Shastri cautions India about resting Bumrah in second Test against England

India Gazette16 hours ago

Leeds [UK], June 25 (ANI): Former cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri believes India should think twice before resting world number one Jasprit Bumrah in the second Test against England after succumbing to a five-wicket defeat at Headingley.
On the final day of the pulsating fixture on Tuesday, England gunned down a 371-run target to pull off their second-highest successful chase in Test cricket. Bumrah served as the driving force in India's seemingly toothless attack, with sizzling figures of 5/83 in the first innings.
During India's 371-run defence, Bumrah lost his magic and went wicketless. After the conclusion of the contest, head coach Gautam Gambhir declared that the management won't budge from Bumrah's three-match utilisation.
Shastri warned the Indian camp to think twice before resting Bumrah in the second Test at Birmingham, which begins on July 2.
'If he (Bumrah) was looking at a rest, you may have to think twice. If you don't have him and then go 2-0 down, it could be an uphill task,' Shastri said on Sky Sports.
Compared to Bumrah's figures of 5/140 from 43.4 overs at an economy rate of 3.20, the rest struggled to match his impact. Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna combined to return with figures of 9/482 from 92 overs, a massive chasm.
During the announcement of India's squad for the Test tour of England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had confirmed Bumrah was advised not to contest in consecutive Tests as part of his workload management. The precaution around Bumrah's usage stems from a stress reaction in his back during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January.
Former India batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar had suggested that India should consider playing Bumrah in all five Tests. However, Gambhir quickly turned down the suggestion, claiming they were more concerned about his workload.
'I think for us, managing his workload is more important because there's a lot of cricket going forward, and we know what he brings to the table as well. So, before he came to the tour, it was already decided that he was going to play three Test matches. But let's see how his body turns out,' Gambhir told reporters in the post-match press conference. Rishabh Pant should be compared with Virat Kohli: R Ashwin's massive praise for batter

Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has said that wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant should be compared with Virat Kohli. Pant put up a remarkable performance in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, as he scored hundreds in each innings of the became just the second wicketkeeper in the history of the game to achieve the feat after Andy Flower. Despite Pant's historic feat, India ended up losing the match by five wickets as England chased down the massive target of 371 on Day 5 and took a 1-0 lead in the India's loss, Ashwin praised Pant for his magnificent performance and compared him to the likes of Virat Kohli, mentioning his ability to pick the ball early. "Rishabh Pant should be compared with the likes of Virat Kohli. He is a mainstream batter. Because he has got so much time. Some of these special batters have that knack of picking the ball early. They pick the line quickly, pick the length quickly and they get into lovely positions. Rishabh Pant is one of those rare players who has got that special skill," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'.Furthermore, Ashwin suggested India to extend every innings and increase the amount of time they keep England in the field to not give them much time to chase in the fourth thing that the Indian team's batting can focus on is in every innings, can you extend your batting with time -- not by runs. Increase the amount of time England is fielding and increase the amount of time you keep them on the field. When you didn't extend your batting into Day 5, the game was over. This England team has openly advertised that they will go for the target whatever may be the target. So as a batting lineup, we've to keep in mind that we have to give them less time but give a bigger target,' he scored at a rate of more than 4.5 runs per over in both innings of the Test as they took just 82 overs to chase down 371 on the final day. Hence, India will have to be wary of England's strengths and give them a huge target to chase in a shorter time going ahead in the ended up losing the first Test despite registering five centuries, becoming the first team to have the ignominious feat against their name. Hence, captain Shubman Gil will have to regroup his men quickly for the second Test and inspire them to level the series 1-1.- EndsMust Watch

Ex-RR Owner Raj Kundra, Banned For Betting In 2015, Accused Of Blackmailing Current Owner: Report

Indian Premier League cricket franchise Rajasthan Royals' majority owner on Wednesday accused his former co-owner of trying to blackmail him by alleging he was defrauded out of his minority stake in the club. London-based venture capitalist Manoj Badale and his company Emerging Media Ventures are suing businessman Raj Kundra at London's High Court for allegedly breaching a 2019 confidential settlement agreement. The case centres on Kundra's former shares in Rajasthan Royals, winner of 2008's inaugural IPL which is now cricket's richest tournament with a brand value of $12 billion. Badale's lawyer Adam Speker said Kundra, who is married to Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, had threatened to report serious allegations to Indian authorities in a "blackmail attempt". Kundra, however, says he has been told information about the claimants and his lawyer William McCormick that, if that is not true, "in due course it will be exposed". Kundra had to forfeit his 11.7% stake after being found guilty in 2015 of betting on IPL games in a scandal which led to the Rajasthan Royals being suspended for two years, Speker said. He added in court filings that Kundra emailed Badale "out of the blue" last month, alleging he had been "misled and defrauded of the rightful value of my 11.7% stake". The email to Badale said Kundra had filed a complaint with Indian authorities and threatened to make a report to India's Cricket Board (BCCI). Kundra added, however, that he was willing to discuss a deal involving "the restoration of my original equity or compensation reflecting the true and current valuation of the Rajasthan Royals franchise". Speker said Kundra also messaged disgraced IPL founder Lalit Modi this month, saying Badale "did not realise cheating me of the true value would cost him dearly". Badale and his Emerging Media Ventures, which holds a 65% stake in Rajasthan Royals, obtained an interim injunction against Kundra on May 30, preventing Kundra from breaching the settlement agreement by making disparaging statements. Kundra's lawyer McCormick said Kundra accepted the injunction should continue until a full trial of the lawsuit. "It is not an admission that anything improper has been done or is being threatened," McCormick said.

KL Rahul's commitment to choosing ‘country over his child' gets exuberant praise: ‘He said, I want to go England early'

Former India cricketer and Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani lauded KL Rahul for his commitment, highlighting how he joined the Indian team in England early despite recently embracing fatherhood. Rahul, who is the senior-most batter in the current Test team after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's retirement, arrived in England early before the rest of the squad and played an India A game to get ready for red-ball cricket after the completion of IPL 2025. The elegant right-hander backed up his early arrival in England with a brilliant century in the second innings of the first Test, justifying his decision and underlining his commitment to the team. Instead, Rahul played the full IPL season for his franchise and then headed straight to England for national duty. "I really liked the fact that he was someone who said, 'I want to go to England early. I want to play the side game.' Forget about the hundred he got — that came later. The intent — that's what matters. The intent to be there early, to be prepared, to be with the side. Let's not forget, he's a young father, and I don't think his child is travelling with him initially. So for him to say, 'Country over my child' — that's a huge call," Badani told Times of India. "He could've easily said, 'I'm not playing the side game anyway, I'll just go straight to the Test match.' But he didn't," he added. 'KL Rahul has played the senior-most batter role really well' A second-innings century in the opening Test didn't just put India in command at a crucial juncture; it reaffirmed Rahul's place as the pillar of India's new-age batting order after the retirements of Rohit and Kohli. In a transitional phase for Indian cricket, where younger players are finding their footing and leadership is shifting hands, Badani stated that Rahul displayed great commitment and lived up to the role of senior player in the side. "KL made a statement I remember ahead of the Test series: 'I care for this team, and I want to be here.' He wanted to go to England. I could see the hunger in his eyes and in his words. In the absence of Rohit and Virat, he becomes the senior-most batter — and he has played that role really well," said Badani.
