Australia launches domestic Super Rugby competition
SYDNEY, June 17 (Reuters) - Rugby Australia have announced an annual domestic Super Rugby competition aimed at giving the country's senior players more game time to kick off in September and October this year.
With teams playing only 14 regular season games in Super Rugby Pacific, there has been concern that players outside the Wallabies set-up do not play enough rugby compared to their peers in other countries.
"The Super Rugby Pacific season is relatively short and sharp, and the contracted players who aren't involved with Wallabies can go a long time between games at that level," RA's Ben Whitaker said in a statement.
"Super Rugby AUS will also be an opportunity to showcase the best emerging player and coaching talent out of club rugby, along with the national and Super Rugby pathway programmes."
The New South Wales Waratahs, ACT Brumbies, Western Force and Queensland Reds will play each other once over three rounds with a final following on a fourth weekend.

England star joins Lions as cover for Argentina clash after injury scare
England scrum half Jack van Poortvliet will link up with the British and Irish Lions as injury cover ahead of the opening match of the tour against Argentina rugby. The Lions face the Pumas in Dublin on Friday evening before flying Down Under to prepare for three Tests against Australia rugby next month but head coach Andy Farrell has already been handed an injury conundrum. With that in mind, Farrell has drafted Van Poortvliet in as cover, for training at least, with the Lions confirming the move in a short statement. 'Leicester Tigers and England scrum half Jack van Poortvliet will this morning fly into Dublin to train with the Lions as they prepare for the 1888 Cup fixture against Argentina,' read the statement. 'Van Poortvliet will join as cover ahead of the Lions game on Friday.' Van Poortvliet had been named in England's 36-man training squad on Monday, ahead of their match against a France XV at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, on Saturday. The 24-year-old looks set to be England's starting scrum half for their tour of the Americas this summer, with regular No 9 Mitchell otherwise engaged on Lions duty. Van Poortvliet made his England debut against Australia in 2022 and has since won 15 international caps. He started for Leicester at the weekend as they narrowly lost 23-21 to Bath in the Gallagher Prem final. How long he stays with the Lions remains to be seen and may depend on the fitness of Gibson-Park. His England team-mates Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour both spent last week training with the Lions in Portugal before leaving camp when the cohort from domestic finalists Bath, Leicester and Leinster joined up after finishing their club duty.

All Black Savea to skip Super Rugby in favour of Japan sabbatical in 2026
June 17 (Reuters) - All Blacks loose forward Ardie Savea will skip Super Rugby with Moana Pasifika next year and take a sabbatical in Japan at the Kobe Steelers club, New Zealand Rugby (NZR) said on Tuesday. The former World Rugby Player of the Year, who spent the 2024 Japanese season with the Steelers, will be available for test duty until the end of the November internationals and return in time for the 2026 mid-year tests. The news will come as a blow to Moana fans after Savea inspired the team to several notable victories and the brink of the Super Rugby Pacific playoffs in his first season at the club this year. "It's hard to leave, even though it's only for one season, but I'll be supporting the team from afar and will stay involved behind the scenes," the 31-year-old said in a statement. "This year at Moana Pasifika was the happiest I've been in my career." The sabbatical system was introduced to enable players to benefit from lucrative deals offered by Northern Hemisphere clubs while still remaining contracted to NZR and therefore available for test rugby. "Sabbaticals are a key component of our contracting model and provide flexibility for our most senior All Blacks to spend some time in a different environment," NZR's Chris Lendrum said. Jack van Poortvliet handed Lions call-up
Van Poortvliet has won 15 caps since making his senior international debut on England's tour of Australia in 2022. The 24-year-old started for Leicester Tigers in the Premiership final at the weekend and was promptly named as one of three scrum-halves in Steve Borthwick's latest training camp. Ben Spencer, a newly-crowned Premiership champion with Bath, and Raffi Quirke of Sale Sharks were the other two options in Borthwick's 36-man group. Will Porter and Charlie Bracken are among the scrum-halves to have been in training earlier this summer, with Harry Randall injured. As far as other candidates should the Lions require a permanent replacement for Gibson-Park, Ben White is still involved in Toulon's Top 14 campaign. He, George Horne and the versatile Jamie Dobie were named as part of the Scotland squad that will travel to take on the Maori All Blacks, Fiji and Samoa this summer. This call-up for Van Poortvliet is no guarantee that he will make the trip to Australia or remain with the Lions beyond this weekend. Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour both spent last week training with the Lions in Portugal before returning to the England fold as players from Bath, Leicester and Leinster were reintegrated into Farrell's cohort.
