original version of the AirFly Pro included Bluetooth 5.0 support, and now that is being upgraded to Bluetooth 5.3. This isn't just a version number tweak for the sake of change, either! The newer wireless protocol offers higher-end audio support so your movies sound even better. The company notes that the changes are so apparent, that you can easily hear the improvements compared to the original. I don't have the first AirFly Pro, but I do have the SE model, and the AirFly Pro 2 certainly does outclass its more affordable counterpart.
The newest version of the audio transmitter also includes Qualcomm's Echo Cancelling and Noise Suppression tech to give your headphones a little extra boost cutting through the drone of an airplane's engine. Apple including active noise cancellation in AirPods for the first time was one of the final pieces of motivation needed for Twelve South to begin shipping the AirFly originally, and so it's wonderful to see the company keep improving on that original use case: To use active noise cancelling headphones with in-flight entertainment.
Some things about the Twelve South AirFly Pro 2 are not being changed. And for good reason! Certainly fitting into the mantra of if it isn't broken, there's no need to fix it, the audio adapter still supports receiving audio on top of just sending it. This is particularly useful for plugging into a car stereo so you can sending audio from a smartphone, but there are sure to be other use cases for the bi-directional audio feature. USB-C charging also remains, as does the ability to use the accessory while it refuels.
At $60, the Twelve South AirFly Pro 2 might just be one of the most value-packed travel accessories on the market. If you're putting the finishing touches on your spring or summer travel plans and will be spending any amount of time in the air, I'd recommend picking one of these up. Unless you're someone who brings an iPad filled with tons of movies and TV shows, it's pretty likely you'll be putting the airplane's seat-mounted entertainment system to use. This accessory ensures you can ditch the corded buds flight attendants hand out and actually take advantage of the earbuds you already own.
Outside of using while you travel, I also love that the AirFly Pro 2 has so many uses on a day to day basis. I don't drive these days, being the city-dweller that I am. But before I moved to the city, I relied on an AirFly to play music from my iPhone. These days, I still use an AirFly with the old school iPod nano I've written about using before. Apple wasn't including Bluetooth with its music players back in the early 2000s, but Twelve South agrees with me that I should still be able to use my AirPods with — even if it's a bit of a roundabout solution.
Sure, there is a $5 increase from the original AirFly Pro, but there are so many adjustments to justify the change in my book. And if you don't need all of the enhancements for the second generation version, you can just save some cash on the original.
The AirFly Pro 2 joins a collection of other Twelve South audio adapters. Here's how the newest version compares to the three other models in the current lineup.
Twelve South AirFly Pro
This is the previous generation version of the AirFly Pro. It packs the same 25 hours of usage as its newer counterpart alongside the ability to transmit and receive wireless audio.
Twelve South AirFly SE
Ditch two-way audio and Multipoint Bluetooth for an even more affordable way to use your AirPods on a flight. This SE version is the most affordable of the lineup and on sale at Amazon.
Twelve South AirFly Pro Deluxe
The Deluxe edition of the AirFly Pro features the same audio adapter, just bundled with some extra accessories. Packed into the bonus travel case, you'll also find an international headphone adapter. I've personally been reviewing tech for years. My job title here at Underscored may be senior deals editor but I have been in the consumer electronics world for nearly a decade. Through almost that entire tenure, Twelve South has won me over time and time again with its inventive and useful gadgets. That's very much the case here with its newest release.
So, when you take a recommendation from Underscored, you can rest assured you're getting sound advice from editors like myself who personally use the gear we test. And in the case of accessories from Twelve South, I find myself still using them long after I've written about them.

