Harimau Malaya captain warns of Vietnam danger despite missing hitmen

KUALA LUMPUR: National captain Matthew Davies urged Harimau Malaya not to underestimate Vietnam despite their rivals being without two of their star forwards for Tuesday's Asian Cup Group F qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
Vietnam will be without naturalised Brazilian striker Nguyen Xuan Son, who has netted seven goals in five appearances, and Nguyen Cong Phuong, who has bagged 12 goals from 56 caps. Both are ruled out through injury.
But Davies insists Malaysia must stay focused on themselves rather than who Vietnam are missing.
"We need to be at our best and ready for all possibilities," said the defender at Monday's pre-match press conference.
"The biggest difference under Peter (Cklamovski) is our emphasis on team play."
"We're not thinking about the absence of their key players because Vietnam will have quality replacements. It's better we concentrate on our own preparation. We know their quality."
Davies also revealed the five new heritage players — Imanol Machuca, Rodrigo Holgado, Joao Figueiredo, Facundo Garces and Jon Irazabal — have started settling in with the rest of the squad since reporting for centralised training last week.
"There were some communication issues at first — language barriers and such," said Davies.
"But for us, wearing the jersey is a big responsibility, and we take it seriously."
"All we can ask from the new boys is that they show the same pride, love and commitment for the national team. The quality is there. They've proven themselves abroad but integration will take time."
"We shouldn't judge them any differently from any other player wearing the Malaysian jersey. What matters is they give 100 per cent."

Mirabel, Jeneath to lead Malaysia's charge at Sea Games

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia are banking on Mirabel Ting and Jeneath Wong to sustain their gold medal streak at the Sea Games in Thailand in December. The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) is confident that with both US-based aces back in the fold, the women's team will once again be in the hunt for top honours, as the nation target a third straight Sea Games triumph. Mirabel has been a revelation in the US collegiate scene this season. The Florida State University standout bagged five individual titles and capped her season by becoming the first Asian to win the prestigious Annika Award, given to the best NCAA Division I female golfer. She's also scaled new heights on the world stage, currently ranked No. 2 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) — the highest ever for a Malaysian. Jeneath, representing Pepperdine University, may not have matched Mirabel's accolades this season, but carved her own slice of history by winning the Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) in Vietnam in March — the first Malaysian to do so in the prestigious championship. MGA president Tan Sri Anwar Nor knows their presence could prove decisive. "Having both Mirabel and Jeneath available again will boost our medal hopes tremendously. A podium finish is almost certain, but whether we can win gold depends on how we fare against the Thais, who will be very strong at home," said Anwar. Thailand are expected to assemble a formidable line-up led by US-based stars Eila Galitsky and Suvichaya Vinijchaitham, with the timing of the Games — during the winter break in the US college season — allowing countries to field their strongest squads. The Philippines are also expected to unleash world No. 6 Rianne Malixi, adding further depth to an already competitive women's field. Mirabel and Jeneath last played together at the 2021 Hanoi Sea Games, combining for silver in the team event. Jeneath also secured an individual bronze. The duo were absent in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2023 after being unable to get clearance from respective schools, but Malaysia still walked away with a gold medal through homegrown hero Ng Jing Xuen in the women's individual event. Jing Xuen, Foong Zi Yu, and Geraldine Wong also claimed a bronze in the team event. This year, Thailand will revert the team format back to stroke play — first introduced at the 2017 KL Games — an option within their rights as hosts. Anwar admitted it may favour the hosts but believes the Malaysians are up to the challenge. "Mirabel and Jeneath are capable of delivering because only the two best individual counting scores will contribute to the team result. If they are at the top of their game, we're right in contention with the Thais," he said. While the women's team carry stronger expectations, Malaysia's men are also shaping up well. Anson Yeo and Nathan Tsen, fresh off a 1–2 finish at the PGM Tour's Tun Ahmad Sarji Trophy last month, have shown they're capable of competing and beating seasoned pros. Even in Cambodia, Malaysia's men delivered beyond expectations. Malcolm Ting, Mirabel's elder brother, stepped up in the absence of more fancied US-based duo Marcus Lim and K. Rhaasrikanesh to win a surprise silver in the men's individual event. Malaysia's campaign in Hanoi 2022 produced a two-gold, one-silver, one-bronze haul, led by Ervin Chang's double gold in the individual and team events, with strong support from Marcus and Rhaasrikanesh. Jing Xuen then kept the momentum going with her golden feat in 2023. However, she won't be returning to defend her title this time, having turned professional last year.

‘The opportunity is in front of us': Harimau Malaya ready to defy odds against Vietnam, says head coach Cklamovski

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — The head-to-head record favours Vietnam, but Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski believes his men are ready to tear the formbook to pieces when the two teams meet in their second Group F match of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here tomorrow. Malaysia last defeated Vietnam 4-2 in the semi-finals of the 2014 AFF Cup in Hanoi and, since then, have lost seven times and drawn once against Vietnam across all competitions. So, why does the Australian tactician feel that Malaysia are better equipped than ever to turn the tide and end their decade-long winless streak against the Golden Star Warriors? Two factors stand out: one is the presence of seven new heritage players and the other is that the team have had a proper training camp ahead of this crucial tie. Cklamovski believes the arrival of the heritage players, together with the presence of the local and naturalised players, will give Harimau Malaya more solidity at the back, creativity in midfield and bite up front. The seven heritage players in the squad are strikers Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca and Joao Figueiredo; defenders Jon Irazabal, Facundo Garces and Gabriel Palmero; and midfielder Hector Hevel. Cklamovski is also satisfied with the players' commitment throughout the centralised training camp, which began on May 19, saying he believes they now have a clear understanding of the football philosophy he is trying to implement. 'It's been sharp, and again, our physical numbers keep improving. We're looking forward to turning all of that into a team performance tomorrow night,' the 46-year-old coach said at a pre-match press conference here today. Vietnam and Malaysia currently share the top spot in Group F with three points each after winning their opening matches. With Vietnam having held the upper hand over them for so long, will it stifle the Harimau Malaya players' tomorrow, or will it spur them to defy the odds? Cklamovski had this to say: 'Instead of being fearful of that (record against Vietnam), it's a challenge that the players and all the staff in our environment want to embrace... and that opportunity is in front of us.' Meanwhile, national team captain Matthew Davies said the backline will not take anything for granted despite Vietnam missing two key attackers — Nguyen Cong Phuong and Nguyen Xuan Son. The Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) player said they'd rather focus on the team's overall performance rather than individual displays. 'I think one of the differences I've noticed under Peter (Cklamovski) is that we're more focused on how we play as a group rather than our individual performances. 'We're also focusing on ourselves rather than the opposition. So, while we're aware (of Vietnam's strength) and we respect them, I think we'll be more focused on what we do tomorrow night,' said the 30-year-old player. — Bernama
