LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The former president of the La Vergne Lake Elementary Parent Teacher Organization has been indicted for stealing the organization's money following an investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller's Office.
A release from the comptroller said investigators determined former PTO President Valency Horton misappropriated PTO funds totaling at least $13,130.99 between April and July 2024.
The comptroller's office said Horton made unauthorized money transfers from the PTO to her personal Cash App account and used the funds to make personal purchases and allegedly pay individuals to whom she owed money.

She also made two unauthorized ATM withdrawals and an over-the-counter cash withdrawal of PTO funds, the office said in a release. One of the ATM withdrawals was made inside an out-of-state casino.
Per the comptroller's report, the Cash App transfers totaled $10,225, while the ATM and over-the-counter withdrawals totaled $2,905.99.
During an interview with investigators, Horton reportedly stated she used the PTO funds for her personal benefit, though she did pay some of it back. Despite paying back some of the organization money, the comptroller's office said she still owes $11,130.99 to the PTO.
The Rutherford County Grand Jury handed down an indictment for Horton charged her with one count of theft of property over $10,000, one count of violation of the Computer Crimes Act, and one count of fraudulent use of a credit or debit card.

'It is important that school support organizations, like PTOs, have more than one person approve transactions to help prevent fraud,' Tennessee Comptroller Jason Mumpower said. 'PTO officials should also regularly review and reconcile their bank statements to ensure that money is being spent properly. A copy of the bank statements should be included in the minutes of PTO meetings.'

Human trafficking suspect arrested after investigation at Nashville motels

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man was arrested Tuesday following an investigation into a human trafficking operation based out of Nashville motels. According to court documents, special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation in December 2023 into a human trafficking operation at Super 8 in the 800 block of Murfreesboro Pike and Somatel Nashville Airport Hotel on Metroplex Drive. 📧 Have breaking news come to you: → During this investigation, officials spoke with two women who claimed they were recruited in Venezuela and smuggled to the United States. Once in Tennessee, the women were reportedly forced into engaging in commercial sex to pay off 'fines' of $20,000-$30,000. Arrest documents detail how the women were sex trafficked under the direction of several people, including Kleiver Daniel Mota-Rivero and Yilibeth Del Carmen Rivero-De Caldera –who were indicted in February for their roles in a Middle Tennessee-based sex trafficking operation. Tuesday, officers arrested a third person — 25-year-old Ramon de Jesus Velasquez-Martinez — for his role in a similar operation involving Mota-Rivero. According to reports, one of the women said between November 2023 and February 2025 Velasquez-Martinez sent commercial sex clients to her motel rooms, took the money earned from these interactions and frequently took her cellphone to monitor who she was in contact with. RELATED: Several Venezuelan nationals indicted for role in Middle Tennessee-based sex trafficking ring The woman told authorities that in 2024, she escaped the trafficking operation and moved to Miami to work at a restaurant. Velasquez-Martinez reportedly showed up at her workplace and threatened her with a gun to go with him while making comments about her children back in Venezuela. Court documents said after this interaction she returned to Nashville with him and was forced back in to participating in commercial sex acts. During the investigation authorities reportedly found 26 advertisements for commercial sex posted in Nashville which featured Velasquez-Martinez's phone number as the main point of contact. Authorities said thousands of text messages were recovered between Velasquez-Martinez and other suspects regarding commercial sex clients, advertisements and firearms. ⏩ Velasquez-Martinez is charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony trafficking for a commercial sex act. According to Davidson County Sheriff's Office records, he is being held on an ICE detainer and a $150,000 bond. ‘Antioch bows to no council member': Some constituents call for Metro Councilmember's resignation following immigration remarks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Members of the public spoke up about a Metro Councilmember's statements regarding immigration. Metro Councilmember David Benton, who represents District 28, was present at a press conference with Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles wherein Ogles confirmed a federal investigation into the Nashville Mayor's Office over allegedly 'aiding and abetting' illegal immigration. At the press conference, Benton also called for a state or federal audit of the Belonging Fund to 'clarify whether any funds are inadvertently supporting' illegal immigration. 📧 Have breaking news come to you: → The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee had established the Belonging Fund in conjunction with Metro Nashville following Immigrations and Customs Enforcement activitiy in the city. According to Metro, it's meant to give money to nonprofit organizations helping with things like housing instability, childcare or other urgent needs — but not legal services. The CFMT has said that no government dollars have been used for the fund, just donations from individuals or private organizations. 'Stop making a mockery of Memorial Day. Defend Nashville. Defend Tennessee. Defend this country, and stop the invasion,' Benton said during the press conference. Additionally, Metro Council's Immigrant Caucus posted a statement about Benton's press conference, criticizing other remarks he made about immigration and 'invasion.' 'Councilmember Benton does not deserve to hold public office,' the statement reads, in part. 'His conduct and comments are unbecoming of an elected official, particularly one representing a district with a significant Latino population.' ⏩ 'Antioch bows to no council member, to no Congressman, to no king,' Trent Benge, an Antioch resident, said at Tuesday night's meeting. 'Councilmember Benton must resign, and if he won't, we've got our work cut out for us.' News 2 received the following statement from Benton: 'I appreciate everyone having a right to their point of view, including myself. It's important that both sides respect each other enough to respond to what they say and not what they heard they said. Here's what some ignored to make their point. I have always said I support Legal immigration 100%. I love all my constituents and answer every call without asking someone's race or immigration status. That's up to law enforcement. Organizations standing against me should use that energy helping their members learn the path to legal status to avoid immigration enforcement. If citizens, entities, or other people even encourage an illegal alien to remain in the U.S. they are violating US code 1324 and can be arrested themselves. That was bipartisan legislation from 1995 supported by Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer. I understand some in my community are afraid. As much as I care, I must support Federal law enforcement. The State is developing an immigration department as well. We as leaders should not be cruel and give these in danger of enforcement actions a false sense of security that we have the authority to shield them from Immigration enforcement. I would also encourage these leaders to give me their list of laws they want me to ignore. I will continue to serve everyone in my District as I have been doing.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
