Sexton defends Irish dominance in Lions squad ahead of Australia tour
Johnny Sexton has defended the record number of Ireland players included in the British and Irish Lions squad for this summer's tour of Australia.
Lions boss Andy Farrell, who has also been head coach of Ireland since 2019, named 15 in his initial 38-man selection before Finlay Bealham's call-up as injury replacement for Zander Fagerson increased the total to 16.
Leinster's 12-strong contingent arrived in camp on Monday afternoon following their United Rugby Championship success, joining Munster captain Tadhg Beirne and Connacht trio Bundee Aki, Mack Hansen and Bealham.
Former Ireland captain Sexton, who is part of Farrell's coaching team for the three-Test series against the Wallabies, pointed to the form of his country's national team when asked about the selection.
'Well, Ireland have done pretty well over the last few years, having won the (Six Nations) championship last year, the Grand Slam the year before, so you're probably looking over the last three years,' he told a press conference.
'With some players, coaches would look at form over eight, nine years. It's not just if you've played well in a couple of games in the Six Nations, you can't force your way in, but sometimes you take a bigger-picture look with players.
'They know the way Andy coaches, they know the system. It didn't surprise me because, historically, let's say when there was a Welsh coach and the Welsh team did well, there were the majority of the Welsh team.
'I think the teams that performed the best in the Six Nations got selected.'
Farrell's squad contains 13 England players and just two from Wales, while Scottish representation reduced to seven following the withdrawal of prop Fagerson.
The Lions are preparing for Friday evening's pre-tour send-off against Argentina in Dublin.
'With Andy, I've never seen such a thorough process with all the combinations and the amount of players that were considered and talked about,' Sexton said.
'Andy did all those players justice in terms of doing enough research and work, asked relevant people and he's picked the squad he thinks gives him the best chance to win the tour.'
Bath duo Will Stuart and Finn Russell also joined the Lions squad on Monday after celebrating victory in Saturday's Gallagher Premiership final, in addition to lock Ollie Chessum, who played for runners-up Leicester.
Scotland full-back Blair Kinghorn is now the only absent player as he is in Top 14 semi-final action with Toulouse on Friday.
Front-row forwards Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour are set to be released back to the England camp.
Having initially taken a job in the commercial sector following his retirement after the 2023 Rugby World Cup, former Leinster fly-half Sexton is relishing his current role after being tempted into coaching by Farrell.
'No matter what role you come into a Lions set-up, it's a huge privilege and an honour to be here,' said the 39-year-old, who toured as a player in 2013 and 2017.
'It's no different being an assistant kicking coach and helping out with the lads, there is still a huge amount of pride to come in here and put – not a jersey – but a badge on your chest. It's been great to be a part of, a great group so far.
'I'm enjoying being back and hopefully I can add value because that's ultimately what you want when you come into a job.'

Emma Raducanu paired with Carlos Alcaraz for new-look US Open mixed doubles
The response was largely negative but the announcement of the first 16 pairs to have entered appears to have justified the move. A STAR-STUDDED 🤩 lineup of teams have officially entered the reimagined US Open Mixed Doubles Championship! More info: — US Open Tennis (@usopen) June 17, 2025 Raducanu will hope it is more successful than her first mixed doubles attempt at a grand slam last summer with Andy Murray at Wimbledon, where she pulled out ahead of their opening match because of concern over her wrist, denying her partner what would have been a final appearance at the All England Club. It became one of the biggest stories of the tournament, with Raducanu receiving heavy criticism and later apologising to Murray. As well as Alcaraz and Raducanu, British number one Jack Draper has entered with Olympic goal medallist Zheng Qinwen while men's world number one Jannik Sinner will play with American Emma Navarro. Carlos Alcaraz laughs in practice at Queen's Club (Ben Whitley/PA) Other pairs include women's world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov, Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios, Novak Djokovic and fellow Serbian Olga Danilovic and off-court partners Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The event will take place on August 19 and 20, with the winners scooping a prize pot of one million US dollars (approximately £750,000). Not all the pairs announced on Tuesday might make the cut, with entries open until July 28. The top eight teams with the best combined singles ranking – which currently would not include Raducanu and Alcaraz – will qualify directly, with eight further teams given wild card spots.

Fin Baxter ready for bigger role with England this summer
That led to a first England call-up for last summer's tour of New Zealand, and he has been a firm fixture in Steve Borthwick's plans ever since. With first choice loosehead Ellis Genge away with the Lions in Australia this summer, Baxter now has the chance to take on an even bigger role for England. And while the modern game might be asking more of props with ball in hand, Baxter believes that is the nuts and bolts that will determine how far he goes in the game. He said: 'I want to keep showing that I'm a key part (of the England team). I've got a real point of difference, my set-piece is hopefully that difference, and the stuff I bring around the park in my carrying and tackling, is going to hopefully overshadow that aggressive stereotype that Argentina brings. Match week action 💥 England Senior Men's head coach Steve Borthwick has named a 36-player training squad to continue preparations for the upcoming match between an England XV and a France XV at @allianz_stad 🏟️@O2 | #WearTheRose — England Rugby (@EnglandRugby) June 16, 2025 'Props nowadays, I think, are too quick to want to be the modern prop. That label has been thrown around so much whereas for me, you have to scrum, you have to maul, you have to be very good at that first, to then be able to do the rest of it. "At the end of the day, you are picked on your scrummaging and the rest of it makes you a brilliant player. That is something I wanted not to miss. 'Coming through at Harlequins, I would think 'what's stopping me? What's not getting me picked?' and it was scrummaging. It's an easy answer. If you've got that ticked, you can bring the rest of your skills.' Baxter's emergence with England coincided with a string of narrow defeats, finding himself on the losing side in his first five caps. None of that was Baxter's responsibility, but he made a match-winning cameo against eventual Six Nations champions France in February at the Allianz Stadium, scoring a try in a dramatic 26-25 victory. He describes that game as 'mega' and has relished the upturn in results since as England finished their campaign with four straight victories on their way to second – their best result in the tournament for five years. He added: 'With England, it was a tough start results-wise. Come the Six Nations, to get the results like that and perform was brilliant. We beat Japan but before that, I'd not won a game for England, so to go from that to finishing off with four games not losing, it was nice to be on both sides of that. 'Being new into a team, you are not quite sure what is off, what's changed, what is different, because it's your first experience. "I did say to myself 'don't let this taint the start of my career', I had good times in those games, it's not just the result, I was enjoying myself, camp was fun, and the boys were playing well. It was nice to get the balance.' The challenge now is to kick on against the Pumas, renowned for their powerful pack, particularly on home soil. But for a player who has seized every opportunity that has come this way, Baxter is desperate to do it again and show that old-school skills still have their place in the modern game. Make sure to cheer on the England Men's XV against a France XV on Saturday 21st June at Allianz Stadium so together, we raise the roof. Tickets from £25, please visit
