Johor eyes vacant Health Ministry land in Kempas for affordable housing
JOHOR BARU, June 13 — The Johor government plans to ask Putrajaya to return vacant federal land in Kempas to develop more affordable homes under the Johor Affordable Housing Scheme (RMMJ).
Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the state is eyeing a parcel owned by the Health Ministry, The Star reported today.
'If the ministry is not using (the land), return it to the state government so we can develop RMMJ units for the rakyat,' he was quoted as saying at a ceremony to present RMMJ ownership certificates in Taman Bukit Indah today.
He said Johor is working with the federal government, private developers, and state agencies such as the Johor Islamic Religious Council to boost RMMJ supply.
The state has received over 85,000 RMMJ applications and aims to build 100,000 homes by 2030.
'We have already completed 10 RMMJ projects and we expect to see the completion of more affordable housing developments in Iskandar Puteri, Tebrau, Kulai, Batu Pahat, Kluang and Segamat for this year and next year,' Onn Hafiz was quoted as saying.
On May 27, Kempas assemblyman Ramlee Bohani proposed that unused federal land be repurposed through land swaps for public housing.

FMT Sdn Bhd's head of Bahasa Malaysia and video unit, Zahrul Alam Yahya Shahir, said the media plays a crucial role in providing the data that AI systems learn from. Speaking at the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 Media Forum today, he noted that AI performs best when trained on structured content, as the technology prefers content that clearly outlines the issue and explains the problem. 'The content that AI gives us comes from us. That's why I say it's time for us to empower AI with our content… the analytic content that we put into social media and what not. 'Don't fear AI; we (the media) have long survived alongside it,' he said at the forum titled 'AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity?' He said that media practitioners should be the ones empowering AI, not the other way around. Another panellist, Astro Awani senior editor Nazri Kahar, emphasised that technologies such as AI should not be seen as a threat but an opportunity that the media industry must embrace. He said journalism is at a critical crossroads, demanding that media practitioners quickly adapt to technological advancements. 'This is a crucial moment for us to seize the opportunity. We should not view technologies as enemies that will erase the media industry. Instead, we must set boundaries, adapt and move forward,' he said. Nazri recounted a personal experience, going live for the Sibu by-election in 2010 using only an iPhone instead of expensive conventional broadcast equipment such as satellite systems. 'It was a new approach at that time. We used Skype (a telecommunication application to make voice and video calls and send instant messages), and the results were impressive,' he said, adding that the experience revealed the potential of technology to many people in journalism. Elaborating, he said that media organisations should not be bound by traditional approaches, focusing on concerns over audio and visual quality; instead, they should prioritise news value and timeliness in delivering information.

Tekun: RM23m in financing disbursed to 879 Indian entrepreneurs as of May 1
IPOH, June 14 — The National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund (Tekun Nasional) has disbursed RM23 million in financing to 879 Indian entrepreneurs across the country as of May 1 this year. Senior private secretary to Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister, Datuk B. Anbumani, said the government provided the allocation under the SPUMI (Indian Community Entrepreneur Development Scheme) Goes Big financing scheme, benefiting 137 recipients, adding that another 742 Indian entrepreneurs received funding through the Tekun SPUMI scheme. 'In addition to Tekun financing, many other initiatives under the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (Kuskop) have been rolled out this year, aimed at boosting the economic development of the Indian community. 'Therefore, the Indian community must make the most of the platforms provided by the government, as their economic well-being is crucial. Kuskop remains committed to supporting Indian entrepreneurs by offering various financing opportunities to help them grow their businesses,' he said. He said this today on behalf of the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Deputy Minister, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, after the Vanakam Madani engagement session with Perak Indian entrepreneurs here. MACC seizes RM141m local assets in Klang Valley sukuk highway fund probe, hunts RM15m abroad
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized RM141 million in domestic assets and traced another RM15 million abroad in connection with the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds meant for a Klang Valley highway project. The funds are believed to be linked to a highway concessionaire bearing the title 'Tan Sri'. According to Harian Metro, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the seized assets include RM4.5 million from individual accounts, RM33 million from company accounts, RM24.5 million in luxury condominiums and land, RM26 million in high-end watches, RM7.65 million in nine luxury vehicles, and RM10 million worth of jewellery and diamonds. Also confiscated were RM6 million worth of designer handbags, RM3 million in gold bars, figurines and coins, and four horses valued at RM400,000. The RM15 million in overseas assets is still being traced, said Azam. 'Additionally, around RM25 million from the proceeds of illicit activities was used on alcohol and gambling. The total value of assets and transactions uncovered in this sukuk fund abuse case stands at RM156 million. 'The MACC is now working with authorities such as Bank Negara Malaysia and the Attorney General's Chambers to gather information on overseas assets and properties,' he reportedly told the national daily. Azam said that the statement-recording process involving the 'Tan Sri' is ongoing and will resume on June 19. 'So far, statements from 54 individuals have been recorded to assist with investigations,' he reportedly added. Initial investigations suggest the misconduct took place between 2016 and 2020, involving sukuk funds amounting to RM1.35 billion. This includes false claims totalling RM360 million and RM416 million, as well as another RM50 million from bank loans. The RM1.67 billion highway project reportedly failed to meet its deadline. Investigators are also looking into RM12 million in bribes allegedly paid to certain individuals in return for facilitating the outward flow of funds, which were later returned to the suspect. Last month, four individuals — including a Datuk Seri — were arrested in connection with the case. The suspects, three men and one woman aged between their 50s and 70s, were detained when they presented themselves at the MACC's office. They are suspected of submitting RM360 million in false claims using sukuk funds for the highway project between 2016 and 2017.
