Chinese EV maker Xpeng, peers look to win over Hongkongers to power global push
He Xiaopeng, co-founder and CEO of the Guangzhou-based carmaker, said in Hong Kong on Thursday that testing of its Xpeng Navigation Guided Pilot (X NGP) driver-assistance system in the city would take only two months before sales could begin.
However, he added that testing could start only after regulators gave Xpeng the green light to promote the software.
'I expect our technology to help Hong Kong improve [logistics] efficiency and driving safety,' He told reporters during the four-day 2025 International Automotive & Supply Chain Expo, which runs through Sunday. 'Xpeng and other mainland Chinese companies have abundant new technologies that can be introduced to Hong Kong.'
Cars fitted with X NGP are viewed as semi-autonomous because drivers are still required to be hands-on and fully alert. The system, similar to
Tesla's FSD , had performed better than its US rival on the mainland because Xpeng invested heavily in fleet-data analysis and training algorithms to reduce failure rates, according to David Zhang, secretary general of the International Intelligent Vehicle Engineering Association.

Huawei's AI semiconductor output limited to 200,000 in 2025, US commerce official says
Huawei Technologies is expected to ship no more than 200,000 of its advanced artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors this year, according to a senior Trump administration official overseeing US export controls, who estimated that 'most or all of' those chips would be supplied to enterprises within China. That figure would pale in comparison to the more than 1 million China-specific H20 graphics processing units (GPUs) produced by Nvidia in the last nine months of 2024, according to a January report from US research firm SemiAnalysis. Washington in April added the H20 to tightened tech export restrictions on China. At a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee hearing on Thursday, Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey Kessler told lawmakers that the US government should not 'take too much comfort from' Huawei's estimated 2025 Ascend chip production capacity being 'at or below 200,000' units. He did not elaborate on the source of that assessment. 'China is investing huge amounts to increase its AI chip production, as well as the capabilities of the chips it produces,' Kessler said. 'So it's critical for us not to have a false sense of security to understand that China is catching up quickly.' At the congressional hearing, Kessler called for increased funding for US export control measures under the Bureau of Industry and Security. This marked the first time a US government official publicly provided an estimate of Huawei's AI chip output, as the US-sanctioned Chinese firm closely guards details of its Ascend semiconductor technology, development and production.

Hong Kong urged to turn Hung Hom waterfront into city's answer to Cannes, Monaco
Hong Kong authorities have been urged to model the proposed Hung Hom waterfront project after Cannes and Monaco to help drive the city's mega-event economy, as some town planning advisers have questioned plans for more commercial facilities amid a high vacancy rate. Members of the Town Planning Board raised their concerns at the statutory body's meeting on Friday as the Development Bureau briefed advisers about its plan to turn 24 hectares (59 acres) in Hung Hom into a landmark waterfront featuring a yacht marina and a skyscraper. Roger Chan Chun-kwong, a board member and division head at the PolyU Hong Kong Community College, said the government could learn from overseas economies that hold mega-events along the harbourfront. 'We can try to explore and take reference from Cannes and Monaco in using their waters in organising some high-quality international mega-events. The harbourfront can serve as a catalyst to promote other developments in Hong Kong,' he said, citing the Cannes Film Festival and Formula One Monaco Grand Prix as examples. 'The government can be bolder and more creative to link up the harbourfront with existing and future activities so that Hong Kong can become a mega-event capital.' Member Kelly Chan Yuen-sau, who is an accountant by profession, added that the government could consider holding international dragon boat races in Hung Hom and organising regular shows as well as programmes in the area. Other members also suggested featuring more open space at the marina to hold exhibitions and events, and developing maintenance facilities for yachts, while ensuring public access to the venue.
