Paid his dues, Gators give Robinson first head coaching job
Harold Robinson Jr., right, has paid his dues, serving as an assistant coach for a decade. Now the Washington-Marion product gets his first head coaching job at LaGrange. (Rodrick Anderson / American Press) After a decade as an assistant coach and leading multiple area schools to the playoffs, Harold Robinson Jr. has landed his first gig as a high school head coach. LaGrange High School announced Tuesday on social media that Robinson is the new boys basketball head coach. Robinson replaces Jason Wilson, who went 109-130 in eight seasons, including district championships in 2018-19 and 2022-23 'It feels really good,' Robinson said. 'I feel like I put a lot of time into the sport of basketball and the community as an assistant coach.' He spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Iowa High School and head coach at F.K. White Middle School. He was part of Rob Melancon's staff that guided the Iowa Yellow Jackets to the two best seasons in program history, reaching the Non-select Division II semifinals in 2023 and finals '24. He also spent three seasons at Lake Charles College Prep and four at St. Louis Catholic before joining Melancon's staff at Iowa. In 10 seasons as an assistant, Robinson's teams missed the playoffs once. Robinson looks to revitalize a team that has had one winning season in the last six and missed the playoffs the last two seasons. 'I think it needs just a culture change,' Robinson said. 'I think they have a lot of good athletes over there. They have a lot of kids that need some direction and guidance. 'I've been at F.K. White for the last couple of years. That's the feeder school to LaGrange. I've gotten the chance to get to know a lot of those kids. They're good kids, but I think they need a new direction. Just a new culture. I think that's going to be shaped with education and discipline. If we can carry it from the classroom to the basketball court, I think the culture will change.' Between the players that will return from last season and what he calls a talented incoming freshman class, Robinson said the Gators will be contenders in District 3-4A that includes Washington-Marion, Iowa, DeRidder, Leesville and Eunice. 'I think it's going to take a little time,' Robinson said. 'I think we'll take our knocks and stuff early. 'I think the future will be bright because we have a good freshman class coming in. I think if I can put in some work with those guys and the guys we currently have, we'll be competitive for years to come. That's my vision. I'm definitely happy to start.' Robinson prepped at W-M for four seasons under Mack Guillory, who he worked for at LCCP and St. Louis, and graduated in 2007 when the Charging Indians finished as the Class 4A state runner-up. He earned an accounting degree at Southern University in 2012.

Laracuente-Huebner is first Bearcat to win Big 12 track and field title
Highland graduate Juliette Laracuente-Huebner, who was a multi-time state champion in high school, continues to add to her trophy and medal collection as a member of the women's track and field team at the University of Cincinnati. Laracuente-Huebner won the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in the pentathlon while competing earlier this season in Lubbock, Texas. She scored a 4,182, which was one point from advancing to the NCAA Division I national championships, according to her high school coach Chip Wendt. She took fifth in the 800 in 2:16.47 and eighth in the shot put at 36-10 1/2. She is the first Bearcat to win an individual Big 12 title, and it was the second-best score ever posted in the pentathlon by a UC athlete. Here are results from other Marion-area college athletes as they competed in indoor track and field this winter: Highland grad Juliette Laracuente-Huebner is an athlete on the University of Cincinnati's women's track team, where she competes in the pentathlon among other events. Mount Gilead's Allison Johnson is a junior on the women's track team at Penn State. She ran the 1000 meters in 2:43.05 to take second at the Nittany Lion Challenge, and she was fifth in the 800 in 2:05.36 at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships. Ohio Wesleyan's Hazel Jolliff is another pentathlete. The junior from Cardington finished 10th at the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships with a score of 2,221 where she was third in the shot put at 32-1 1/2, eighth in the high jump at 4-5 1/2, 10th in the 60 hurdles at 10.74, 14th in the long jump at 13-6 and 15th in the 800 at 3:04.84. In the same competition, River Valley's Lainee Valentine , who is a senior at Wittenberg, posted an eighth-place finish in the pentathlon with a 2,590. She was third in the long jump at 16-0 1/2, sixth in the shot put at 28-8 1/2, seventh in the 60 hurdles at 9.82, eighth in the high jump at 4-5 1/2 and 13th in the 800 at 2:56.7. OWU sophomore Alexis Eusey of Highland was seventh in the NCAC's women's shot put at 36-7, which is a personal record. Another Highland grad, Mason Duncan , a junior at Wittenberg, was fifth in the men's distance medley relay at the NCAC meet, helping his team to a 10:32.83. River Valley's Emma Hawk is a junior at Wittenberg, and she produced a PR in the 3000 meters at the NCACs with a 10:34.75 for seventh. She was also eighth in the 5000 at 18:19.29. Aaron Gannon , a freshman from Mount Gilead, competes for Mount Vernon Nazarene, and he was 16th in the 800 in 2:04.43 at the Crossroads League Indoor Track and Field Championships. Northmor's Julia Kanagy ran the 5K in 19:34.62 for 15th at the Crossroads. She is a senior on the MVNU women's team. Another MVNU runner, sophomore Lauren Garber of Highland posted a PR of 3:25.31 for 16th in the 1000 at the Crossroads. Competing for Walsh as a freshman on the men's track team, Mount Gilead's Quade Harris ran second in the 500 at 1:10.9 and fourth in the 200 at 23.68 during an indoor meet at Muskingum. At the Great-Midwest Athletic Conference's indoor meet, he was part of the sixth-place 4x400 relay