DENVER (KDVR) — You may see military planes in the sky this weekend, as four Colorado Air National Guard planes will fly over several Colorado communities to honor fallen servicemembers for Memorial Day.
The Colorado National Guard said the 140th Wing of the Colorado Air National Guard will fly four planes on Saturday and Monday for Memorial Day, which honors those who lost their lives while serving the country.

These planes can be seen anywhere from Denver to Durango. Here's what they look like in formation:
'A Memorial Day flyover is more than a display of airpower,' said U.S. Air Force Col. Christopher 'KojaCk' Melka, acting deputy commander, 140th Wing. 'It is a solemn tribute to our fallen heroes, a reminder to our community of the sacrifices made for freedom, and a powerful symbol of our unwavering commitment to honor those who gave all.'

Colorado National Guard said the flyovers are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Monday, but these times are estimates and the flyovers could be cancelled due to weather.

More than 45 million U.S. travelers took road trips for Memorial Day 2025—an increase of approximately one million from the previous year, breaking the 2005 record of 44 million people driving to their desired destination for the holiday weekend. Choosing a car-free destination is a way both to save at the pump and help save the planet. Places that prohibit, or at least greatly restrict, motorized vehicles range from the well-known (Venice, Italy, the world's largest pedestrian zone), to the less-charted Geithoorn in the Netherlands and Holbox Island in Mexico. A horn-free, less-hurried vacation can be more relaxing. 'Traveling without a vehicle alleviates the stresses of route-finding under pressure, the headache, and expense of finding parking spots in busy city centers, and allows people to slow down and soak in a destination at walking speed,' says Paul Melhus, CEO and cofounder of ToursByLocals, which leads trips to auto-free zones, including Dubrovnik in Croatia, Governor's Island in New York, and Hydra Island in Greece. Here are 10 places where you can ditch your wheels and start unplugging immediately. Tunø, Denmark Inhabited since the Stone Age and just 1.4 square miles, Denmark's Tunø is easy to explore on foot, bike, scooter, and traxas, the island's tractor taxis. Travelers arrive via a scenic hour-long ferry from Hou (on the Odder Coast of Jutland), perhaps spotting seals and porpoises along the way. Covered in lush green hills that rise above sandy, stony beaches, the island lures hikers and birders. The best views come at the tower of the 14th-century Tunø Church, an unusual combination of chapel and lighthouse surrounded by apple trees and blackberry bushes. Tunø has several restaurants and a microbrewery, as well as a former dairy converted into a soothing and affordable seaside inn. Located an hour west of Split—reachable by bus, taxi, or water taxi—Trogir holds a quaint, cobblestoned Old Town with pristinely preserved medieval buildings. The finest might be the 13th-century Cathedral of St. Lawrence with its 150-foot bell tower, three naves, and a stone portal featuring intricately carved nude images of Adam and Eve. Maybe that's because getting here requires a flight to Great Corn Island, about 50 miles off the coast of Nicaragua, then an eight-mile boat ride onward in the Caribbean. Although tourism is Little Corn's biggest business, even high season is crowd-free. Walk the one-square-mile island under mango, breadfruit, and coconut trees. Or sink into a hammock on palm-shaded beaches. If you're not daunted by heights, climb the vertical metal ladder to the top of the Little Corn Lighthouse, a lightless tower with impressive views of the island and its candy-colored sunsets. Hiking and horseback riding paths head into the jungle and along the shoreline. The idyllic waters surrounding Little Corn can be explored via paddleboard, kayak, or Miskito, a type of primitive wooden sailboat named after the Indigenous people who created them. Porquerolles Island, France A 10-minute water shuttle from the Cote d'Azur zips nature and history fans to Porquerolles, the most-visited of France's Golden Isles. Its pristine stretches of sand, limestone cliffs, and lush greenery can be explored via hiking and biking trails that crisscross the seemingly trapped-in-time island, 80 percent of which forms Port-Cros National Park. Beaches, including secluded Notre Dame, can be reached by ferry, foot, or the many e-bikes for rent. Tour gardens and several historic fortresses, including the 14-century Sainte-Agathe Fort. The Villa Carmignac, a Provençal farmhouse-turned-museum, fills 21,000 square feet with contemporary art. The main village, founded in the 19th century, claims the bulk of the island's 22 restaurants and several shops. There