Ireland fall to 4-0 loss against India in series opener
Ireland suffered a 4-0 loss to Olympic bronze medalists India in the first of a two-game series at Pembroke this evening.
Early attacking pressure from the visitors called the Irish defensive line into action in the opening minutes.
India eventually managed to break the deadlock through Mandeep Singh, latching onto a pullback from the baseline to find the net on the back post.
They added a second shortly after, with Harmanpreet Singh tucking away a penalty corner to double their lead before the end of the first quarter.
Ireland grew into the game in the second quarter, applying pressure of the own early on and winning a number of penalty corners for their effort following some smart attacking play from Fergus Gibson and Adam McAllister.
Luke Madeley's first effort forced a good save, with the second penalty corner resulting in a mis-trap.
Despite the pressure, India did eventually add a third to their tally, Dilpreet Singh latching onto a loose ball to fire home on his reverse.
Ireland almost pulled one back in the third quarter, Jermey Duncan coming close but his flick from a tight angle glanced off the crossbar, before the Indians made it 4-0 at the end of the quarter.
The sides meet again in Pembroke tomorrow for the second and final game of the India Series before both depart for the Netherlands for the next stage of the FIH Pro League.

Epsom Derby punters threatened with £100 on-the-spot fines under new rules
PUNTERS going to Saturday's Epsom Derby have been threatened with £100 on-the-spot fines. A new council order issued in time for the world's most famous Flat race will aim to crack down on anti-social behaviour. 1 Misbehaving punters could be hit with £100 on-the-spot fines at this year's Epsom Derby Credit: PA:Press Association A public space protection order (PSPO) has been brought in by Epsom & Ewell Borough Council. It could last up to three years and ties in with the council's efforts to clamp down on rowdy behaviour during the two-day meeting. The order applies to anyone harassing or threatening others, or continuing to drink alcohol after being ordered to stop by a police officer, community support officer or council officer. The order was voted in by the council last month. It came as one councillor claimed locals were thinking of leaving the area on account of the allegedly 'intimidating' behaviour during Derby weekend. Shanice Goldman, chair of the crime and disorder committee, said: "The PSPO is a new tool specifically for the Epsom & Ewell area which will allow police and appropriate council staff to address anti-social behaviour effectively, without immediately resorting to arrests. "I hope this order will ensure a more enjoyable experience for everyone on the day, as well as a safer environment in the borough." Robbie Brady wins FAI senior men's player of the year
ROBBIE BRADY HAS been crowned the senior men's international player of the year, as part of the FAI's 35th annual awards. Brady was shortlisted alongside Caoimhín Kelleher and Nathan Collins for the senior men's gong, and was presented with the award by Heimir Hallgrimsson at a team meeting ahead of Friday's international against Senegal. Brady missed all of Ireland's Euro 2024 qualification campaign through injury, but has returned to fitness and established himself as an integral player under Hallgrimsson, scoring the winning goal away to Finland in the Nations League last October. Advertisement Such were Brady's injury issues, he made just three appearances for Ireland between June 2021 and March 2023. He has since played in all but two of the games under Hallgrimsson, and was an ever-present during John O'Shea's interim spell in charge. Brady's importance to Ireland is accentuated by the fact he is with the Irish squad this week: Hallgrimsson sought to rest his Championship players for this window, given it falls so far into their off-season, but Brady is one of two Championship players nonetheless selected for the games, alongside Jason Knight. 'This is brilliant, I didn't expect to win it. . . shows how shite youse have all been if I'm winning this!', joked Brady in response.
