Pull plug on gas engine ban, Tories urge government

Yahoo18 hours ago

OTTAWA — It's time to put the government's planned gas engine ban in neutral.
That was the message from the Conservatives during Tuesday's question period, as the Tories urged the Carney Liberals to end a planned ban on the sale of gas-powered passenger vehicles.
'Workers and families across Canada, especially in rural and northern communities, can't afford this dangerous Liberal experiment,' said Grande Prairie MP Chris Warkentin.
'It's simple, Mr. Speaker, Canadians don't want this shoved down their throat.'
Indeed, polling conducted earlier this year suggests the majority of Canadians aren't a fan of this keystone policy of the Justin Trudeau Liberals, which calls for a total ban on the sale of new gas and diesel vehicles by 2035.
Transport Canada abruptly ended its Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program earlier this year after it ran out of money.
That came just 12 months before the start of the multi-year EV sales mandate, where 20% of all new Canadian car sales must be zero-emission — gradually increasing to 100% within a decade.
Auto industry calls for end to 'complete fantasy' zero-emission vehicle mandates
Canadians oppose Liberal 2035 prohibition of new gas, diesel vehicles
In response, Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin accused the Tories of taking unfair aim at Canada's auto industry.
'Leave it to the Conservatives to hit one of the most major industries that we have in our country, exactly the same time it's being hit with unjustified tariffs in the United States,' she said, to jeers from the opposition benches.
'We stand with our auto workers, we've been investing in our auto industry, and we will keep making sure that we have strong union jobs.'
Canada's auto industry have gone on record in their opposition to the Liberals' plan, with Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association (CVMA) president Brian Kingston describing the Liberal policy earlier this year as 'complete fantasy.'
'There is no pathway to 100% zero-emission vehicle sales in the next 10 years with the supports being provided to Canadians,' he said during a January 2025 news conference.
'Dictating what vehicles Canadians can and cannot buy, without providing them with the supports necessary to switch to electric is a made-in-Canada policy failure.'

Made in Canada products: A complete guide to buying Canadian brands at the grocery store — food, drinks and more

After more than three months of navigating tariffs and subsequent price increases, many Canadians are still choosing to put their money behind home grown and manufactured goods. As tariff discussions continue to unfold between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump, a whopping 95 per cent of more than 9,900 Yahoo Canada readers who voted in a recent poll said that they want to buy Canadian products whenever possible, while only four per cent said the issue didn't concern them. 'I fully intend to buy Canadian and leave American products on the shelves. Most people I know, as well as my family members, are all insisting that they will continue to restrict their purchases to Canadian products even if Trump does not impose tariffs,' a Yahoo Canada reader said earlier this year via e-mail. 'The threat of the punitive tariffs is enough. I will never buy American." 'One option to push back on our American bullies is when we can't find a Canadian alternative, to buy Mexican in solidarity with our true allies — especially when it comes to our groceries," said another. "Failing that, [we can] buy anything other than American - we have lots of choices." "I was always conscientious about Canadian products but now I'm going to be laser-focused on it especially at the grocery store,' a Yahoo Canada reader said. Click here to jump right to our list of Canadian grocery brands By shopping Canadian products and brands, consumers in Canada are exempt from tariffs, which means potentially saving money. Plus, there's the added benefit of supporting Canadian manufacturers who may be impacted by the U.S. import tariffs. Some grocery stores have opted to label Canadian made products with a Canadian flag next to its price tag to help conscious shoppers. Here are some other ways to tell if a product is made in Canada: Look for a "Product of Canada" label This label means that approximately 98 per cent of ingredients, processing and labour used to produce the product areCanadian. According to the Government of Canada, products that claim to be "Canadian" are considered the same as "Product of Canada."Check for "Made in Canada" labels When products are labelled as "Made in Canada" it means that a majority of the product's last substantial transformation occurred in Canada. A substantial transformation of a product would include combining ingredients to create a new product. For example, ingredients like eggs, sugar and butter undergo a substantial transformation to produce cookies. A product can also have a "Made in Canada" label if a majority (at least 51 per cent) of the costs incurred in manufacturing or producing the goods were incurred in Canada even if some ingredients are from other countries. Some packages may include qualifiers to ensure that the consumer knows some ingredients were imported from other countries. Examples of qualifiers can include: Distilled in Canada Refined in Canada Packaged in Canada Processed in Canada Look for 100% claims All ingredients, processing and labour for the product (and all of its components) are from Canada. If you're someone choosing to shop consciously given the tariffs, we've gathered a helpful list of Canadian brands and those manufactured in Canada to help you on your next grocery shop. The Daily Money: Canada cools on American real estate

The Daily Money: Canada cools on American real estate Good morning! It's Daniel de Visé with your Daily Money. Belligerent rhetoric from the White House and combative trade negotiations are denting Canadian interest in owning American property, just as the housing market south of their shared border is starting to cool. Canadians made up the biggest share of foreign buyers of U.S. residential real estate in 2024. But now, their interest seems to be waning. Being openly gay, trans or nonbinary at work just got tougher Five years ago, a technology executive landed a seat on the board of directors of a big corporation. As a person of color who identifies as nonbinary, they were thrilled: Their new company not only embraced their professional credentials, it touted their gender identity, as well. But with attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion spiking as a polarized nation hurtled toward the 2024 election, corporations retreated from public expressions of support for gay, transgender and nonbinary rights. Suddenly, their company did not seem so proud. After years of civil rights advances and hard-fought wins in the workplace, being openly gay, trans or nonbinary in corporate America just got tougher – especially at the top. Juneteenth faces a DEI backlash As protests against racial injustice gripped the nation in 2020, major corporations rushed to observe Juneteenth and give their employees the day off. Five years later, they are still commemorating the holiday, but not with the same fanfare. 📰 More stories you shouldn't miss 📰 About The Daily Money Each weekday, The Daily Money delivers the best consumer and financial news from USA TODAY, breaking down complex events, providing the TLDR version, and explaining how everything from Fed rate changes to bankruptcies impacts you.
