Unless you speak SENĆOŦEN (sen-CHO-th-en), like these children do, it may be hard to follow along.
'If we ask to go to the bathroom, we ask in SENĆOŦEN, if we ask to go get water, we ask in SENĆOŦEN,' said Gloria Hopkins.

She's an 11-year-old Grade 6 student in the SENĆOŦEN immersion language stream of the ȽÁU, WELṈEW̱ (SAY-wul-nukh) Tribal School, in Brentwood Bay, B.C., about 17 kilometres north of Victoria.
Of the 200 students at the Tribal School (preschool to Grade 6) and W̱SÁNEĆ (wh-SAY-nuch) Leadership Secondary School (Grade 7 to 12), about 88 students take their classes fully in SENĆOŦEN — the language spoken by the four W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations — Tsartlip, Tsawout, Tseycum and Pauquachin.
'I think it's just important to learn your own language,' said Hopkins.
'There's not many elders that are here to speak and teach us, so I'm grateful that we get to learn in our school.'
Her class is learning about climate change and the California wildfires, all in SENĆOŦEN.
Hopkins's teacher had to translate all the materials to be able to teach the class about the fires, something many of the staff are familiar with doing.
'We spend a lot of time creating our resources,' said SX̱EŦILEMTENOT (swe-th-heel-uhm-too-nawt), who teaches Grade 1 immersion.
'We can't just use anything, everything has to be in SENĆOŦEN.'
She said they try not to bring English materials into the classroom.
'It's just that time spent in the language and that time spent trying to evoke that SENĆOŦEN out of the students so that they're responding and thinking and feeling, daydreaming or dreaming SENĆOŦEN is the is the goal,' said SX̱EŦILEMTENOT.

The percentage of Indigenous people in Canada who can speak an Indigenous language has steadily been declining, according to the 2021 census. In 2021, 13.1 per cent of Indigenous people reported being able to speak well enough to conduct a conversation, down from 15 per cent in 2016, 17 per cent in 2011 and 21.4 per cent in 2006.
According to the 2021 census there were 180,085 First Nations people living in B.C., of whom 14,595 could speak an Indigenous language well enough to conduct a conversation, down 7.1 per cent from 2016.
More than half (58 per cent) of First Nations people in B.C. who speak an Indigenous language learned it later in life as a second language. This is the highest share of second language learners nationally, according to the 2021 census.
'Ideally at the end of this, it's going to create speakers that are speaking in the home and the community and then revitalizing it in all the places outside of the school,' said SX̱EŦILEMTENOT.

Students return as teachers
She was a student here from preschool to Grade 1, before switching to the public school system. In 2015 she enrolled in the University of Victoria Language Revitalization Program at W̱SÁNEĆ College — which is located on the school grounds.
SX̱EŦILEMTENOT wasn't planning on becoming a teacher but felt a responsibility to the language and to ensuring that students in the immersion program were able to do their schooling in SENĆOŦEN all the way to Grade 12.
'It's the most beautiful thing. It's the most rewarding, energizing job,' said SX̱EŦILEMTENOT.
Many of the staff and teachers were once students here, including the current principal of the school.
SI,OLTENOT (see-elle-too-not) went to preschool here the year it opened in 1988.
At that time, the school was in English but every day there was SENĆOŦEN class. She also would speak at home with her grandfather Norman Williams — the former chief of Pauquachin First Nation and a former member of the W̱SÁNEĆ school board.
W̱SÁNEĆ school board was created in response to the provincial government taking over First Nations education in the late 1960s, according to articles from the Victoria Times Colonist in 1970.
'Amazing dream of a school'
Children from the four W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations attended the Tsartlip Indian Day School, which opened on Oct. 1, 1931, according to the Indian Day School settlement website.
The chiefs from the four W̱SÁNEĆ communities made up the school board, and the board still operates this way today.
W̱SÁNEĆ leaders were against the integration of their children into the provincial public school system, and wanted culturally-relevant education within community at least at the elementary school level since it was important for cultural survival and educational success, according to the Victoria Times Colonist in 1970.
W̱SÁNEĆ school board took over control of the Tsartlip Indian Day School in the 1970s. In September 2024 the last remaining building of the day school was removed.
ȽÁU, WELṈEW̱ means refuge for the people; it's the name of a sacred mountain where W̱SÁNEĆ people escaped the great flood.
'They worked on this amazing dream of a school where they hired all of our own W̱SÁNEĆ men and women to work on the school and build the school,' said SI,OLTENOT.
When SI,OLTENOT was 14, one of her teachers told her that 'it's strong SENĆOŦEN speaking students like you that need to come back and teach the language.'
'I just kind of held that with me and held that in my heart,' said SI,OLTENOT.