are also dozens of lodgings options, from boutique hotels and villas to houseboats. The blissful surrounds draw thousands of visitors a day in the summer, making spring or early fall the best time to come. Channel Islands, California Wildlife watchers, kayakers, and hikers find crowd-free, car-free nature in California's windswept Channel Islands National Park. Five of these eight small islands off the coast of Santa Barbara can be accessed by private plane or boat or via ferries which operate several times a week in season. The trip through the Pacific takes between one hour to four hours each way; upon arrival you'll need your own water—and a tent if you want to stay over. (Take this epic trail around Canada's Prince Edward Island.) Isolation and a unique mix of warm and cool ocean waters fuel biodiversity on both land and sea. In the depths off Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, and Anacapa islands, snorkelers and divers might see giant black sea bass and California moray eel amid kelp forests and sea caves. Worthwhile hiking trails include a flat walk to Water Canyon Beach on Santa Rosa Island and a grueling 16-miler on foggy, challenging-to-reach San Miguel Island, best attempted with a guide. Birders come to the islands to spot Western gulls, Brandt's cormorants, Scripps's murrelets, and the only nesting population of California brown pelicans along the West Coast. Hoi An, Vietnam Chua Cau, commonly known as the Japanese Covered Bridge, is a wooden structure dating to the 16th century. It's among the historic attractions in the old town of Hội An, Vietnam. Its Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features 1,000 buildings dating from the 15th through 19th centuries, including shophouses and pagodas. Its most photographed spot? A 400-year-old Japanese bridge, built, some believe, to prevent the mythical Japanese monster Namazu from thrashing about and causing earthquakes. The nights here are ambient and lantern-lit; days buzz with cruises on round, Vietnamese basket boats, cooking classes, or visits to one of Hội An's legendary tailors, who can whip up a custom dress or suit in 48 hours. Refuel with a sweet Vietnamese coffee or a banh mi; Hội An is considered a sandwich capital. There are numerous lodging options, including the new Hội An May Village and Hội An Riverland Villa. Pontevedra, Spain Less than an hour's drive southwest from Spain's Santiago de Compostela, Pontevedra (the capital of a Galician province by the same name) went car-free in 1999, helped by a government program that created 1,600 free parking spaces around its perimeter. Now travelers can traverse Pontevedra's Old Town end-to-end in a 25-minute walk, taking in handsome stone buildings, including the Gothic-style Santa Maria Basilica and the barrel-shaped Church of the Pilgrim Virgin, who is said to guide voyagers along the Portuguese route of the Camino de Santiago. (Learn why the pandemic spurred a pilgrimage travel boom.) Pontevedra Museum showcases Celtic coins, religious iconography, and contemporary paintings. The city's tree-lined central plaza, Plaza de la Herrería, is surrounded by restaurants and bars, most pouring the crisp white wines of the nearby Rías Baixas. After lunch, walk over the Lérez River via the Burgo Bridge, a medieval crossing built over a Roman one. Rottnest Island, Australia Water and wildlife are the big draws at Rottnest Island ('Rotto' to locals), a short ferry ride from Perth, amid the coral reefs and shipwrecks off Australia's western coast. Dozens of beaches offer swimming, snorkeling, sea bikes, and other watery diversions. Glass-bottomed boat trips spotlight marine life such as bottlenose dolphins and 400 species of fish. Rottnest (a mere seven miles by three miles) is small enough to walk in a day, but is best seen via hop-on, hop-off buses that loop around the island, or on an e-bike or Segway. Or explore hidden coves and shorebird-rich wetlands on the Wadjemup Bidi, a 27-mile network of walking trails. Seeking solace, and finding hard truths, on California's Highway 395

As we drove north along Highway 395 — passing the salty remains of Owens Lake, the Museum of Western Film History, the geothermal plant outside Mammoth Lakes that supplies 24/7 clean energy to San Bernardino County — I felt certain we'd found the northernmost reaches of Southern California. It was Memorial Day weekend, and my wife and I were headed to a U.S. Forest Service campground in the White Mountains, 225 miles as the crow flies from downtown L.A.'s Union Station. If you drew a line on a map due west from our campsite, you'd cut through the Sierra Nevada and eventually hit San José. But to my mind, we were still in Southern California. For one thing, Southern California Edison supplied electricity here. For another, Los Angeles had sucked this place