AUS College of Engineering secures renewed accreditation for all undergraduate programs from CAA
Sharjah, UAE – The College of Engineering (CEN) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) has secured the renewed accreditation of its seven long-standing undergraduate programs by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR). This renewed accreditation, valid until January 9, 2031, reflects CEN's commitment to academic excellence, innovative teaching and continuous improvement.
The CAA at MOHESR is responsible for licensing higher education institutions and evaluating their academic programs for accreditation. It works with both international and local authorities to safeguard academic standards and enhance the learning experience for students in higher education institutions.
The seven programs that received renewed accreditation are the bachelor of science degrees in chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and mechanical engineering.
In addition to this national recognition, CEN's commitment to international quality standards is evident through renewed accreditation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in August 2024, covering the same seven undergraduate programs, valid until September 30, 2030.
"This renewed accreditation reflects the exceptional quality of our academic programs and strengthens CEN's position as a leader in engineering education both regionally and globally," said Dr. Fadi Aloul, Dean of CEN. It underscores our commitment to producing graduates who are prepared to excel in a rapidly evolving world. Moving forward, the college will continue to develop across all its programs to ensure we meet the evolving needs of our students, industry partners and the broader engineering community. Notably, receiving ABET accreditation with no deficiencies, weaknesses or concerns—alongside this latest CAA accreditation—demonstrates the high quality of our programs and the exceptional educational experience we offer at AUS,' he said.

In the QS World University Rankings 2024, AUS is ranked among the top five universities in the UAE and the top 450 globally for chemical engineering, number one in the UAE and among the top 200 globally for civil and structural engineering, among the top 10 in the UAE and top 450 globally for computer science and information systems, among the top five in the UAE and top 300 globally for the electrical and electronic engineering category, and among the top three in the UAE and in the top 300 globally in the category of mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering.