SI,OLTENOT came back to the school to work as a teacher apprentice and did the University of Victoria teacher education program though the W̱SÁNEĆ College.
The school still relies on that program for its immersion program, she says.
'We do lean a lot on our educational assistants that have the language to step in if our teachers are away so that they can help lead the class with their language,' said SI,OLTENOT.
Teachers here spend their summers translating materials to fit the B.C. curriculum, said SI,OLTENOT.
All the students at the elementary and high school are First Nations, mostly from the four W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations. But SI,OLTENOT said the school also has students from Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations.
'I believe that me, having been nurtured and attending our school and having that strong self-identity of who I am, allowed me to find a love for education, a love for learning,' said SI,OLTENOT.
'That's our goal is we want to encompass creating a safe and welcoming environment for our kids to feel welcomed and loved and be comfortable to have the opportunity to learn and love learning.'
In June 2026, the school will see its first Grade 12 class graduate. About a dozen students who started in the immersion preschool will get their 'dogwood diploma' — the B.C. certificate for completing provincial graduation requirements.

Jericho Pier reopens more than 3 years after storm decimated structure
Social Sharing The Vancouver Park Board announced Friday that the 83-year-old wooden pier at Jericho Beach has been reopened after extensive repair and restoration work. Jericho Beach Park's pier had been heavily damaged by strong winds and high tides in November 2021 and January 2022, and was closed soon after. In September 2023, park board staff released a report recommending the removal of the pier, saying a rebuilt pier would risk being damaged again, due extreme climate events. It also said that its removal would be an opportunity for reconciliation with local First Nations. However, the elected park board voted instead to conduct a like-for-like repair on the pier, which was first built in 1942. At the time, the like-for-like repair was estimated to cost $1.7 million, but an insurance claim from the damage would mean the city only had to pay $350,000. The greatest financial barrier for a like-for-like repair, according to the staff report, would be the maintenance costs of inspecting the pier each year and, in case of damage, repairing it. Staff estimated that would take between $100,000 and $2.35 million annually. "This vulnerability is forecast to increase in light of climate change effects," said the staff report about expected sea level rise and an increase in the frequency of storm surges. "The useful life of a like-for-like repair may very well be shortened by these continued storm events." The pier at Jericho Beach, on Vancouver's Westside, was a popular place to fish and take in views over the Burrard Inlet and the downtown skyline, as well as a place for marine rescue vessels to dock. Park board commissioners cited its nostalgic value, as a place for families to gather over the years, in approving the repair option, but said they were not ruling out an eventual complete rebuild of the pier. The park board said in a Friday social media post that a new float would be installed at the pier by the end of June. It said temporary fencing would remain around the pier this weekend due to the Vancouver T100 triathlon world tour race happening at the beach.

Rare spirit bear cub living near B.C. highway stirs excitement, concern, as word of its existence spreads
Shelley Lindaas has long dreamed of seeing a Kermode bear cub in person. An amateur wildlife photographer based in Terrace, near B.C.'s north coast, she spends much of her free time hiking the backwoods and camped out with camera equipment in one spot for hours at a time, waiting to catch a glimpse. But her goal of seeing the rare, light-furred variant of a black bear came almost accidentally this year as she was driving along the highway and spotted the cub, with its family, just off the road. "They were sitting right on the highway," Lindaas said. "I get unusually excited when I see any wildlife ... but I was off the charts excited." Kermodes, also known as spirit bears, are a subset of black bears that live in B.C.'s North and Central Coast regions. Their unique colouring occurs due to a recessive gene passed on through black bears. The official animal of British Columbia, a recent survey estimated their population to be fewer than 500, making them one of the rarest bear sightings in the world. For generations, First Nations limited information about the bears out of concern they would be targeted for hunting and trapping, but in more recent years some groups have taken to highlighting their existence as a way of raising wider awareness about the need for ecosystem management on B.C.'s coast. And that debate, about how best to handle it when an animal many dream of seeing is discovered, is playing out in miniature in Terrace where many are celebrating sightings of the cub while others worry posting photos and video of it will put the animal at risk by drawing too many people to the region. Concerns over habituation Lindaas, who grew up in the northwest and whose father was a hunter and trapper, didn't see her first Kermode until 2023, after years of exploration in the region. Since then, she's managed to track a few bears and document them through her Instagram account and a calendar she sells locally. But, she said, she doesn't generally share her photos until after she's confident the bears have moved away from the area she spotted them in. "I always wait until August before I post pictures, and I get bombarded by other wildlife photographers about where I took them," she said. "If I have friends in the area, I'll tell them, but I try to keep it quiet." She made an exception in posting the photo of the cub because there had already been so many other sightings and posts on social media that it seemed "everyone knew." Indeed, a search through local Facebook groups reveals multiple photos and videos of the bear, along with its mother and two black bear siblings. Along with those posts are comments from locals worried about too many people getting too close to the bear, a concern that has been amplified by the conservation officer service, which put out a message urging people to give the bears space and not do anything — such as feeding — that might acclimatize them to human contact. "It's natural for people to be curious if they see a white bear on the side of the road, I understand," said Sgt. Micah Kneller of the Terrace conservation officer service. "We just encourage people that if they see the bear, or bears in general ... they move on fairly quickly." He said some of the most concerning behaviour would be rolling down windows to make noise to try and get the bear's attention, as well as anything that might lure them toward the highway or other people. He said while there'd been no reports of people feeding the bears yet, he worries it will become a greater risk as more tourists less familiar with wildlife behaviour came to the region over the summer. "Inevitably some traveler ends up throwing food toward some of these bears so they can get a better picture of them," he said. Even without the food, he said, frequent vehicle stops would get the bears used to traffic, leading to a greater likelihood to them getting hit or, in a "worst-case scenario," crawling onto vehicles, forcing them to be killed by the conservation officer service. Hundreds of black bears killed annually Provincial statistics show hundreds of black bears are destroyed each year as they are deemed a risk to humans, with more than 8,000 over a 14-year span from 2011 to 2024. Statistics are not kept specifically for Kermodes, but hunting the rare white bears is illegal, with penalties of up to $100,000 and/or one year in prison. Lindaas said it is important for members of the public to understand that although the photos she takes look like she's up close and personal with the bears, she uses specialized equipment that lets her zoom in and enhance images from great distances. "It's a heavy, heavy edit," she said. "It's really frustrating when you're giving them a respectful distance but then people pull up, like, two feet from it with their iPhone and they're leaning out the window, stressing the animal out." She encouraged people to get familiar with animal behaviour and follow the advice of wildlife officials to stay far away when encountering any wild animals.

