Prep talk: Former University standout David Cheatom is in NCAA Division II Final Four
Cal State Dominguez Hills has advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Division II tournament in men's basketball, and one of its standout players is former University High All-City guard David Cheatom.
He scored 22 points as No. 7-seeded Dominguez Hills upset No. 2-seeded West Liberty 86-84 in Evansville, Ind., on Tuesday. Dominguez Hills will play No. 3-seeded Dallas Baptist in Thursday's semifinals.
'I'm over the moon,' University coach Steve Ackerman said. 'I'm so excited for him and the team and their coaches.'
The 6-foot-4 Cheatom was a two-time All-City player for University before joining Dominguez Hills for the 2021-22 season. Last season he was a medical redshirt. This season as a graduate student, he's averaging 10.9 points.
'I've been texting him,' Ackerman said. 'He's very excited. He and the team are living in the moment.'
The leading scorer for Dominguez Hills is former Gardena Serra guard Jeremy Dent-Smith, averaging 18.4 points.

Clemson baseball adds NCAA Division II saves leader in transfer portal for 2026 season
CLEMSON — Clemson baseball added Hayden Simmerson, a premier Division II relief pitcher, out of the transfer portal on June 4. Simmerson, 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, posted a 3.36 ERA with Catawba this season and led NCAA Division II with 16 saves. The right-hander had 73 strikeouts with just 19 walks over 64 innings. He has two years of eligibility remaining. With Clemson losing pitchers Lucas Mahlstedt and Reed Garris because of expiring eligibility, Simmerson could slot in to fill one of their roles. How Simmerson's play translates to Division I and Power 4 competition remains to be seen, but he could adjust nicely like hitter Dominic Listi did for Clemson this season after spending four seasons at Division III and one at Indiana State. Veasey, who played at Alabama for two seasons, had a 9.82 ERA over 3⅔ innings. He has two years of eligibility remaining. Clemson has hosted an NCAA regional for three straight seasons but suffered an early exit in 2025. It was its sixth time in seven tries being eliminated as NCAA regional hosts since 2011 and the 11th time in its last 12 regional appearances that it has failed to reach the super regional. Now, the Tigers are replacing key hitters and pitchers via the portal because of expiring eligibility, the portal and the MLB Draft. They eye their first College World Series appearance for the first time since 2010 next season. University's Brance McCune named OVAC 5A baseball Player of the Year
MORGANTOWN – University High School outfielder Brance McCune was announced as the recipient of the 2025 OVAC 5A Player of the Year award over the weekend after a strong senior campaign for the Hawks. McCune is the second University player to hold the honor in four years, as former third baseman Aaron Forbes did so in 2022. The University graduate and Bethany College signee was a crucial piece of the puzzle for UHS this season in all phases of the game. McCune averaged an outstanding .454 at the plate, tallying 44 hits in 97 at-bats. Ten of those hits came for extra bases (seven 2B and three 3B) with 18 RBI, 26 runs, and 17 walks, only striking out eight times all season. He held a .534 on-base percentage, stealing 14 bases. He was also errorless defensively in the outfield. For Brance, this season was all about having confidence in himself. 'Honestly, I was a little surprised when I first heard the news,' McCune said. 'I had confidence in myself this season and once I got settled in, just tried to go out there and make an impact for my team every chance I could. Having a good season and being recognized for the work you put in is the best part.' McCune earned at least one hit in 26 of the Hawks' 31 games this season with separate hitting streaks of nine and ten games. During his nine-game hitting streak between April 11 and April 28, seven of those games were multi-hit ones. His effort offensively during the second half of the schedule was key for the Hawks, as they saw themselves sitting 6-10 after a 4-0 loss to George Washington in the Mon County Classic. But UHS turned its season around, finishing 11-4 after the loss to GW. McCune earned 27 of his 44 hits, scored 17 runs, stole eight bases, and struck out only twice during the final 15 games. 'I think that weekend (Mon County Classic) we really showed ourselves what we could do,' he said. 'We realized we had to turn something around to make the most of the rest of the season and finish strong.' McCune is a four-year varsity player for UHS and credits his early years as an underclassman for shaping the work ethic he has as a senior. He made the trip to Charleston as the Hawks won the Region I championship in 2023. 'Sophomore year is definitely one of those that I point to as a year that changed my game,' he said. 'Being around that senior class and group of guys, they really pushed me to be a better player and set me up to learn how I could excel going forward while continuing to improve my game.' Brance says one thing he will take away from his time at UHS is the way he learned to be a good teammate and how a positive environment helps him become a better player. 'Being around a bunch of guys and making those bonds, that's something I'll take with me,' he said. 'I feel like that's something I'll be focusing on a lot at the next level.'

University falls to Cabell Midland 6-5, faces uphill battle on Saturday
The University infield meets for a huddle in the circle on Friday at the state tournament. SOUTH CHARLESTON – The University High School softball team will have to rally on Saturday to defend its 2024 state title after falling to Cabell Midland 6-5 in the nightcap on Friday. Cabell Midland jumped ahead early with three runs in the second inning against UHS. The Knights took advantage of a defensive miscue to score their first run, then added two more on back-to-back singles by Nicole Harris and Becca Conrad. The Hawks responded in the fourth. Lexi Elza's sacrifice bunt led to a throwing error that brought home the Hawks' first run, followed by a successful bunt from Adalyn Brown that plated Kylin Oliveto, trimming the Knights' lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Baylee Smith delivered an RBI double to extend Midland's lead to two runs. But the Hawks answered again in the fifth when Masoner's sacrifice fly scored Kelsey Park, who had opened the inning with a triple. UHS threatened to tie the game that inning, stranding the potential tying run at third. In the sixth, they came close again, but Midland centerfielder Ellie McCormill made a crucial diving catch to rob Brown of extra bases for the second out. That play proved even more significant when Madison Shaver followed with a single. But the UHS defense faltered in the sixth, committing two costly errors. One came on an infield single by Ellie McCormill, which was already enough to score a run, but instead allowed an additional run to cross the plate, extending Cabell Midland's lead to 6-3. Still, the Hawks weren't done. In the top of the seventh, Kelsey Park drew a leadoff walk, and Maddie Campbell followed with a towering home run to left field, cutting the deficit to one and setting the stage for a dramatic finish. The Knights' junior pitcher, Audrea Watts, delivered a clutch performance, recording her 13th strikeout with the bases loaded to secure the win. Earlier in the day, Watts had thrown a no-hitter against St. Albans, leading Cabell Midland to a 6-1 victory. With a 2-0 record on the day, the Knights are now one win away from clinching the state championship. Cabell Midland took an early lead against University, scoring three runs in the second inning. The rally began with an error that allowed the first run to score, followed by singles from Nicole Harris and Becca Conrad to bring in the next two. University responded with a two-run homer from Maddie Campbell and a double by Sophia Lehosit, putting the Hawks within striking distance. However, Watts' final strikeout ended the threat and preserved the Knights' lead. University will face Jefferson in an elimination game on Saturday morning, with the winner needing to defeat Cabell Midland twice to claim the title. Meaning, UHS will need three victories on Saturday to claim the Class AAAA state championship.
