These are hard times for classical music festivals, but the Elgar Festival founded in 2018 by the Worcester City Council is thriving. This concert from the English Symphony Orchestra closed its most ambitious programme yet, and the cathedral was full to bursting. It just goes to show that local pride (Elgar was born in nearby Broadheath) still counts for something.
You'd expect the closing concert to revel in the overflowing, impetuous romanticism of one of Elgar's big-scale works, and it did indeed end with Elgar's immense 2 nd Symphony. However the evening began with something very strange and unsettling in feeling, performed by the English Symphony Orchestra, together with the Elgar Festival Chorus and the baritone Gareth Brynmor John. These Things Shall Be is a cantata by John Ireland, an English composer who grew up in Elgar's shadow, and at times it had a grandeur not far from the great man's. Alongside the grandeur we hear strange intimations of the Beyond, when the harmony becomes uncannily modernist.
It was very apt for the visionary words by the Victorian poet John Addington Symonds, which look forward to a time when 'a loftier race than ever the world hath known shall rise, with flame of freedom in their souls and light of science in their eyes.' The idea that science could bring about Utopia is both inspiring and unsettling, a feeling caught superbly in this performance conducted by Stephen Shellard, even though Ireland's ecstatic outcries and curious harmonies taxed the heroic Elgar Festival Chorus to the limit.
Compared to that strange vision from more than a century ago the set of songs Out of the Shadows by 70-year-old composer Ian Venables seemed more stable and reassuring. The songs are a celebration of homosexual love, commissioned for the 30 th anniversary of the partnership of Robert Venables KC and Gary Morris, and sung with meditative tenderness by Gareth Brynmor John. The music's refulgent harmonies and glowing orchestral arrangement (done specially for this concert) made for a serenely beautiful if somewhat unvaried celebration of a love that only a few decades ago 'dare not speak its name'.
Compared to that Elgar's 2 nd Symphony felt like a return to the unsettling ambiguities of the Ireland cantata we heard earlier. Kenneth Woods, artistic director of the festival and the English Symphony Orchestra gave space to these visionary moments but never lost sight of the overall trajectory. In the cathedral's huge space the bringing together of all the music's threads in the dying-away ending took on a special glow.

One lucky ticket-holder could bag the biggest lottery win the UK has ever seen if they scoop the top prize in Friday's record EuroMillions draw. The jackpot has rolled over again after Tuesday's £199million draw, which would also have been a record-breaking amount, had no winners. There is now an eye-watering £208million up for grabs - which would see the winner pip the likes of Harry Styles and Rory McIlroy on the wealth scale. Andy Carter, Senior Winners' Adviser at Allwyn, said: 'We are now on the verge of potentially creating the biggest National Lottery winner this country has ever seen. '[It would make] a single UK winner instantly richer than the likes of Adele and Dua Lipa while also landing them at the number one spot on The National Lottery's biggest wins list.' An anonymous UK ticket holder won the existing record jackpot of £195 million on July 19 2022, while just two months earlier, Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, won £184,262,899 with a Lucky Dip ticket for the draw on May 10 2022. The UK's third biggest win came after an anonymous ticket-holder scooped the £177 million jackpot in the draw on November 26 last year, while the biggest this year was £83 million in January. MailOnline reported last month that a grieving son found his mother's winning lottery ticket three days after she had died. Liam Carter, 34, found the EuroMillions ticket folded inside an envelope, which his mother Anne and avid lottery player had heartbreakingly scrawled on the front 'Sat draw - don't forget!'. She died on April 16, aged 67, just two days before her winning numbers came up having played every week and 'never winning anything big in her life'. Mr Carter, originally from Hampshire but now living in Aberdeen, discovered the folded envelope inside her kitchen drawer, where his loving mother usually kept her tickets. It meant Anne had won a payout of £18,403. Mr Carter had almost ignored the ticket but said 'something told me to check'. 'I scanned it using the National Lottery app, and it said it was a winning ticket — but I'd have to call the lottery line,' he added He phoned the line last Saturday and 'just froze' when he was told of how much the winning ticket was worth. Mr Carter said: 'I must've gone quiet on the phone. It didn't feel real. She never won anything big in her life — and now this.' He added: 'She always said if she ever won, the money would be for me,' he said. 'And even though she never knew about this win, it really felt like something she left behind for me. Like one final gift.' He plans to use the money towards a deposit on a flat, something he says his mother always wanted him to achieve. Police have released footage of an officer who 'behaved aggressively and used unreasonable force' while arresting a boy, 15, to combat 'misinformation'. Pc Lorne Castle was dismissed after a disciplinary hearing held by Dorset Police following the incident in Bournemouth town centre on January 27 2024. The two-minute clip, released by the force on Tuesday, shows the officer tackling the boy to the ground before taking hold of the teenager's face and throat while repeatedly swearing and shouting at him. The boy can be heard shouting and crying 'what have I done' and 'what did I do' before the officer shouts 'stop screaming like a little b****, do you understand that? Shut up.' The teenager also screams 'my f****** neck, get off me, I don't want you on me', while Pc Castle is on top of him. The officer later shouts 'Stop resisting or I'm gonna smash you, do you understand?' and says the boy is being arrested on suspicion of assault. In a statement, Dorset Police said they had chosen to release the body-worn video because of the 'high level of public interest in the outcome of the misconduct hearing locally and to challenge misinformation.' Pc Castle previously admitted misconduct in relation to breaching the standards of professional behaviour relating to authority, respect and courtesy, conduct and use of force but denied gross misconduct, the force added. However, an independent panel found that the breaches amounted to gross misconduct and Pc Castle was dismissed without notice. The video formed part of the evidence reviewed by the panel during the three-day hearing which concluded on May 29. A knife was found around four-minutes into Pc Castle's interaction with the boy, after he had been put in handcuffs, Dorset Police said. The force added that the officer had been responding to information that the teenager may have been involved in an earlier suspected assault, but at no time was there any suggestion that a knife had been used. No further action was taken against the boy in relation to the reported assaults and he was issued with an out of court disposal for possessing the knife, according to police. Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Farrell said: 'I understand the strength of feeling in this case and it is right to be open and transparent about what the independent panel saw, alongside other evidence and testimony. 'We are sharing body worn video to address concerns about misinformation and to reassure the public that, while tackling crime in Dorset, our officers will continue to be proactive and robust – but by using their powers proportionately and with respect. 'Tackling violence, knife crime and antisocial behaviour are absolutely our priorities. 'At times our officers are required to use force to affect the arrest of suspects, prevent offences and protect the public, their colleagues and themselves. 'I have the utmost respect for the vast majority of officers, who have to use force when making an arrest and do so appropriately and with professionalism, even when they are exposed to risk and violence. 'They do a tough job and when their actions are proportionate, necessary and reasonable they will always be supported.' In a statement Dorset Police Federation criticised Dorset Police's decision to release the footage, saying the force had done so 'without also providing context or balance'. The federation added: 'Our view is that the showing of selective clips of an officer's body worn video is not a useful or responsible way to properly inform the public about an incident – and only serves to entice the public into making judgments without having the benefit of all the facts. 'This is not fair or just. ' The formal written outcome of the hearing will be published at a later date. Pc Castle will also be placed on the police barred list, preventing him from holding any future role in policing.