Apple's latest AirPods Pro with USB-C just received a $70 discount
This year's WWDC kicks off in less than a week, which means Apple is likely to announce a string of software changes in short order, some of which are designed to improve Apple's latest pair of premium earbuds. Thankfully, if you haven't yet pulled the trigger on the second-gen AirPods Pro, they're once again on sale at Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy for around $169 ($70 off), matching their best price of the year. If you're an iPhone user, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better pair of noise-canceling earbuds than Apple's latest AirPods Pro with USB-C. The second-gen model ratchets up the noise cancellation and sound quality, providing dynamic, rich sound and ANC that can go toe-to-toe with Sony's XM5 and other like-minded rivals. Unlike the cheaper AirPods 4 with ANC, they also feature convenient swipe-based controls and four sets of silicone tips, whereas Apple's entry-level earbuds still rely on an open-style design that allows more ambient noise in. As for why they're the perfect fit for iPhone users, well, that's easy. The Pro are chock-full of Apple-only features, including head tracking spatial audio, robust Find My support, and automatic device switching. The included speaker-equipped charging case also features a U1 chip for more accurate tracking, and thanks to a software update in the fall, Apple's high-end earbuds can now protect your hearing and serve as clinical-grade hearing aids. That makes them well-suited for those with mild to moderate hearing loss — or your next Turnstile concert. Other ways to save this weekend It's by no means a necessity, but I've been ogling the Vestaboard Note ever since the spendy split-flap display went up for sale last month. The nostalgic 24.5-inch board is currently available for preorder from Vestaboard ahead of its December launch starting at $899 ($400 off), and while it only features 45 split-flap mechanisms (as opposed to 132 on the original), it still looks like a delightful way to showcase any message, pattern, or image you create using the accompanying web interface or mobile app. Ugreen's FineTrack Smart Finder is available for just $9.99 (about $7 off) from Amazon and Ugreen right now, which is the best price we've seen on the inexpensive location tracker. Sure, it's not quite as capable as an AirTag, but it still comes with a two-year replaceable battery, a built-in ringer, and the ability to tap into Apple's extensive Find My network as necessary. Hell, it even comes with a lanyard hole, which isn't something we can say about Apple's tracker. Meta's entry-level VR headset, the Meta Quest 3S, is on sale once again at Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy, where you can pick it up with a copy of Batman: Arkham Shadow and a three-month trial of Meta Horizon Plus for an all-time low of around $269 ($30 off). It's sort of the middle child in terms of Meta's headset lineup, as it features the same chipset as the Quest 3 but remains reliant on the same lenses and field of view as the Quest 2. Still, it can play most of the same standalone games as the former, as well as PC-based virtual reality titles if you own a gaming PC. Read our review.

Here's How AirTags Compare To Other Trackers
If you haven't purchased a Bluetooth tracker yet, there are plenty of reasons to do so. With the help of one of these gadgets, you can easily find your phone, keys or wallet and save yourself a headache if you're prone to losing them. You can keep track of your luggage while you're traveling. You can attach a tracker to your pet's collar to make sure you always know where they are. Simply put, Bluetooth trackers can be one of those inventions you didn't know you needed until you bought it. But which one is best? You've probably heard the most about Apple's AirTags, which are reader-beloved. But they're not the only ones on the market, and they aren't compatible with non-Apple devices. Below, we broke down some of the best Bluetooth trackers and what makes each of them stand out, so you can choose the best option for your needs. To create our list, we only considered options with a minimum 4-star rating on Amazon, which eliminated products like the Chipolo Pop and Pebblebee Clip. The undefeated Apple AirTag for Apple users Highlights: Works with Apple's Find My network, ultra-slim and small design, most precise location tracking, water- and dust-resistant with IP67 ratingDrawbacks: Doesn't work with Android devicesThe AirTag was crowned one of the best Bluetooth trackers by Wirecutter, and for good reason. The AirTag's ultra-wideband technology is extremely accurate for helping you find lost items. (Note that it won't work on iPhone 6s or earlier models, but devices of this age are also no longer supported by Apple.) The AirTag setup is also ridiculously easy, as it uses the Find My network — so if you have an Apple device, you don't even need to download a separate app. You can put the AirTag into Lost Mode so that you get a notification when it's detected in Find My, and the AirTag also has a built-in speaker so it can play sounds when you're looking for it.