Peoria County Sheriff investigates woman's body found in Illinois River
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The Peoria County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a woman who was found in the Illinois River, the sheriff said Tuesday.
Sheriff Chris Watkins said his deputies were called to an area near Mosaic Fertilizer in the 8700 block of Cargill Road at 2:30 p.m. Monday on a report of a body in the river. When they arrived, they found the woman who was retrieved from the river by a firefighter from the Pekin Fire Department, which brought their boat.
The company is about a quarter mile off where that road intersects with Illinois Route 9.
'Peoria County detectives are currently working with the Peoria County coroner to identify the female and cause of death,' the sheriff said.
The woman, he said, appears to be an adult, and it appears she was in the water for at least 24 hours.

Another woman was found in the lagoon near that company last May. According to Peoria County Coroner Jaimie Harwood's Facebook, 37-year-old Seiarra (Waddell) DeLasso died from drowning. There were no signs of struggle, trauma, or physical harm.
How she ended up in the river is still being investigated.

It is a case that's grabbing national attention. Last summer, Sonya Massey, 36, was shot and killed in her home by a Sangamon County deputy. That deputy, Sean Grayson, is now charged with first-degree murder and other crimes. The case has gotten so much attention that it's been moved from Sangamon to Peoria County. So with such a high-profile trial coming to town, Sonya Massey's cousin, Sontae Massey, was at the town hall to answer questions about the trial and what he hopes to see. 'I just want the people of Peoria and Tazewell County to be upset,' Massey said. 'It's an obvious slap in the face and it's an insult to think that they can move this over here and take advantage of the people over here.' One supporter, Chama St. Louis, said Peoria has the family's back. 'Peorians are not going to sit down and sit back and just kind of let something happen,' St. Louis said. 'We don't agree with what happened to Sonya Massey in Springfield. And so this is our way of showing that solidarity and to let the family know that we have their back here in Peoria as well.' 2 teens arrested after stolen car pursuit in San Bernardino County
Two teen carjacking suspects were arrested after leading deputies on a pursuit in San Bernardino County. The male suspects were only identified as a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old due to their minor status. On June 10, Victor Valley sheriff's deputies responded to a carjacking on the 13000 Block of Cholame Road in Victorville at 3:14 a.m. The teen boys had threatened to shoot the victim before stepping into the stolen car and speeding away. Deputies spotted the vehicle on Palmdale Road, heading east toward the 15 Freeway. When they tried to pull the teens over, they refused to yield, leading authorities on a pursuit. The chase continued for around 10 minutes before the suspects ditched the car and fled the area on foot. They were later found near Palmdale and Sequoia Roads and arrested for carjacking, vehicle theft, failure to yield and more. They were booked at High Desert Juvenile Detention and Assessment Center. Peoria man gets 7-year sentence for June 2024 shooting
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A Peoria man was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in prison for a June 2024 incident where two cars were struck by gunfire. Christopher Polnitz Cleary, 20, was sentenced in Peoria County Circuit Court by Chief Judge Katherine Gorman. The sentence was in near the lower end of the four-to-15-year year prison term. Polnitz-Clary was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with the June 7, 2024, incident that occurred near the intersection of East Frye and North Indiana avenues. More than 60 shell casings were found on the scene, according to Peoria police. Two days later, officers were sent to the intersection of Hanssler Place and Broadway Street for another report of shots fired. When they arrived, a home and a car were struck by gunfire. During an investigation of the second shooting, detectives found that a blue Dodge Caliber was the vehicle used in the shootings. Two Peoria men indicted for June shooting leaving more than 60 shell casings behind In April, Cleary pleaded guilty and under state law, he must serve at least 85% of his sentence. During the sentencing hearing Wednesday, Assistant State's Attorney Brian FitzSimons told Gorman that the shooting happened in the middle of the day and while people were around. It's sheer luck, he said, that no one was hurt. Gorman noted that while Polnitz-Clary had taken steps to improve himself while in custody, his actions could not be overlooked.
