Valor Games Southeast Celebrates ‘13 Years Strong'
BUSINESS WIRE)--Bridge II Sports (BIIS) is honored to bring the spirit of Valor Games Southeast (VGSE) to the Triangle for the 13th year with the continued support of presenting sponsor MetLife and its employees.
The theme of this year's Valor Games is 'Undaunted, Undeterred. Undefied.' Since 2013, VGSE has engaged over 1,000 Veterans with disabilities through the power of adapted sports competition and camaraderie. This year's games will consist of a three-day event with eleven competition sports at several locations, with closing ceremonies to be held at the MetLife Global Technology Hub in Cary.
'Over the years, I have witnessed lives heal through Valor Games SE, giving hope for a future that is impacted by the storms of war,' said Ashley Thomas, Founder & CEO, Bridge II Sports. 'As a person who lives with disability, my biggest joy is seeing people find their way, engaged with their families and community, living life well with limitations instead of living disabled. It is an honor. I am thankful to our premier sponsor and the many other sponsors.'
This life-changing event is made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and support from several community and corporate partners. For the 10th year running, MetLife is serving as a presenting sponsor of VGSE. Beyond providing generous financial support, MetLife has engaged a strong core team of employees, predominantly Veterans, who have committed more than 5,000 volunteer hours over the years to assist with planning and supporting this event.
'As one of the world's leading financial services companies, MetLife plays an important role in being committed to the communities where we do business,' said Tony Granata, MetLife Valor Games Executive Sponsor and a US Navy Veteran. 'We are honored to be able to partner with BIIS to present the Valor Games, a one-of-a-kind, inspirational week of events, focused on the men and women who served our country.'

The 2nd Annual Military Thriving Change Forum at Georgetown University
A Private Sector Led Movement Calling the Next Generation to Serve ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- On June 12, 2025, ZeroMils is partnering with Georgetown University to host its second annual Military Thriving Change Forum. Nearly 150 senior leaders from across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors will convene in our nation's capital to create actionable community based solutions that empower Veterans to lead, thrive, and inspire the next generation to serve. You can be part of the Change Forum virtually from wherever you live, work, and serve by joining our livestream on YouTube. Dr. Joel Kupersmith, a Navy Veteran and Emeritus Professor at Georgetown University said, "Our goal is clear. By channeling local leadership through a nationally-driven strategy, we will empower Veterans, military spouses and their families to rewrite the narrative and change negative attitudes toward our military and our civic life — one community at a time." In the wake of service opportunities at AmeriCorps being drastically cut and military service becoming an increasingly unlikely path for young people, the Georgetown Change Forum comes at a critical time. Although the military continues promotional campaigns to combat negative viewpoints and some branches of the armed forces have lowered accession standards, DOD is still struggling to meet its recruiting goals. A scarcity of mentorship and positive role models for youth in cities and towns across the country may be exacerbating these shortages. A recent national study found the share of young people aged 18 to 21 who report having had a childhood mentor dropped six percent over the past decade Roughly one-third of teens nationwide, most from the lowest socioeconomic quartile, report never having experienced a mentoring relationship. When asked, many unmentored youth said "they didn't know how to find a mentor or didn't think mentors were available to them." It is in the continued service of 18 million Veterans representing 6% of the population, where a unique opportunity to address both of these systemic issues exists. With their wealth of experience and leadership skills, they can play a pivotal role in inspiring the next generation to serve in the military, and in other service professions that are equally vital to national and regional security. Part of the solution lies with a select group of military and Veteran-led nonprofits that have stepped up to fill these gaps since the Global War on Terrorism started. Veterans, through their involvement in these organizations, are serving as mentors and role models, guiding tens of thousands of youth toward careers in the military and service oriented fields. One such nonprofit, Soldiers to Sidelines, enables 2,000 certified Veteran coaches to touch the lives of 100,000 young people each year. Led by former professional football coach Harrison Bernstein, Soldiers to Sidelines will be on full display at the Georgetown Change Forum. More than 100 youth from three DC high schools will come to Cooper Field learning from a dozen Veteran coaches, alongside the coaching staffs from Georgetown and the Washington Commanders. With the help of a service disabled Veteran owned business called ZeroMils, the Change Forum will set the stage for thousands more Veterans to engage with young people at similar Uniting in Service events across the country including Minneapolis in August and Charlotte in November. Founded by two Marine Colonels, ZeroMils started its Military Thriving mission in response to growing trends that espoused "military friendliness" and emphasized the challenges and struggles of Veterans post military service. The company's vision is to create a Military Thriving movement that changes the "broken Veteran" narrative. At the Change Forum, ZeroMils will also be launching a Military Thriving Action Coalition with longstanding partners, National University, Wells Fargo, CVS Health, Neighborly, and more than two dozen senior leaders from the private sector with a long history and proven track record of supporting military and Veteran causes. "We must establish a coalition of the committed to change misperceptions about service," said the CEO of ZeroMils, retired Marine Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Schmiegel. "Together, the private and public sectors can spotlight the strengths and successes of our military and veteran-connected families rather than the struggles. Young people need to hear and see that we, as Veterans, are thriving because of our service, and not in spite of it." ABOUT ZEROMILS: ZeroMils is a mission-driven, service-disabled veteran-owned consulting firm that helps companies design and implement enterprise strategies to better attract, retain, and engage military-connected talent. We help organizations amplify their impact through best-in-class people practices, community leadership, and bold marketing that builds brand trust. In 2022 ZeroMils launched a Military Thriving® movement to change the narrative about Veterans and their families, by spotlighting their success stories, leadership and the value they bring to the workplace and in society. Pirates players visit Veterans Leadership Program for food distribution event
On a beautiful Monday morning in Pittsburgh's Strip District, volunteers joined together to provide free food for military veterans. The donation event is held monthly through the Veterans Leadership Program, which offers help like housing and career development, wellness, and supportive services. "This gives them an opportunity once a month to not worry about that and continue to worry about rent and securing sustainable employment," said Veterans Leadership Program Chief Development Officer Toshua Jarrett. She said that during any given year, they serve over 8,000 veterans in and around our community. For this food donation packing and distribution event, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank donated the food. However, the volunteers included 84 Lumber, community members, and four Pittsburgh Pirates. Those Pirates players include Braxton Ashcraft, Chase Shugart, Nick Gonzales, and Brett Sullivan. "Helping veterans in any way that we can," said Ashcraft. "You know, I come from a family of veterans, and being able to come here and help out and put some smiles on faces and just interact and meet people is really what it's all about," said Shugart. "What other place would you rather be to help veterans and pass out some food and goods?" said 84 Lumber's Randy Delesk. "And it's very rewarding because you get to also interact with (the veterans)," longtime Veterans Leadership Program volunteer and Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Melinda Bondarenka said. It's a packing event putting players and the public on the same team to help local veterans. The next VLP food distribution in the Strip District will happen in July. Meanwhile, the Pirates host a Military Monday at PNC Park on the first Monday home game of every month. Monday night's game will be the third Military Monday event so far this season, and before the game, they'll have an Air Force swearing-in ceremony.