(Yes, AirTag batteries can be replaced, but there are reports that certain bitterant coatings can cause incompatibility. While Apple specifically suggests using a Duracell 2032 lithium battery with bitterant coating, anecdotal online evidence suggests that even this Apple-recommended battery doesn't work. The brand also advises looking for batteries that clearly advertise compatibility with AirTags.)Bottom line: If you're already an Apple user, this is a no-brainer choice for convenience of setup. The ultra-precise location tracking is also a great reason to choose this it from Amazon for $24.95. The Tile by Life360 Pro for unbeatable battery life Highlights: works with both iOS and Android, can send an SOS alert or make a silenced phone ring, 500-foot range, has a replaceable battery, water- and dust-resistant with IP68 ratingDrawbacks: The most expensive tracker, bigger than some alternativesThe Tile Pro is bigger and more expensive than the AirTag and some of Tile's other offerings (more on those later), but it works with more devices (iOS and Android) and uses the Life360 app, which you may already have downloaded. It boasts a 500-foot Bluetooth range and a few features the AirTag lacks, like the ability to send loved ones an SOS alert if you're ever in an unsafe situation. The Tile Pro's battery, which lasts a year, can also be replaced with affordable batteries to help the device last even line: The Tile Pro is a great choice for Android users, and the extra few dollars over other models may very well be worth it thanks to the replaceable it from Amazon for $34.99 (also available in 2- and 4-packs). The Tile by Life360 Mate, for a cheaper and smaller option Highlights: Smaller and more affordable than the Pro, has many of the Pro's same features, comes in multiple colors, water- and dust-resistant with IP68 ratingDrawbacks: Has a shorter Bluetooth range, battery is not replaceableThe Tile Mate can add some fun to Bluetooth tracking with more color options, as pictured here. It's cheaper, shorter and narrower than the Tile Pro, so if you're hoping for a less clunky design that still has the SOS alert capability and the convenience of using Life360, the Tile Mate is for you. Just note that the Mate has a range of 350 feet compared to the Pro's 500, and that you can't replace the line: This may be a good starter tracker if you're not sure about committing to the Pro yet, and stands out from the pack with its fun it from Amazon for $24.99 (available in six colors). The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 for Samsung users Highlights: One of the more affordable trackers, uses ultra-wideband technology like the AirTag, water- and dust-resistant with IP67 ratingDrawbacks: Only compatible with Samsung Galaxy devicesThe Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 uses Samsung's SmartThings Find app to help you keep track of your things with ultra-wideband technology (this is similar to the AirTag using the Find My network). The SmartTag 2 can send out audible signals to help you find your lost items. Lost Mode also displays your contact information and a message on the smartphone of whoever found line: If you have Samsung Galaxy devices, this could be a good way to keep track of them, but it probably won't be relevant for most it from Amazon for $19.05. The Tile by Life360 Slim, designed specifically for wallets Highlights: Great for wallets, notebooks and other flat items, three-year battery life, works with Life360, water- and dust-resistant with IP68 ratingDrawbacks: May not fit all wallets, is not bendable, some reviewers say it's a little quietWhile many things you want to track may have clips to attach trackers, that can be trickier with something like a wallet. Enter the Tile Slim, which is designed to be as thick as two credit cards and slide right in a wallet, passport holder, notebook or tablet case. You can use the Life360 app to ring the Slim when it's within 200 feet to make it easier to find. Just make sure you check the dimensions of your wallet before you buy so you're certain the Slim can line: This is a great idea for keeping track of wallets and similar items, but it'll only make sense for you if it actually fits the places you want to store it from Target for $29.99. The lesser-known Chipolo ONE Spot, which is basically a cheaper AirTag Highlights: The most affordable option, works with the Find My appDrawbacks: Has mixed reviews for battery life and durability, less water-resistant and not dust-resistant with IPX5 ratingIf you want the ability to use the Find My network without paying so much for an individual AirTag, the Chipolo ONE Spot can provide an alternative. (Right now, it's only avaiable in a four-pack on Amazon, but each tracker comes out to less than half the price of an AirTag.) Unlike the AirTag, this has a keyring hole so you can directly attach it to your items. Based on the reviews summary at Amazon, it seems like the quality overall for this one may not be as great long-term as the other options on this list, and the price reflects that. (It does still have a 4-star rating, indicating reviewers find it to be a good value.)Bottom line: We don't recommend this one over the more popular options above, though if you're looking for a cheap option, this could it from Amazon for $17.
