Rogers County roads still slick, snow-covered
As Rogers County experiences its coldest weather yet this winter, roads and streets remain treacherous for drivers.
Snow blanketed major intersections Wednesday morning in Claremore, Catoosa, Oologah and other towns around the county following the Tuesday snowfall. The National Weather Service's Tulsa office reported the region will experience life-threatening cold through noon Thursday, with wind chill temperatures below zero.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, the Will Rogers Turnpike remains slick and snowy. Oklahoma Turnpike Authority crews are working on clearing it.
"If you don't need to be out on the road, please don't be out on the road," said John Feary, Claremore's city manager, in a Tuesday video.
Feary said police, fire, public works, construction and streets crews will work 24/7 in shifts the next few days to treat city streets and respond to emergencies. He said anyone who notices a particularly slick spot in city limits can report it to 918-341-1212, the Claremore Police Department's non-emergency number.
Diana Dickinson, spokesperson for Rogers County, said county crews are at work clearing roads, and people should use them for emergencies or urgent needs only.
"This allows local, county and state crews to effectively clear and maintain the roads and bridges without the added obstacles of heavy traffic," Dickinson said. "Doing so makes it safe for everyone, makes snow and ice removal more efficient and allows emergency responders to reach their destinations with unimpeded access."
She said people can check the Rogers County Facebook page for weather updates.
Claremore city and Rogers County offices closed early Tuesday and will remain closed throughout Wednesday. Area school districts likewise called snow days Tuesday and Wednesday.
People can use the Drive Oklahoma app or the state's Oklahoma Road Condition Map to survey the status of state highways. Photos from these sources come from cameras affixed to state snow plows.
According to AccuWeather, Claremore will experience a high temperature of 30 degrees Friday. The weekend will usher in warmer temperatures — up to 48 degrees Saturday and 61 degrees Sunday.

Generosity from community shines as McAlester recovers from Saturday's storms
On the morning of June 7, McAlester residents woke up to see buildings with their roofs ripped away and tree branches scattered in the road. The community of around 18,000 was only under a marginal risk of severe weather, but it 'experienced a mix of both wind and tornado damage,' according to the National Weather Service in Tulsa. With any catastrophe in Pittsburg County, however, compassion rises. Anyone part of the 'What's going on in Pittsburg County' Facebook group has seen the familiar postings of Starla's Sloppy Hog appearances in McAlester. The food truck makes a weekly 50-mile trip to serve barbecue in the Dollar General parking lot. When co-owners Chris and Starla Workman found out about the disaster, they said they immediately knew they wanted to help those in need in a place that has given them and the business unwavering support. 'For me and Starla, it's all about giving back to the community that's provided so much to us,' Chris Workman said. 'We get as much enjoyment out of this as we do winning any trophy doing barbecue competitions or anything like that.' Brad Bevans, owner of All About U Plumbing in McAlester, also said he wanted to do his part in helping the community in which he was born and raised. His company is still offering free emergency plumbing services to storm victims and has already helped 25 people. 'If I can help somebody and it makes a difference in their life, that's what I was sent here for,' Bevans said. McAlester resident SkyAnn Golden summarized the heart of the community best, saying disaster brings out true generosity in people who always want to help those in need through trying times. Golden and her husband Charlie are co-owners of Golden Drywall and Remodeling and have worked tirelessly since the sound of the tornado sirens faded Saturday. The couple has removed tree limbs and debris from the roofs of McAlester residents unable to do the work themselves. 'I know that a lot of times we see the bad news and the bad things that are going on, but there's a lot of good people in this community,' SkyAnn Golden said. 'I'm grateful and I'm thankful that we're in a community that can come together and can help people when they're in need.' Thunderstorms will sweep slowly across the area, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and even some hail. Because of how much rain could fall in a short time, the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for a large part of the region, including Chenango and Madison counties, which will last through tomorrow morning. Flash flooding is a real concern, especially in spots that have already been soaked recently. After a brief lull during the day, storms are expected to fire up again this evening. Some could be severe, especially to the west, with damaging winds being the biggest threat. Hail is also possible, and there's even a slight chance of an isolated tornado. Flooding is a serious risk.