dry. In the early 1900s, agents secretly working for the city posed as farmers and ranchers, buying up land and water rights in the Owens Valley. Then Los Angeles built an aqueduct, diverting water from the Owens River to feed the city's growth. Owens Lake largely dried up. The city later extended the aqueduct north to Mono Lake. As a lifelong Angeleno, I felt compelled to see some of the results for myself. I had spent time in the Owens Valley, but never the Mono Basin. So we took a dirt road branching off the gorgeous June Lake Loop to stand atop an earthen dam built by L.A. in the 1930s. It impounds Rush Creek, the largest tributary bringing Sierra snowmelt to Mono Lake. As I looked out at Grant Lake Reservoir — beautiful in its own way, if totally unnatural — I realized I had been drinking this water my whole life. My feelings were similarly muddled when we arrived at Mono Lake. On the one hand, this was one of the coolest and weirdest places I'd ever seen. As we padded along a boardwalk toward the sandy southern shore, I was blown by the gleaming blue water, the snow-capped Sierra peaks and the tufa — my gosh, the tufa. Bizarre-looking rock towers made of calcium carbonate, like something from a dream. At the same time, much of the boardwalk ideally would have been underwater. Under a 1994 ruling by state officials, L.A. is supposed to try to limit its withdrawals from Mono Lake's tributaries, with a goal of restoring the lake to an elevation of 6,392 feet — healthier for the millions of migratory and nesting birds that depend on it for sustenance, and better for keeping down dust that degrades local air quality. Three decades later, the lake has never gotten close to its target level. L.A. continues to withdraw too much water, and the Mono Basin continues to suffer. Mayor Karen Bass said last year that the city would take less, but officials ultimately reneged, citing a dry winter. As we walked past a sign on the way to the southern shore marking 6,392 feet, I felt a little pang of guilt. Responsibility is a funny thing. When we got back from our camping trip, I read about a woman suing oil and gas companies over the tragic death of her mom, who died of overheating at age 65 during a historic heat wave that roasted the Pacific Northwest in 2021. The first-of-its-kind lawsuit claims wrongful death, alleging — accurately — that the companies spent years working to hide the climate crisis from the public. I'm neither a psychic nor a psychologist. But I'm guessing, based on more than a decade reporting on energy and climate change, that executives at the fossil fuel companies in question — including Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Phillips 66 and Shell — aren't suddenly feeling guilty for their role in boiling the planet. Same goes for the Trump administration — impossible to guilt. The World Meteorological Organization reported last week that Earth is highly likely to keep shattering temperature records in the next few years, driving deadlier heat waves, more destructive fires and fiercer droughts. That hasn't stopped President Trump and congressional Republicans from pressing forward with a budget bill that would obliterate support for renewable energy. So why was I, a climate journalist, feeling guilty over something I really had nothing to do with? Was it silly for me to bother taking responsibility when the people wrecking the planet were never going to do the same? I think the answers have something to do with the importance of honesty. As we sat at our campsite by a roaring fire — stoked by my wife, who's way better than me with open flames — I cracked open a book of speeches by President Theodore Roosevelt, delivered in 1903 on his first trip to California. He was on my mind because he'd originally established Inyo National Forest, where our spectacular campground was, to protect the lands and watershed where Los Angeles would build its Owens Valley aqueduct. 'You can pardon most anything in a man who will tell the truth,' Roosevelt said. 'If anyone lies, if he has the habit of untruthfulness, you cannot deal with him, because there is nothing to depend on.' 