Josh Taylor bid to become two-weight world champion hit by loss

STV News24-05-2025

Josh Taylor's quest to become a two-weight world champion hit an instant speed bump with defeat to Ekow Essuman at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow.
The 34-year-old former undisputed junior welterweight champion lost his previous two bouts to Jack Catterall and Teofimo Lopez before making the decision to move up to 147lbs.
Taylor's debut at welterweight came against the wily 36-year-old WBO European champion and although the Prestonpans fighter started brightly, he was slowly subdued and ground down by Essuman who won unanimously, the judges scoring 116-113, 116-112 and 115-112.
Up for grabs was the vacant WBO Global Welterweight Championship and the Glasgow arena rocked with enthusiasm at the first bell.
Botswana-born Essuman, who fights out of Nottingham, was immediately stalked by the Scotsman and a left hand found the target to further cheers from the supportive home crowd.
Taylor kept on the front foot, his jab controlling the distance but he was put under pressure for a spell in the third round as Essuman showed his wares for the first time which had the crowd gasping in some surprise.
Taylor was soon back in the ascendancy and several more lefts got through the guard.
Essuman was sent against the ropes by a swift Taylor attack but he instantly responded with powerful shots which had the Scot reeling against the ropes.
Round five saw grappling between the two fighters for the first time really while Essuman appeared to be growing in confidence and belief, a sturdy right hand catching his opponent while backed against the ropes.
It was Taylor's turn to backpedal as Essuman moved forward slowly with menace and notably the crowd had quietened.
Essuman continued to work diligently on Taylor, who looked to be slowing down, certainly lacking the earlier zip and his left eye looked to have opened up from a clash of heads.
By round eight, Taylor's fans realised he was in a real tough encounter.
Essuman, remaining calm and calculated with his defence on point, was finding gaps in Taylor's defence, especially with his ramrod right hand, which landed again in the ninth round and in the next round the Prestonpans boxer again found himself on the ropes taking some brief punishment.
The crowd tried to rally Taylor but it was Essuman who finished the round with another flurry.
The 11th round brought a couple of combinations from Essuman with Taylor dancing away to safety but the Nottingham fighter certainly seemed to finish the bout stronger to send the Scotsman back to the drawing board.

Jadon Sancho's transfer lifeline as three clubs lead race to end Man Utd misery

EXCLUSIVE: Jadon Sancho's likely destination this summer is Saudi Arabia, with Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad and Al Nassr are all interested - and the player has links to high-profile figures in Saudi which could help broker a deal Jadon Sancho could head to Saudi Arabia this summer after Chelsea snubbed the chance to sign the Manchester United outcast. The England international has been left in limbo again after the Blues refused to meet his contract demands. Chelsea opted to pay United £5million as a penalty fee for failing to trigger the obligation to buy him for £25m as part of the loan deal agreed last summer. ‌ Sancho, 25, had a mixed season at Stamford Bridge but did score in the Blues' Europa Conference League final win over Real Betis last week. ‌ Enzo Maresca was keen to keep the winger but Chelsea's top brass would not meet the player's demands for the Stamford Bridge club to match his £300,000-a-week wages. United were brought into the discussion about whether they would pay off some of the wages left on his deal which expires next summer. But they opted not to intervene and will instead pocket the £5m fine and hope to sell him elsewhere. United still owe Borussia Dortmund close to £17m in unpaid fees from the £75m deal to sign him in 2021. No top European clubs are going to consider signing the player on those wages and Sancho has shown by refusing to take a pay cut at Chelsea he still wants to earn what he gets at Old Trafford. That means his likely destination this summer is Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad and Al Nassr are all interested. Sancho has links to high-profile figures in Saudi which could help broker a deal. That would be music to United's ears. Boss Ruben Amorim has no intention of reintegrating the player into his squad as they push ahead for a deal for Bryan Mbeumo after securing Matheus Cunha. ‌ United are looking to sell to raise further funds for their summer rebuild and are banking on getting some money from Sancho. They would hope a Saudi bid could at least match the £25m they were due from Chelsea. But the £5m penalty fee they have received gives them wiggle room on their budgeting. That could be used to supplement the players' wages at another club if they don't strike a deal with a Saudi big hitter. United don't want to have to loan Sancho out for the final year of his contract and see him walk away for nothing next summer - although the player is not against that idea as he would have the pick of his clubs next summer. Joseph Parker eyes fight with rival on Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois undercard

The New Zealander has not fought since knocking out Martin Bakole, but despite seemingly being next in line for a world title fight, Parker wants to stay busy Joseph Parker has expressed his interest in a trilogy showdown with long-time rival Derek Chisora. The New Zealander has been out of the ring since his stunning knockout win over Martin Bakole in February. While holding the provisional WBO title, he is eagerly awaiting the outcome of Oleksandr Usyk 's rematch with Daniel Dubois - which is scheduled to take place on July 19. ‌ The much-anticipated face-off between Usyk and Dubois is set to be held at Wembley Stadium, with all four major world titles on the line. In a bid to ensure the Kiwi heavyweight remains active, promoter Frank Warren has indicated that Parker's next fight could come as early as September. ‌ Eyeing an opportunity to remain sharp for the winner of Usyk vs Dubois, the 33-year-old reckons a trilogy clash with Chisora would fit the bill. Speaking to the Ring, Parker said: "I'd like to be out ASAP. I know Usyk and Dubois are fighting on July 19, I'd like to either fight not long after that, or it'd be great if I could be on the same card." "That's been floated by Queensberry, so it'd be nice. Who do I fight? I'm not sure. The belts are held up at the moment. Usyk and Dubois have the belts, and whoever wins, who knows what kind of rematch clauses are in the contract. It'd be nice to fight anyone. It'd be nice to fight someone like Derek Chisora. He is looking for his 50th fight, and I'm not sure if he's going to fight for a title." Parker expressed interest in a potential trilogy fight against Chisora, saying: "I know I've beaten him twice, but I've never had a trilogy in my career, so Derek always brings it, and it could be a good sort of fight to keep me busy." The Kiwi had previously defeated Chisora twice in 2021. Since then, Chisora has regained form, recently winning an IBF world title eliminator against Otto Wallin, making him mandatory for a title shot. Parker is open to facing Chisora but also mentioned a possible rematch with Dillian Whyte, who beat him in 2018, as an alternative. Parker added: "There's also Dillian Whyte. Fabio Wardley is fighting Justis Huni this weekend, or very soon. There's many options out there. I know [Martin] Bakole wants a rematch, too. But I think it would be awesome to fight on the undercard of Usyk and Dubois. I'll fight anyone. Like I said, if there's no one else to fight, Derek Chisora is always keen. He's always up for it but he's also got a great following, and he's looking for his 50th fight."
