Canadian women fall one spot to No. 8 in FIFA rankings while Brazil climbs to fourth
The Canadian women dropped one spot to No. 8 in the FIFA world rankings released Thursday.
Casey Stoney's side won three of four games since the last rankings in March, defeating Haiti twice and splitting a two-game series with Argentina.
The Canadian women finished 2024 at sixth in the rankings, sliding to seventh in March. Canada has ranked as high as fourth, last achieved in March 2018.
The U.S. remains No. 1, followed by Spain and Germany. Brazil was the big mover, jumping four places to No. 4 while dropping England one place to No. 5.
Spain and Germany both won all their games since the last rankings, narrowing the gap with the U.S., which lost 2-1 to Brazil in April on a stoppage-time goal by Amanda Gutierres. Brazil, beaten by the U.S. in the Paris Olympics final, had not defeated the Americans since December 2014.
Sweden remains sixth with Japan, beaten twice by Brazil, slipping two spots to seventh. Canada, North Korea and France, which fell one rung, complete the top 10. The Netherlands slipped out of the top 10, falling one spot to No. 11.
There have been 168 women's internationals played since the March 6 rankings.
Elsewhere, Colombia jumped three spots to No. 18, cracking the top 20 for the first time. Paraguay rose one place to No. 45, while Venezuela climbed three to No. 48 after a 3-1 win at New Zealand, which dropped one place to No. 33.
Despite the losses to Canada, Haiti climbed three places to No. 50 while fellow CONCACAF side Puerto Rico was up two places to No. 79.
The biggest climbers were No. 93 Egypt (up seven places), No. 111 Luxembourg (up six) and No. 128 Bangladesh (up five).
The United Arab Emirates and Cyprus both fell five places to No. 117 and No. 132, respectively.

A sporting icon courted by prime ministers past and present, newly knighted Sir David Beckham is renowned for being extremely media savvy. Never more so than when I interviewed him for Sky News at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, after he took part in the closing ceremony having played a key role in London's winning bid to host the 2012 Games. Then in 2017, David Cameron's former spin doctor Craig Oliver claimed a senior Tory cabinet minister - thought to have been - suggested giving Becks a peerage and appointing him sports minister in a 2013 cabinet reshuffle. That never happened either, obviously, though at least - just like his "father figure" Sir Alex.

After conquering Europe, PSG now have sights set on Club World Cup glory

Brown) Freshly crowned kings of Europe, Paris Saint-Germain arrived this week in the United States for the Club World Cup and are treating FIFA's lucrative new competition not as a nuisance at the end of an exhausting season but as a serious objective. "I think it is an incredible competition," PSG coach Luis Enrique said of the Club World Cup in the immediate aftermath of his team's UEFA Champions League triumph in Munich two weeks ago. PHILADELPHIA -- And the Emmy goes to ... Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner? Turner already won an NL batting title and a World Series championship ring in his 11-year MLB career. How about adding an Emmy Award to that trophy case? 'Trea Turner's an Emmy winner, absolutely,' sports documentary producer Kyle Thrash said. 'He definitely held it up like he owned it.' Turner may not actually have the award in hand to keep for good, but he got to hoist the real deal ahead of Friday's game against Toronto in a short celebration for the Emmy won for a best sports short documentary produced on the 2023 standing ovation credited with turning around his season. 'The Turnaround' won a sports Emmy in May and Thrash and Phillies fan Jon McCann — whose personal struggles with mental health and kinship with Turner were the heart of the film — attended the game to show off their new bling to Turner. 'Cuz, we did it, huh?! 'McCann said as he shook Turner's hand on the field after batting practice. 'Trea Turner, we share an Emmy together.' Turner read the inscription at the bottom of the Emmy and promised the fans he would wave to them in section 301 if he stole a base in Friday's game. 'We get to bring a trophy back to the ballpark tonight and share it with so many people that were involved in the standing ovation. It's pretty incredible,' Thrash said. Philly sports fans — often billed as some of the worst in sports — gave a slumping Turner standing ovations in at-bats throughout the weekend in an August 2023 series to show he had their full support. Turner was in the first season of an 11-year, $300 million deal with the Phillies but was batting just .238 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs. He was even dropped to eighth in the batting order headed into that series against Kansas City. In three games over the weekend against the Royals, Turner went 4 for 12 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs and he would eventually help lead the Phillies to the playoffs. Turner later helped pay for 'Thank You, Philly" digital billboards in the greater Philadelphia area. The documentary was produced by Higher Ground, the media company founded by former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama McCann, also known as 'The Philly Captain," is a Philadelphia based YouTuber and was one of the fans — along with a Philly sports talk radio host — credited with rallying the fans to get behind Turner. 'During the ceremony, one of the award presenters said, 'When you go up against the Olympics, you lose.' So I kind of thought we already lost,' McCann said. 'We didn't. It was a great, great shock.'
