Fred Kerley, an Olympic sprinter and member of Team USA, has been arrested for battery in Florida ahead of a Grand Slam Track event in Miami this weekend.
According to the Broward County police department, Kerley was booked Thursday and charged with battery involving a touch or strike. He was placed on $1,000 bond; as of Friday afternoon, his bond is pending.
Kerley was arrested after allegedly striking a woman with a closed fist, according to a police report obtained by USA TODAY. Kerley encountered the woman, who identified herself to police as Kerley's ex-girlfriend, at his hotel ahead of this weekend's event.
Per USA TODAY, Kerley became hostile and said he was "going to f*** up everyone up in here," before allegedly striking the woman in the face, causing a bloody nose.
In a statement to USA TODAY, Grand Slam Track confirmed Kerley would not be competing in the event this weekend. Kerley was set to compete in the 100-meters and 200-meters; he has since been removed from the list of racers in those events on Grand Slam Track's website.
Kerley's lawyer, Richard L. Cooper, told USA TODAY he believes the case "lacks merit and will be dismissed."
Kerley, 29, is a decorated sprinter who won multiple gold medals at the World Athletics Championships. He won a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics in the 100-meter dash and a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
This is the second time this year Kerley has gotten into legal trouble: The sprinter was arrested for battery in early January after a confrontation with police in Miami Beach. According to the police report, Kerley allegedly tried to pass through a police scene to get to his car when police, who described his behavior as "aggressive" in the police report, wrestled him to the ground and later tasered him before placing him in handcuffs.
Kerley has also been charged with domestic battery on an unrelated case from 2024; he pleaded not guilty to both cases.

Jannik Sinner vs. Carlos Alcaraz odds, picks: 2025 men's French Open Final predictions, best bets

It felt inevitable that this is where the French Open would end up, with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner playing for the title under the lights at Roland Garros on the final Sunday of the fortnight. Alcaraz and Sinner have combined to win the last five Grand Slams, but this is the first time that they'll meet with a major title on the line. And it couldn't have come at a better time. Both Alcaraz, 22, and Sinner, 23, are at the peak of their powers right now. Alcaraz vs. Sinner betting preview The Spaniard does own a 7-4 advantage in the head-to-head and has won the last four meetings, including a win in the final at the Rome Masters in May and a five-set thriller in last year's French Open semifinals. Still, Sinner could end up as the trendier bet Sunday given his flawless form. Carlos Alcaraz is the defending champion at the French Open. AFP via Getty Images The Italian has not dropped a set at Roland Garros and has won 29 straight in Grand Slams dating back to the Australian Open. Sinner will also be the fresher of the two players, since he just finished serving a three-month suspension for a banned substance in May. All Sinner has done since returning to action is win 11 of 12 matches, with 10 of the 11 victories coming via straight sets. Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps Sinner is a ridiculous 18-1 in 2025, with the lone blemish coming against Alcaraz on the dirt in Italy. Not to be outdone, Alcaraz has found another level on the clay this season. The defending champion at Roland Garros is 15-1 on the surface this season and is 30-5 overall this campaign. Alcaraz has had some iffy moments this year, most notably a bizarre loss to David Goffin at the Miami Masters, but he's got more titles (two) than losses (one) since that defeat. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will meet in a Grand Slam Final for the first time on Sunday. REUTERS Alcaraz vs. Sinner pick Alcaraz's game hasn't been as clean as Sinner's during this fortnight at Roland Garros, but that's not really a knock when comparing him to a player who hasn't dropped a set in this tournament. Alcaraz has won every match in four sets or fewer, and he's responded emphatically anytime he's been within a mile of trouble in any match. And in a match where you're going to struggle to find any decided edge, that could be a good thing for Alcaraz. While Sinner has been an incredible front-runner this entire season, he's rarely had to dig deep. The odds for this historic match couldn't be tighter. It's very rare to see a Grand Slam Final close as a pick'em, but we could be headed in that direction Sunday. You're really splitting hairs when it comes to handicapping Alcaraz vs. Sinner in a best-of-five match, but the two factors that push me toward the defending champion are his ability to defend against elite serves andthat he's dealt with some adversity in this fortnight. Those aren't the most convincing of arguments, but that's the nature of trying to find a winner in a battle between two players at the top of their game. Trump rips ‘incompetent' Newsom, LA Mayor Bass amid riots over immigration raids, says masks not allowed at protests

President Trump ripped into California's 'incompetent' leadership and called for a ban on face coverings as masked protesters clashed with federal agents conducting immigration raids across Los Angeles. Trump called out California Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass for their alleged mishandling of violent riots in response to the ICE raids that wrangled up over 100 illegal immigrants — including gang bangers and drug traffickers — this past week. 'We have an incompetent Governor (Newscum) and Mayor (Bass) who were, as usual (just look at how they handled the fires, and now their VERY SLOW PERMITTING disaster. Federal permitting is complete!), unable to handle the task,' Trump wrote on TruthSocial Sunday morning. Rioters caused carnage in the streets of Los Angeles County on Saturday, which forced Trump to call for 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles despite Newsom's objections. 10 Masked protesters stand on the remains of a burnt car while waving the flags of Burkina Faso and Mexico in Paramount, Calif. on June 7, 2025. REUTERS The troops were set to arrive in the area within 24 hours, US Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli told the New York Times. The violent protesters burned down cars, lit fires, threw rocks and fireworks at police and graffitiied vulgar phrases including 'F–K ICE' and 'KILL ICE.' Trump blasted the nameless protesters as 'troublemakers' and called for a ban on face coverings as the violent demonstrations wreak havoc in California. 'These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED. Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests,' Trump said. 'What do these people have to hide, and why?' he questioned. 10 President Donald Trump attends UFC 316 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey Saturday night. AP Homeland Security Secretary Krisi Noem warned rioters of arrests if they harmed law enforcement officers. Trump praised the National Guard troops he had called in to take over crowd control operations to quell the unrest. 'The federal government is sowing chaos so they can have an excuse to escalate. That is not the way any civilized country behaves,' Newsom wrote on X. The 78-year-old commander in chief had already called out Newsom and Bass earlier Saturday before he ordered the National Guard. 'If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can't do their jobs, which everyone knows they can't, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!,' the president. 10 A sheriff's deputy holds back masked protesters during a daytime riot in Paramount, Calif. REUTERS 10 Protesters put up a roadblock near a fire in the streets of Compton. 'If violence continues, active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized — they are on high alert,' Hegseth wrote on X Saturday.

Burgess wins first World Cup silver in six years

Great Britain's Adam Burgess claimed a first C1 World Cup silver since 2019 after a "pretty special" run in the heats. The 32-year-old saw off competition from Olympic champion Nicolas Gestin to finish in second, behind Slovenia's Luka Bozic. Advertisement Burgess produced a stunning run during the heats in north-east Spain to move to the top of the standings. The Stoke-born paddler was last to compete in the finals, but produced a penalty-free run to the start the season in emphatic fashion. Burgess won Olympic silver in the individual canoe at the Paris Games, having agonisingly missed out on a medal by 0.16 seconds in Tokyo in 2020. "I'm always there or thereabouts, and we have done a lot of work to try and bring out those runs in the final, and I guess today, my worst run was the final, but that heat was something pretty special," said Burgess. "It was great to come close to it again there."
