US goalkeeper Zack Steffen injures knee and will miss CONCACAF Gold Cup

CHICAGO (AP) — Zack Steffen injured a knee and became the second goalkeeper dropped from U.S. training camp ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Steffen was hurt during training Tuesday, returned to the Colorado Rapids for more exams and will miss the tournament, the U.S. Soccer Federation said Wednesday. Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte injured an oblique on May 24. Matt Turner, the No. 1 American goalkeeper for the past three years, remains in camp along with Chris Brady and Matt Freese, who both have never played for the national team. Turner, who turns 31 on June 24, played just four matches for Crystal Place this season, one in the League Cup and three in the FA Cup — the last on March 1. Turner's last game was on March 23, the Americans' 2-1 loss to Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place game. 'I don't see myself as the number one No. 1 all the time,' Turner said Wednesday, referring to a goalkeeper's frequent jersey number. 'I think that's my mindset going into every camp right now, is that every inch, every opportunity needs to be fought for and every opportunity that I've had under this current staff I've earned by my performances within training and the opportunities that I had this past season with Crystal Palace.' Turner hinted a club change is possible. Dean Henderson started all 38 Premier League matches this season. 'Hopefully I'll have some news for you in terms of my future this summer,' Turner said. The Americans have friendlies against Turkey on Saturday at East Hartford, Connecticut, and Switzerland three days later at Nashville, Tennessee, then meet Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia and Haiti in the first round of the Gold Cup. ___ AP soccer:

Former Steelers 2013 first-rounder earns high school head coaching position

Former Steelers 2013 first-round pick and UGA legend Jarvis Jones was just named the head coach for Carver-Columbus High School. Jones had a terrific college career after leaving USC for Georgia — accumulating 28 sacks, 45 tackles for loss, and nine forced fumbles from 2011 to 2012 in just 26 games. Advertisement Jones' elite collegiate production resulted in the Steelers acquiring him with the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft — but he didn't find similar success at the next level. Pittsburgh declined Jones' fifth-year option and wouldn't re-sign him at the conclusion of the 2015 season — which would ultimately be the last time he ever played in the NFL. The former Steeler would ultimately return to UGA in 2019 to earn a degree in Human Development and Family Science — and Jones would begin his coaching career with Georgia soon after. Here's to Jones finding success as the new head coach of Carver-Columbus High School. Inside Inter Miami: Resurgent week for Messi, club as they prepare for Club World Cup

So much for the slump. So much for Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano on the hot seat. Mascherano was named MLS Coach of the Week after Inter Miami surged up to third place in the East - just one point from second place - following a pair of much-needed wins against Montreal and Columbus this past week. Lionel Messi is happy again. Luis Suarez is scoring again. Inter Miami is winning again. On the latest episode of Inside Inter Miami, our hosts Michelle Kaufman and Andre Fernandez break down the turnaround and if it's enough to carry them into positive results in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, which begins on June 14 at Hard Rock Stadium when Miami takes on Egyptian side, Al Ahly, to open the tournament. We also break down the team's injuries, which piled up in the Montreal game. Kaufman also talks about her recent profile on Fafa Picault, who overcame racism and other obstacles to reach this point in his career. And we have lots of reaction and perspective from Mascherano, including a light-hearted moment after the recent victories. It's our 80th episode and we thank you for being a part of this journey with us. ▪ Remember, you can watch this show on YouTube and on our site at The podcast is available on Spotify, Apple podcasts, and most other platforms where you listen to your pods.
