What does Sigma mean? Nickelodeon sparks outrage with video of Dora The Explorer explaining slang word
Esteemed children's channel Nickelodeon has deleted a bizarre video from across its social media after sparking widespread outrage.
A new CGI version of the beloved character Dora The Explorer returned to screens last year.
And in the latest attempt to appeal to younger audiences, the protagonist features in a baffling clip - where she explains to her viewers what the slang word 'Sigma' means.
The bilingual character, fluent in both English and Spanish, is best known for teaching children new words in each language while they watch along at home.
But the internet was bewildered when the channel extended her language lessons to include nonsensical slang words used by kids on TikTok.
In a video most viewers thought was a parody, Dora says : 'Hola, grown-ups! Today I have a super cool word for you: Sigma! Can you say Sigma?'
'Sigma is a word for someone who is confident, independent and does things their own way,' she continued. 'Think of it as someone who's a leader and a trendsetter.'
The video was torn to shreds by incredulous viewers stunned at the legitimate entertainment company's venture into the world of 'brain rot'.
The term is typically used to describe internet content of such low quality it causes brain power to decline, colloquially speaking.
And 'Sigma' is one of many hard-to-define nonsense words used by children and teenagers online.
In this case, it fits into the characterisation of certain types of men - such as 'alpha male' and 'beta male' - by using letters of the Greek alphabet.
A Sigma male is a quiet, 'lone wolf' type character who gains his social status by being self-reliant and coolly distant.
The word is generally considered a compliment among its demographic, but it also has a nonsensical hold.
For example, the term 'what the Sigma?' - meaning something akin to 'what the hell?' - is also widely used and has no apparent connection to the word's definition.
Dora continued: 'Let's say your friend is doing their own thing - focusing on their goals and not worrying about what others think.
'You can say: "You're such a Sigma!" It means they're strong and cool just being themselves.
'Next time you see someone doing something totally independent and cool, you can say: "That's so Sigma!"
Encouraging watchers to speak along, Dora says: 'One the count of three let's all say "I'm a Sigma",' before she concludes: 'You're all such confident Sigmas.'
Parents and internet users alike were shocked by Dora's 'unhinged' rebrand.
One person wrote online: 'Seriously, why do companies always add brainrot when rebooting popular shows?'
'No, Dora, this means they are brainrotted and watch TikTok 24/7', another said.
'I'm actually about to cry, this is heartbreaking,' one commenter wrote. 'This turned from nostalgia to fricking content farms.'
And one person said: 'Whoever thought of this should be behind bars.'
Many internet users were convinced the video was a joke from a parody account until the channel took it down. People were also shocked at the introduction of 'brainrot' words to mainstream children's media
After the original video was removed from Nickelodeon's social media, it dawned on many that it was not intended as a joke nor released by a parody account.
'That was real?! This whole time, I thought it was AI-generated slop,' said one person.
Others chimed in with similar sentiments, writing: 'I can't believe this is real' and 'Wait, this was REAL?'
'Nickelodeon teaching children brainrot was not on my 2025 bingo card,' another said.
Many pointed to the slippery slope of introducing nonsense slang terms to mainstream children's content.
And others noted that the term 'Sigma' forms part of the dialogue surrounding the toxic online 'manosphere' which seeks to validate male experiences by villainizing women.
'Keep Dora away from manosphere slang, oh my gosh, stop feeding her brainrot,' said one person.
Another comment read: 'I never thought Dora the Explorer would become a manosphere influencer.'
Some online were quick to label the widespread shock as 'sensitive', arguing that the word has indeed made its way into the vocabulary of children and therefore deserves to feature in children's entertainment.
But the overwhelming feeling is one of surreal bemusement, with one user writing: 'I hope somebody got fired for this blunder.'
And internet users have unanimously agreed that Nickelodeon was correct to remove the video.