Hope and healing
'How do you begin to forgive the unforgivable?' This is the enduring question of Cree, Salish and Métis writer and poet Chyana Marie Sage in her memoir Soft As Bones, and a question that plagues many in Prairie cities across Canada. Through the weaponization of residential schools, the child welfare system, the Sixties Scoop and unfulfilled treaties, Canada has inflicted harm on Indigenous Peoples for centuries that snakes through generations. In Soft as Bones, Sage speaks of her deep pain caused by Canada and inflicted on her family. Growing up in Edmonton in public housing, she recounts the horrors of having to turn her father in for sexually abusing her older sister for years. This resulted in the cutting off of family ties, skirting from house to house and school to school, and ultimately bearing the brunt of generations of trauma through alcohol and drug abuse and a constant desire to fill a void with dangerous behaviour. Ana Noelle photo For Chyana Marie Sage, the power of the matriarch was and is critical, as her sense of trust, particularly for men, had been eaten away. Part tome of Indigenous teachings, part scrapbook of poems and certainly a deep dive into the emptiness that many youth feel, Soft as Bones also provides pathways for healing the self and a people. Despite the revulsion for her father, Frank, who did unthinkable things, Sage gains an understanding, through her healing, that violence and sickness can be traced back through the reach of memory. As Sage posits, 'I think of the way the schools and the scoops took all my relatives away, and scattered them, and not just physically but mentally, spiritually, and emotionally too.' She speaks openly and honestly about her life and her path to healing, and eloquently and magically weaves in traditional teachings of the drum, water and the animals to not only shed light on her metamorphosis, but on the transformation of her family and her people. A constant thread in the healing is the power of women, the matriarchy — when Sage felt safest, it was with Indigenous women. When she felt healing, it was with Indigenous women. At the centre of her core was her mother, who endured violence, and her sisters. And there were always elders present to teach, guide and love. This is what good teachers do. They guide with love. For Chyana Marie Sage, the power of the matriarch was and is critical, as her sense of trust, particularly for men, had been eaten away. 'My trust was eviscerated on such a fundamental, intrinsic level during my most formative years, and that has affected most of my relationships ever since. I have struggled to trust anyone who got close to me,' she writes. What is most captivating for this reviewer is the role school played in Sage's life. As she jumped from school to school, she and her sisters were forced to navigate new peers, protect themselves and endure the systemic racism inherent in our colonial systems. At age 15, Sage is expelled from high school for possession of weed. She describes having to appear in front of the school board: 'So I was expelled from the only place that was giving me any sense of routine. Across the table sat Ms. Long, the vice-principal who loathed me, staring at me with a smug smile on her pinched face.' Children understand very quickly when they are not loved, and too often schools send powerful signals that kids are not wanted. Weekly A weekly look at what's happening in Winnipeg's arts and entertainment scene. On the other hand, a former principal, Mr. Skoreyko, had her back. When she returned to the school that expelled her from Grade 12, where Skoreyko was principal, there were no questions asked. He showed her kindness throughout her teens, and this made the difference for her. When children are pulled closer and not pushed out of the community, they begin to trust and thrive. 'Mr. Skoreyko was someone I could actually count on,' Sage writes. All young people need multiple Mr. Skoreykos — particularly those who are most vulnerable. Soft as Bones Despite the odds, Sage sought her undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta before heading to Columbia University to further develop her writing at grad school. As she explains, and bears witness to, 'Writing is catharsis and it is the most powerful tool I have to use on my healing journey.' The writing of Soft as Bones, and the interviews she performs with her family, are stepping stones along this journey. There is no arrival point, just the notion of getting better. As Sage writes: 'There is no such thing as healed — there is only movement along the spectrum of unawareness to awareness.' Soft as Bones is essential reading for all who work in systems on this land, in this territory. It is a call to action and sheds an enormous spotlight on the voids created by historic violence and racism, and the formidable elixir that is land, language, culture and community.