that ran 3:20.15. He also posted a 51.04 in the prelims at the G-MAC. Kelsey Kennon , a grad student at Findlay, finished third at the Ashland Jud Logan Light Giver with a 43-7 in the shot put. The Mount Gilead grad had a PR of 57-2 1/4 in the weight throw during a home meet and claimed second. At the G-MAC, she was seventh in the shot put at 43-4 1/4 and 10th in the weight throw at 53-6 1/2. River Valley grad Grant Butler , a sophomore at Ohio Northern, was eighth in the long jump with a 21-4 3/4 at the Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. He was also 17th in the high jump at 5-9 3/4. Connor Robins , another RV product who competes at Ohio Northern, was seventh at the OACs in the shot put at 48-0 and ninth in the weight throw at 53-10 1/4. The junior set a PR in the shot put with a 48-9 1/2 for eighth place at Grand Valley State. He also set a PR by finishing third in the weight throw at 53-10 1/4 during a home meet. Highland's Landon Remmert is another ONU competitor. The senior was eighth at the OACs in the 60 hurdles with a 9.44. His indoor PR was set during the OAC prelims when he ran 8.89. College Notebook: Elgin grad Tiffany Hix earns NCAC top scholar-athlete honor
Elgin graduate Tiffany Hix is leaving her mark on the field and in the classroom at Wittenberg University. The junior track and field standout was recently given the North Coast Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for 2024-25, an honor given to one male and one female athlete at every NCAC school. Advertisement "Tiffany is a great example of what a student-athlete represents," Wittenberg track coach Paris Hilliard said in a release. "She has done a great job of balancing all aspects of college. I am extremely proud of her and her accomplishments." Hix is an exercise science major who holds a 3.91 grade point average. Over the winter, she finished second in the women's pole vault at the NCAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, going 10 feet, 10 3/4 inches. During a home meet in December, she went 10-11 3/4. She has missed the spring outdoor season following a knee injury. "I am very honored and humbled to receive this award that recognizes both my work in the classroom and in the Wittenberg track and field program," Hix said in a release. "This award wouldn't be possible without the incredible support I received from all my coaches and all my professors." Here are some other Marion-area college athletes who competed in sports over the winter: Marion Harding grad Jayden Combs , a former Division I state champion bowler for the Presidents, continues to bowl at college powerhouse Indiana Tech. He appeared in 14 games in five events, averaging a 191.29. He posted one top 25 finish in a tournament, averaging a 204.8 at the RotoGrip Keystone Quaker Classic. Combs made all-academic in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference and was a Daktronics scholar-athlete. Highland's Paige Hicks helped Mount Vernon Nazarene's women's bowling team to a sixth place in the Crossroads League Tournament. She was 20th individually with a 147.33 average. Competing for the men's team at MVNU were Christian Phillips of Mount Gilead, Bryce Rinehart of Cardington and Benjamin Brubaker of Marengo. Grace McCrery of Marion Harding was a junior on the women's swim team at Ripon. She made the 400-yard individual medley finals at the Midwest Conference Championships, ending 16th in 5:09.24. At the Wisconsin Private Championships, she was 14th in the 400 IM in 5:22.11, 17th in the 100 backstroke in 1:12.04, 12th in the 200 back in 2:28.98 and 12th with the 400 freestyle relay in 4:11.96. He was Academic All-Big Ten and went 1-2 this season before a knee injury ended his year. He is 13-9 for his career. Younger brother Daxton Chase was a freshman wrestler at Ohio State. He wrestled at 149 pounds and went 2-3 at the Cleveland State Open and 2-2 at the Edinboro Open. He was 5-6 with one major decision in his first season. Former Pleasant wrestler Anwar Alli, who transferred to Wyoming Seminary in high school, completed his freshman year at Virginia. He went 3-6 at 165 pounds. Also at Virginia, River Valley's Hadyn Danals ended his senior year. He was 4-10 at 184 pounds for the Cavaliers and went 19-17 for his career. Samson St. Germain of Marion Harding, a sophomore at Ferrum College, wrestled at 125 pounds, going 5-18 with a pair of pins, a technical fall and one major decision. Ashland University wrestler Caleb Wetzel of Highland ended his sophomore year by finishing sixth at 141 pounds at the Great-Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament, helping the Eagles to a fourth G-MAC team title in the last five years. River Valley's Gabe Thacker was a sophomore wrestler at Otterbein, competing from 125 to 141 pounds. He went 11-12 and 4-1 in the OAC with four pins and two tech falls. He was fourth at 133 pounds at the Adrian Futures and eighth at 133 at Baldwin Wallace's John Summa Invitation. Austin Amens, a graduate student from Northmor, was also on the Otterbein wrestling roster at 157 pounds. Elgin graduate Tiffany Hix was given the NCAC Scholar-Athlete Award during her junior indoor track and field season this winter. Ariyah Douglas , a senior from Marion Harding, played women's basketball at Findlay. The 5-foot-8 guard appeared in six games before a season-ending injury. She had six points with three assists in 16 minutes against Saginaw Valley. Pleasant's Kyla Columber , a 5-5 guard on the women's basketball team at Bluffton, appeared in 17 games, averaging 2.1 points per game. She had seven points in 18 minutes at Anderson. A 5-8 junior guard at Kentucky Christian, Cardington grad Beth Hardwick played in 22 games, averaging 3.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and shooting 39 percent from the field and 36 percent on 3-pointers. She had high games of 12 points against Union Commonwealth and seven rebounds against Campbellsville University-Harrodsburg. Pleasant grad Trey Booker was a freshman guard on the men's basketball roster at Marietta.