'I'm not a porn star': 'Diddy' accuser says she asked to stop sex performances
NEW YORK, June 9 (Reuters) - One of Sean "Diddy" Combs' former girlfriends testified on Monday in the hip-hop mogul's sex trafficking trial that she told him in text messages that she felt mistreated in their relationship and asked to stop taking part in sexual performances with other men. "I'm not a porn star. I'm not an animal," the woman, testifying under the pseudonym Jane to protect her privacy, wrote Combs on October 16, 2023, according to a text message she read aloud in court. "It's loveless for me and nothing satisfies you and you always push me to do more and more." The messages could bolster prosecutors' contention that Combs, 55, for two decades coerced women to take part in the sexual performances, sometimes known as "Freak Offs," against their will. Combs is charged with using physical force and threatening to cut off financial support to get women to take part in the drug-fueled, sometimes days-long performances in hotel rooms while he watched. Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records, has pleaded not guilty to charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. His lawyers have acknowledged that Combs was occasionally abusive in domestic relationships, but say the women who took part in Freak Offs did so consensually. Jane, the third alleged sex abuse victim of Combs to testify at his trial in Manhattan federal court, told jurors last week that she was "head over heels" for Combs at the outset of their relationship, which lasted from 2021 through 2024. She testified that most of the time they spent together involved sex performances with male escorts in hotel rooms, even though she wanted to go on dates with just Combs. She said Combs - whose net worth Forbes estimated at above $1 billion in 2022 - threatened to stop paying her rent when she said she wanted to stop having sex with other men. Combs' defense lawyers are due to cross-examine Jane later this week. The trial is in its fifth week. Combs could face life in prison if convicted on all counts. Also known throughout his career as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, Combs turned artists like Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars, elevating hip-hop in American culture and becoming a billionaire in the process.

Jane Fonda reveals she feels 'younger and healthier' at age 87 than she did in her 20s and refuses to accept acting roles as the 'kooky grandmother'
Jane Fonda has made the incredible claim that she feels better at age 87 than she did even in her 20s. The Hollywood legend reveals she refuses to play the 'kooky grandmother, or the dying mother with dementia' in her acting roles as she feels as vibrant as ever. 'People have so many stereotypes of older people. I'm 87, and I feel younger and healthier and a greater sense of well-being than I had in my 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s' she tells the Daily Telegraph. Fonda added that she feels the work she is offered these days often 'isn't worthy' of her. 'I'm 87, I don't feel done yet. Roles that I'm offered are really sad' she told the publication. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'They are not worthy of my six decades of being in this industry'. She added: 'I'm happy... I think one of the greatest things that we can attain is a robust sense of well-being, of happiness.' The acclaimed actress and activist recently dished about how she's been able to maintain her fabulous figure through the years. 'I don't feel like an old person. I'm much younger than I was when I was in my 20s, in all the ways that matter,' the two-time Academy Award winner said, after revealing that she still works out with a trainer every day. Fonda was recently promoting sneaker brand Golden Goose's 25th anniversary, and starred in the new 'Born to be a Super-Star' campaign video. During a conversation with the The New York Times, she elaborated about her exercise routines, personal style and thoughts on ageing, all the while sharing about her fondness for the sneaker brand. 'So it never occurred to me with this campaign, "Oh, God, isn't this great. They're using an old woman"' she added when shifting her focus back to her collaboration with Golden Goose. 'But now that I think about it, it is cool. I like that.' The iconic Barbarella star also opened up about her famous exercise routines, confessing: 'I essentially do everything I used to do, just slower.' 'I used to be a runner, but now I love walking,' she said, before adding, 'I love being outdoors in the woods, especially up and down hills.' Fonda has worked as an actress that spans several genres and over six decades in film and television. She also made a splash as the star of the famed Jane Fonda's Workout video in 1982. The original in the series was the first non-theatrical home video release to top sales charts. In all, Fonda sold 17 million exercise videos in the 1982–1995 series, which has been considered a massive financial success. In fact, it spawned a number of imitators while helping spark the boom for women's exercise classes, en route to making a name for the ladies in the then male-dominated fitness industry. 'I had no idea my videos were going to become such a phenomenon,' Fonda told People. 'When I was starting out, there weren't many rigorous forms of exercise available to women. I learned the basic workout from a charismatic teacher named Leni Kasden in the '70s.' Fonda began her rapid rise to fame as an actress with the romantic comedy film Tall Story (1960), and led to such famed roles in Barbarella (1968), They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1970), Klute (1972), Julia (1977), Fun With Dick And Jane (1977). After a 15 year hiatus from acting she has since starred in Monster-in-Law (2005), Youth (2015), and Our Souls at Night (2017). Additionally she has appeared in such popular series as The Newsroom (2012-2014) and Grace And Frankie (2015-2022).