AUS launches pathway to graduate studies in environmental science
The agreement, finalized in April 2025, builds on more than two decades of ties between AUS and AU, which share a long-standing institutional relationship dating back to AUS' founding. This latest partnership was spearheaded by Dr. Fatin Samara, a professor at AUS' Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, who is also currently an adjunct faculty member at the Department of Environmental Sciences at AU. Her affiliation with both institutions helped bring the partnership to life, along with support from several members of the environmental sciences faculty. 'The launch of this new partnership, during the same week as Earth Day, symbolizes our community's commitment to creating pathways for students to progress toward environmental leadership,' said Dr. Samara. 'Those who choose this pathway will be equipped with the tools, knowledge and global perspective needed to address pressing environmental challenges and build a more sustainable future.' A highly regarded institution, AU is among the top 100 US universities in the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings and ranks second in the US in The Princeton Review's Green Colleges ranking. 'CAS' leadership is delighted to see this partnership come to life. It reflects our commitment to providing CAS' students with an enriched academic experience that extends beyond borders. This partnership will help accelerate the route to graduate education for our students in the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability program and allow them to spend a year studying in a global center for environmental policy and research,' said Dr. Hana Sulieman, Associate Dean of CAS. Under the 4+1 model, AUS students will complete their four-year bachelor's degree at AUS and transfer to American University for one additional year of study to complete their master's degree. Eligible students may transfer up to nine credits toward the master's degree, including two graduate-level courses and their senior research project, taken during their final year at AUS. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. As part of the agreement, AUS students admitted to the program will also receive a generous 50 percent tuition scholarship, significantly lowering the cost of graduate study in the US. 'We are excited to expand our partnership with the American University of Sharjah through an accelerated pathway to a master's degree in environmental science, said Dr. Vicky Wilkins, Provost of American University. 'This program equips students with the knowledge and skills to confront the complex sustainability challenges of today and tomorrow. Together, we are shaping the next generation of leaders who will drive global environmental progress.' Students applying can choose between a thesis track focused on environmental science research and a non-thesis track in environmental policy and advocacy. Both tracks emphasize interdisciplinary learning and real-world application and integrate science with policy, economics and global sustainability issues. After graduating, students will benefit from Washington, DC's position as an international hub for environmental research, advocacy and policy and its vibrant job market, where junior roles start at $60,000 and senior roles reach over $140,000 a year according to a job search and labor market data platform. Graduates of American University's Master of Science in Environmental Science have gone on to work at organizations such as the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the World Bank, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. AU's faculty are actively involved in cutting-edge research, from food systems and climate resilience to geospatial analysis and environmental toxicology, also making it an excellent destination for AUS graduates wishing to pursue an academic or research career. AUS celebrates 794 graduates at Spring 2025 Commencement
Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour and AUS Chancellor Dr Tod Laursen each delivered a commencement address, sharing messages of pride, perseverance and purpose. Sheikha Bodour said: 'Through determination and tenacity, our graduates leave AUS equipped with firstly academic credentials they can be proud of, but also with the courage to ask tough questions, the empathy to lead with care, and the vision to shape a world of progress and humanity. As they step into the uncertainty of the future, I have every confidence they will adapt, lead with purpose and compassion, and that their decisions will be anchored in highest values of AUS and of Sharjah.' Chancellor Laursen added: 'This graduating class reflects the very essence of our mission—empowering students with the academic strength, ethical grounding and global perspective needed to navigate and lead in a rapidly changing world. We are proud to see them leave AUS not just with degrees, but with the confidence, curiosity and resilience that will define their contribution to society.' Guest speaker Emi Mahmoud, a poet, activist and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, addressed the graduating class with a powerful reflection on resilience and purpose. A Yale graduate, Mahmoud is internationally recognised for her spoken-word poetry and humanitarian work, using her platform to advocate for peace, education and climate justice. Her message to students highlighted the importance of applying their education and skills to drive meaningful change. In recognition of outstanding contributions to academia and research, AUS conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree on Dr. Manahel Thabet, honoring her exceptional achievements in the fields of economics and artificial intelligence. Dr Thabet is a distinguished economist, scientist and expert in quantum mathematics and financial engineering. She is a Guinness World Record holder for conducting the largest memory lesson and is recognised among the 30 smartest individuals alive by Super Scholar. Her global impact includes advising institutions on AI-driven economic strategies and earning accolades such as the Brain of the Year Award and the Arab Woman of the Year Award for Achievement in Scientific Development. She also serves as the Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the Commonwealth in Science and Technology. Student voices were central to the ceremony. Graduate Kareem Mohmoud Hijazi spoke about overcoming self-doubt and building confidence through academic rigor and mentorship at AUS, while graduate Ahmed Ayman Ahmed emphasised the privilege of education amid global unrest and the responsibility to give back. Their reflections captured a collective spirit of resilience, ambition and gratitude. The ceremony also featured the announcement of the university's top student honors. For the first time in AUS' history, the President's Cup was awarded to four students for achieving the highest academic standing in their graduating class—Hussain Ali Sajwani (finance), Hamze Kassem Soueid (electrical engineering), Omar Khaled Farrag (computer engineering) and Yousef Belal Irshaid (computer engineering with a minor in data science). The Chancellor's Cup, awarded to a student who demonstrates exceptional academic excellence, character and service, was presented to Fahad Mahmoud (management information systems with a minor in supply chain management), who graduated magna cum laude. 'AUS is where I made unforgettable memories with friends who became like family. We grew stronger through every challenge, fueled by discipline and support,' said graduate Sajwani. 'As we move forward, let's carry the lessons and moments that shaped us. Growth isn't about perfection, but the strength to move on and the wisdom gained along the way.' This commencement also marked a milestone for AUS, as it celebrated the first graduating cohorts of two master's programs: the Master of Arts in International Studies and the Master of Science in Machine Learning. The Class of Spring 2025 included 123 graduate students (master's and PhD) and 671 undergraduates. Among them were 447 female and 347 male graduates, including 184 UAE nationals. Graduates were distributed across the university's four colleges/school, with 126 from the College of Architecture, Art and Design; 149 from the College of Arts and Sciences; 208 from the School of Business Administration; and 311 from the College of Engineering. These graduates now join a growing global network of AUS alumni bearing the torch of the university's tradition of academic excellence, innovation and impact.

AUS, BEEAH launch professorship in eco innovation
In a significant move that reaffirms the UAE's position at the forefront of sustainability and environmental innovation, American University of Sharjah (AUS) and BEEAH have signed an agreement to establish the BEEAH Professorship in Environmental Innovation and Sustainable Development at AUS. Backed by a generous Dhs5 million investment from BEEAH, the professorship aims to accelerate breakthrough research and equip future leaders with the tools to shape a more sustainable world. The agreement was signed at the AUS campus by Dr. Tod A. Laursen, Chancellor of AUS, and Khaled Al Huraimel, Group Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chairman of BEEAH, in the presence of Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of AUS, and representatives from both institutions.