'The businessman or politician who does not tell the truth cheats; and for the cheat we should have no use in any walk of life,' he said. Naturally, I thought of Trump, whose political success is built on outrageous lies, from climate and election denial to insisting that Haitian immigrants eat their neighbors' cats. I also recalled a recent order from Interior Secretary Doug Burgum discouraging 'negative' depictions of U.S. history on signs at national parks and other public lands — a directive with the Orwellian title, 'Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.' Did that mean educational materials at Manzanar National Historic Site — which sits just off Highway 395 and is managed by the National Park Service — would soon be revamped, to avoid explaining how the U.S. government cruelly and needlessly imprisoned more than 10,000 Japanese Americans there during World War II? If a similar order were issued covering the Forest Service, which is overseen by a different federal agency, would the Mono Lake visitor center take down its thoughtful signs explaining the history of the Los Angeles water grab? Would the Forest Service alter a sign at the nearby Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest detailing the possible impacts of global warming, considering that the U.S. is the largest historical emitter of heat-trapping pollution? Only time will tell. But Teddy Roosevelt was right. So long as Trump and his allies keep lying — pretending that oil and gas aren't cooking the planet, that we don't need sound science, that Americans have only ever done good — they'll feel no guilt, no responsibility. Because they'll have nothing to take responsibility for. Accepting the facts means owning up to the hard ones. It's not just politicians who have trouble. Highway 395's Museum of Western Film History is mostly hagiography, a collection of props and artifacts that fails to unpack the settler colonialism behind the western films it glorifies. But I did learn that the original 'Star Wars' was one of many films to shoot footage in the Owens Valley. And the 'Star Wars' universe, as it happens, is all about fighting an empire that seeks to control people's homelands and histories — a message central to Season 2 of 'Andor,' now streaming on Disney+. 'I believe we are in crisis,' says Galactic Senator Mon Mothma, a leader of the brewing Rebellion. 'The distance between what is said and what is known to be true has become an abyss. Of all the things at risk, the loss of an objective reality is perhaps the most dangerous. The death of truth is the ultimate victory of evil.' Here's the truth: There's not enough water in Mono or Owens lake. It's hotter than it used to be. The sky is dark with wildfire smoke more often. The Sierra Nevada peaks frequently aren't as snowy. Again, the senator: 'When truth leaves us, when we let it slip away, when it is ripped from our hands, we become vulnerable to the appetite of whatever monster screams the loudest.' In America, monsters are screaming. Find harbor in honesty, and perhaps the mountains. LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Lake Mead is 8 feet lower than it was a year ago, and officials are making more adjustments to help boaters who are ready to get out in the water this summer. After adding a new courtesy dock for personal watercraft adjacent to Hemenway Harbor just two weeks ago, the National Park Service (NPS) said this week it is adding another pipe mat at Echo Bay, along with adjustments to the courtesy dock there. Hemenway Harbor, the closest launch point to Las Vegas, will have reduced access this summer as NPS extends the boat ramp. Construction began June 2, and the launch ramp will be reduced to one lane. The courtesy docks will be reduced down by one half, according to an NPS web page summarizing the project. 'Personal Watercraft Beach,' or PWC Beach, was announced around Memorial Day as the summer season began. It's just north of the Hemenway Harbor ramp. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area Facilities team installed two Mobi-Mats, one on each side of the new courtesy dock. The mats are portable, and have been used in recent years to help boaters with changing conditions at the lake. Some boaters have complained that they won't use PWC Beach because they don't want to drive through the dirt, but they won't have any other option nearby. 'All jet skis must launch at PWC Beach during construction,' according to a May 31 social post. Summer is the busiest time for boaters, but it's also the best time for construction, NPS said. 'Water level projections for the 2025 summer boating season are favorable for construction, allowing dive and contract teams to perform underwater and shoreline work safely and efficiently at the launch ramp. Summer and fall are generally the best times for this type of underwater construction work,' NPS said. As of noon Wednesday, Lake Mead's surface was at 1,056.59 feet, compared to 1,064.81 feet on June 15, 2024. While that drop is a bit alarming, it's better than projections last year that expected the lake to be down another 3 feet, at 1,053.56 feet. The lake typically hits its low point in July each year. On July 27, 2022, the lake hit its lowest point since it was filled in the 1930s, dipping to 1,041.71 feet above sea level. At Echo Bay, crews were scheduled to do the work on Wednesday, June 4, and finish before the end of the day. The upgrades will extend and widen the ramp for safer, easier boat launching, NPS said.
