Huawei leads global wearables market, Apple is only third

GSM Arena4 days ago

According to a new report from IDC China, Huawei led the global wearables market in the first quarter of this year (January to March), with 10 million shipments, taking a 21.9% market share. This represents 42.4% growth compared to the year-ago quarter, when it shipped 7 million units and had 17% of the market.
Next up is Xiaomi with 8.7 million shipments and 19% of the pie. Xiaomi recorded the biggest year-on-year growth at 42.6%, as last year it had 6.1 million shipments and a 14.7% market share.
Apple is only in third with 7 million shipments and a 15.5% market share. It grew 37.2% from its Q1 2024 performance of 5.1 million shipments and 12.5% market share.
Samsung is in fourth with 3.4 million shipments and 7.5% of the pie, and its sales have declined by 5.7% compared to the year-ago quarter when it managed 3.6 million shipments for an 8.8% market share.
Rounding up the top five is Garmin with 2.1 million shipments and 4.7% market share, growing 29.5% year-on-year from 1.6 million shipments and 4% market share.
The market overall shipped 45.6 million units in Q1 this year, of which 34.81 million units were smartwatches and 10.76 million were smart bands. The market overall is up by 10.5% from 41.2 million in Q1 2024.
Of those 45.6 million units, 17.62 million represent the Chinese market alone, which grew 37.6% year-on-year. China's smartwatch market shipped 11.4 million units, up 25.3% year-on-year, and its smart band market managed 6.21 million units shipped with a growth of 67.9%.
All of this growth in China is driven by the national subsidy scheme by the Chinese government, and this will continue to promote growth in the country's wristwear market, with IDC predicting that full-year 2025 numbers will be 36.9% higher than in 2024.

Feature in iOS 26 will reduce one major fear about software updates for iPhone users

Have you ever been caught in a situation where you have a software update to load on your iPhone but don't have enough storage space remaining? So you are forced to go through your apps to decide which ones you really need. Do you really want to keep CSPAN? Do you really need all 22 weather apps you've downloaded on your iPhone? So you delete some apps and hope that you've opened up enough space to load the software update. The actual part of the release notes discussing this new feature says, "Depending on the amount of free space available, iOS might dynamically reserve update space for Automatic Updates to download and install successfully." Think about how big this could be for app hoarders or even just those iPhone users who love shopping at the App Store. What we don't know yet is how the dynamic storage reserve works, how much storage Apple will be able to create in reserve, whether iPhone users will be allowed to opt out of the feature, and whether iPhone users will receive a notification telling them that they have a certain amount of storage held aside for the next software update. With the new feature, the process of installing software updates on your iPhone will be more seamless and less of a worry assuming that the dynamic storage reserve does its thing. Seeing a notification like this on your iPhone might be a thing of the past once iOS 26 is installed. | Image credit-Cisdem Currently, iOS uses a temporary feature that requires storage to be temporarily created and employed during an iOS update. This temporary working space can be two to three times the size of the file being downloaded as a software update. This space is needed during the update process to hold the files being unpacked. It's at this point in the updating journey that you might receive a message reading "Not Enough Storage." While iOS 26 Developer Beta 1 is available now, you don't have to be a developer to install it. Make sure to back up your phone first. There are bugs, as you can expect, and your battery life will be shorter. The first Public Beta for iOS 26 will arrive next month and the stable version of the new major iOS build should be released in September alongside the iPhone 17 series.

Huawei has switchable lenses on the Pura 80 Ultra, iOS 26 is here, Week 24 in review

It was a busy week. Both Apple and Google offered major software events - Apple's WWDC detailed the next versions of its iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Apple TV software, while Google released Android 16 to the masses. Apple's iOS 26 has a new design called Liquid Glass with emphasis on transparent and changeable visuals, inspired by VisionOS. And yeah, we jumped from iOS 18 to 26 because of consistency. The iPad got a major update too with the addition on the Background Tasks API - now you can finally call it a computer! Huawei's Pura 80 series is here, and the Pura 80 Ultra is unique. It has a 1-inch type main camera, an amazing screen, a big battery, but that's not the unique part. It packs a 50MP 1/1.28-inch sensor attached to two zoom lenses. Huawei fitted an intricate moving mechanism that shifts between the two lenses. You get 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom with sensor-shift OIS. This effectively means that you can capture shots at f/2.4 aperture with an 83 mm equivalent focal length or at f/3.6 aperture with a 212 mm focal length. The Pura 80 series is available in China - the Pura 80 Pro and Pro+ already, while the Pura 80 Ultra is on pre-order and will begin shipping on June 26. The vanilla Pura 80 isn't available just yet. Google released the stable Android 16 to its Pixel lineup, going back to the Pixel 6 series. However, two of Android 16's biggest changes are not part of this first stable release. We're talking about Material 3 Expressive and the new Desktop mode, which will arrive later. There's no sign of the Glyph Interface - and the dot-matrix display that is rumored to be replacing it. The most significant redesign since iOS 7 is here. The two lenses are attached to a massive 1/1.28-inch telephoto sensor. Huawei has stepped up not just its camera game, but it has improved satellite messaging, faster chipsets, better water resistance and more. Available for Pixel 6 series and up. Oppo quietly launched A5i and A5i Pro, though they are not entirely novel designs. Both are based on the Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen 1, which is a rebrand of the Snapdragon 662. The same chip was used in the Oppo A5 Pro 4G, which shares many similarities with these two new models. The Oppo A5i Pro is available in the Philippines – right now, it's exclusively sold through Shopee, but starting on June 20 it will also be available from Oppo's TikTok shop and Lazada. The Pro is priced at PHP 9,000, which converts to $160/€140/₹14,000. We haven't found Oppo A5i in stores just yet. The A5i comes in Starry Purple and Nebula Red, the A5i Pro comes in Midnight Purple. You probably saw this coming. The Pro also has the better camera, though the differences between the two models aren't huge. Unsurprisingly they will be higher than their predecessors'. More health insights at the tip of your fingers. They are allegedly going to be announced together.
