Parent Coalition to hold second Speak Our Truth Project Rally
ELKHART — Near the third anniversary of Rio Alred's passing, the Elkhart community is gathering together once again to advocate for child safety and human rights.
The second Speak Our Truth Project Rally: Youth Voices for Justice will take place from noon to 4 p.m. March 15 at the Tolson Center, 1320 Benham Ave., Elkhart.
Child & Parent Advocate of the the organizing group, Parent Coalition for Child Safety & Wellness, Rachel Van Alstine said the topic covers a wide variety of social problems integrated into a united social movement.
'In doing this work now we've really come into significant barriers within the system even and unfortunately with local community providers,' Van Alstine said. 'It's very difficult to get folks to come forward and speak because a lot of people that hold information into what exists are also bound because of their positions and many of them their own jobs and livelihoods if they speak. Folks have their own agendas or concern with liability and their own livelihood.'
Still as the movement continues and grows, Alstine said the coalition has grown to focus rather than on individual concepts like the legal system, welfare, or education and the problems for youth in those sectors, to focus more heavily on the systemic barriers to change.
'If we can come together, we're a much larger voice than out there as individuals and the folks that we're finding get that and it's been awesome to what that develop,' she said.
In addition to speakers and community members rallying at the event, there will also be activities and broader support from area businesses and nonprofits.
'When people really understand what you're about they want to be involved and that's been really beautiful to witness in our community,' Van Alstine said.
Community contributors continue to volunteer, but are currently listed as: Church Community Services which is donating 100 boxes of food to the first 100 people/families; Communicating Joy with face painting; Creative Face Painting by Diana with face painting; DJ Certified Grind will provide the music; the Elkhart City Fire Department will be on site with its inflatable fire house; Elkhart City Parks & Recreation will have a craft activity; Hall of Heroes will be providing a superhero volunteer; Henna & Coffee will have henna tattoos; Party Starters will bring a bounce house and inflatables; and Tolson Center is providing the venue and a youth dance team performance.
Several organizations have also agreed to host a community resource table and donate a family fun basket that will be raffled at the end of the rally including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Heart City Health, MAD Voters, Parent Coalition for Child Safety & Wellness, Ray of Hope, Rio's Rainbow, Southside Inc. and YWCA.
Youth speakers and presenters, ranging from 12 to 24 years old, will be announced in the near future, and there will be a Community Advocate Q&A panel of local advocates to engage and answer youth and community questions surrounding the movement and current legislative efforts for child safety and human rights across the state. Spanish translation will also be provided.
'We're building a very powerful and vulnerable community,' Van Alstine said. 'It will take all of us being honest and vulnerable with each other to ignite any kind of change, and we're here for it. With things evolving the way that they have we're finding our people, people willing to come forward and speak our truth and build around that.'

Man running late for flight makes fake bomb threat to delay takeoff, feds say
A Michigan man arriving at the Detroit airport too late to board his California-bound flight called in a fake bomb threat to delay its takeoff, federal officials reported. John Charles Robinson, 23, of Monroe, Michigan, was arrested a day later on Friday, June 6, when he arrived at the airport to board another flight, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said in a news release. Robinson was turned away at the gate for Spirit Airlines Flight 2145, bound for Los Angeles, after arriving late at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Thursday, June 5, prosecutors said. At 6:25 a.m., Robinson used a cell phone to call the airline to make a false threat about a bomb on the airliner, prosecutors said. 'There's gonna be someone that's gonna try to blow up that flight, 2145,' Robinson said, according to prosecutors. He gave a fake description of the supposed bomber. 'They're still threatening to do it, they're still (attempting) to do it, they said it's not going to be able to be detected. Please don't let that flight board,' he said, according to prosecutors. Robinson later confessed he hoped to delay takeoff so he would not miss the flight, the Detroit Free Press reported. Instead, authorities removed passengers from the airliner, canceled the flight and searched the plane with bomb-sniffing dogs, prosecutors said. No explosives were found. The passengers boarded another flight to Los Angeles later that day, according to The Detroit News. Robinson rebooked his flight and was arrested when he returned to the airport on charges including using a cellphone to threaten/maliciously convey false information in an attempt or alleged attempt to damage or destroy an airplane using an explosive, the newspaper reported. 'No American wants to hear the words 'bomb' and 'airplane' in the same sentence,' said U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr., in the release. 'Making this kind of threat undermines our collective sense of security and wastes valuable law enforcement resources In a statement to WWJ-TV, Spirit Airlines said the 'safety of our Guests and Team Members is our top priority.'

The threat, which claimed a bomb would be smuggled through security, caused the flight to be canceled and investigated, though no explosives were found. Queens great-grandma beaten by unhinged woman on NYC subway train can't shake feeling attacker is still ‘behind' her: ‘I heard ‘bop!'
A great-grandmother from Queens who was badly beaten by an unhinged woman in a Midtown subway station last month is frightened to ride the rails after the harrowing unprovoked beating, she told The Post. Aurore Gonzalez, 73 — who was allegedly pummeled by Marie McWilliams, 36, May 1 — said she can't shake the terrifying feeling that her attacker is still right 'behind' her. 'She hit me as I was stepping off the train and I heard 'bop!'' she told The Post Tuesday, the same day McWilliams was arrested for assault. 'Then I started falling backwards and sliding, and I fell into homeless person's belongings covered in feces,' she said. Weeks after the nightmarish ordeal, Gonzalez said she still suffers from sleeplessness and anxiety. 'I still take the subway and I look around now,' said Gonzalez, who has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. '[I'm] looking behind my head all the time. I'm looking for her.' Gonzalez was riding the Manhattan-bound E train to her job cleaning law offices at around 4:30 p.m when she allegedly heard McWilliams jabbering racist comments to herself. 'She was just talking loud to herself about Puerto Ricans and blacks and saying that they're no good and that they shouldn't be here!' said Gonzalez. Gonzalez, who is Hispanic, said she turned around and asked the erratic straphanger, 'Are you talking to me?!' McWilliams 'didn't say anything' but followed her as she stepped off the train at the Fifth Avenue-53rd Street station — and then she pounced, repeatedly punching her, she said. 'When I was stepping off the train she hit me in the back of the head,' she said. 'She grabbed my bun…and she started scratching me with a blade on my face,' said Gonzalez, who still had two black eyes from the assault Tuesday. 'I [was] bleeding and I fell into a homeless person's crap and I had to go to my job,' she said. Gonzalez said she now suffers from kidney trouble due to the fall, along with scarring near her eye and migraine headaches. 'This just isn't right. I'm in pain. I have to be on painkillers,' said Gonzalez. 'I couldn't sleep for two weeks. The anxiety, I couldn't eat. At night on my job I would just cry,' said Gonzalez. Asked about her attacker's arrest, Gonzalez said she's 'relieved.' 'I am so happy to hear this. I will testify! She should not have done that. She should keep her hands to herself!' Gonzalez said. 'Have some respect for older people!' McWilliams was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court Tuesday and granted supervised release by Judge Marva Brown over prosecutors' request for $10,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond.
