Panneerselvam upset over exclusion from Amit Shah's Chennai visit
ADMK Workers' Rights Retrieval Committee coordinator O. Panneerselvam on Thursday (May 15, 2025) expressed disappointment over not being invited during the recent visit of BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Chennai. He, however, maintained that his supporters were still part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Mr. Paneeerselvam told journalists in Chennai that it was 'regrettable' that he was not invited. 'You are aware of the political situation emerging in Tamil Nadu. We faced the previous Lok Sabha elections as part of the NDA. As far as we are concerned, we are part of that alliance even today.'
When asked if he accepted the leadership of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Mr. Panneerselvam recalled the merger of his faction with the AIADMK after a 'dharma yudham' and said: 'Did he not accept that I will be the coordinator [of the party]? And did I not accept that he [Mr. Palaniswami] will be the Chief Minister? So, when parties merge, some consensual comments may emerge. How can I talk about them now?'
When a journalist pressed the same point, Mr. Pannerselvam said: 'You tell me: is it better to accept or not, given today's situation?' Responding to a query, he acknowledged that some leaders of the AIADMK were in talks with him and referred to meeting six leaders of that party. 'We want the divided forces of the AIADMK to come together and act.'
When asked about his comments on actor Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Mr. Panneerselvam said: 'When beloved brother Vijay started his political party, I welcomed it. We can comment only after his political actions lead to an objective. As of now, he is proceeding with the right objective.'

‘EPS betrayed farmers; AIADMK a weed that needs to be removed'
1 2 3 Erode: Chief minister M K Stalin charged that AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has betrayed the farming community. Addressing the farmers after inaugurating the three day agriculture expo at Vijayamangalam in Erode district on Wednesday, Stalin said AIADMK was like a weed that needs to be removed. "As farmers, you must be aware that weeds that grow among crops should be removed,'' Stalin said. "Recall the days when you were forced to hold protests to get your demands fulfilled when the AIADMK was in power,'' he said, adding that life was a struggle for farmers during the AIADMK period and there were farmer suicides. "The circumstances have changed now,'' Stalin said. Continuing his criticism of the AIADMK, Stalin said when farmers in New Delhi protested the three agricultural bills that the BJP brought, EPS had supported those laws, which was a betrayal of TN farmers. Calling upon farmers to back DMK in 2026 assembly election, Stalin said the Dravidian model govt's version 2.0 will win again for sure in the poll and would continue to safeguard the interests of farmers. Stalin said his administration renamed the department as Agriculture and Farmers Welfare department and also presented an exclusive budget for agriculture sector. As a result of the emphasis on agriculture, TN has achieved a food grain production of 458 lakh metric tonnes. 'The yield of food grains has risen from 2,235 kg per hectare in 2020-21 to 2,871 kg per hectare in 2024-25," he said. Sharing statistics, Stalin said the cooperative sector has disbursed 62,352 in crop and livestock maintenance loans to 8.1 million farmers, special health camps for livestock have been organized, benefiting 2.6 million farmers and two lakh free agricultural electricity connections have been given across state. Stalin later proceeded to Salem where he received petitions and greeted people. He was felicitated by the public and party workers. He also honoured requests from students for selfies. At Mettur, he presided over a meeting with party functionaries.

CPM demands more seats, secy continues tirade against DMK
Chennai: CPM state secretary P Shanmugam has reiterated the party's intent to seek more seats in the DMK alliance in the 2026 assembly election. "Contesting in more seats is as important as being in the DMK front to defeat the BJP alliance," he told reporters in Chennai on Wednesday. The CPM has signalled its desire to contest in more seats in the upcoming election over the past few days. Shanmugam reiterated that CPM will contest in more seats in the 2026 assembly election and that it will not be content with the six seats as in 2021. Nevertheless, Shanmugam said the CPM would continue to be in the DMK front. He said the focus was to keep the BJP alliance away from power in Tamil Nadu. The only party that has the strength to defeat the AIADMK-BJP front was DMK, he said. Shanmugam launched CPM's public campaign in Chennai "to highlight the failures" of Prime minister Narendra Modi-led BJP govt at the Centre in controlling price rise, reducing unemployment and protecting constitutional mandates and federal principles. Addressing reporters on the sidelines of the campaign, Shanmugam continued his critical approach towards the DMK, Shanmugam said he was not sure whether the DMK has fulfilled 98.5% of the poll promises as claimed by DMK MP A Raja. "DMK has not fulfilled its poll promise of providing monthly electricity bills as mentioned in its manifesto. There are many such and how can they say that they have fulfilled 98.5% of their promises," Shanmugam asked. Raja had said that DMK fulfilled its poll promises except that of providing family pension to the govt employees. Shanmugam wondered whether all the unfulfilled promises come under the remaining 1% of the poll promises as claimed by the DMK. Despite being part of the DMK front, Shanmugam has been critical of the state govt. On Tuesday, Shanmugam called DMK govt 'capitalist' and said the DMK cannot win on its own. Meanwhile, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan also said that it was natural for any party to aim for more seats. "But, ultimately, the DMK would allot an appropriate number of seats," he said.

PM has put country on path of long-term growth, says Ashwani Vaishnaw
The BJP on Wednesday highlighted the 'transformation in the lives of an average Indian citizen' as well as the strides in both the country's economy and its standing in the global order in the last 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre. Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw gave a presentation on the 11 years of 'seva (service)', 'sushashan (good governance)' and 'gareeb kalyan (welfare of the poor)' under PM Modi's leadership. He said 'humongous tasks' had been fulfilled under the Prime Minister's leadership to put the country on the path of 'long-term growth'. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari besides national spokespersons and senior party leaders attended the event organised at Bharat Mandapam in the presence of senior editors and journalists from the print media. The presentation focussed on statistics related to 12 'big picture' achievements in each sector ranging from the welfare of the poor and the marginalised to the welfare of farmers and women's empowerment, ease of living for the middle class, infrastructure development, affordable healthcare and enhancement of India's per capita income from a little over `86,000 to `2 lakh, among others. In addition to this, the Union Minister also sought to underscore the changes in the very 'vision' of governance undertaken by PM Modi since taking over in 2014 with the welfare of both the nation and its citizens at their core. 'Earlier, there was competition among districts when it came to being declared 'backward', but PM Modi's vision is different; these became not backward but aspirational districts… Under his government, the economy of the very country which enslaved us for 150 years has been surpassed… 'Defence agents', once common in Delhi's corridors, are now a thing of the past,' Vaishnaw said. 'Instead of breaking the back of Naxalism, earlier governments used to only acknowledge its presence across what was called the 'Red Corridor'… Article 370 was treated as a given, something that nothing could be done about, but not any more… No other Prime Minister before him made an announcement as crucial to the welfare of our girl children as the provision of sanitary pads at `1, (a promise) made from the Red Fort,' he said. Vaishnaw also underlined India's stature as a global leader when it came to the indigenous Unified Payments Interface (UPI), through which digital transactions of an estimated `214 lakh crore had been done till January during the 2024-25.
